Rhode Island Chapter No. 53---"Little Rhody" SME Region 5
9/12/07 Meeting called to order @ 6:10 In Attendance: Robert Morris (RMo), Chairman Ron Messa (RMe), Vice-Chairman Paul Hossfield (PH), Secretary-Treasurer Jeff Caleshu (JC), Webmaster Helen Greathouse: (HG), Bulletin Editor Financial Review: PH: Financial: nothing changed: $4228.06 New Business: RMo: John U: Made presentation to Natalie: Idea about investigating the contacting of existing members. He went to sound out N. He is learning the process that exists with the telemarketing end of his company. John, Natalie, and I felt it should be regional. The idea would be a regional SME coordinator for chapter membership building, even coordination, etc. It would cost 8-9000 per year. If all the chapters in the area got into it, you could spread the cost. John is continuing to work on it. At October meeting, he expects to have a draft proposal. We should all be thinking the interaction between the chapters, how can we structure it, and what results do we want to come out of it. Networking page on each chapter web site? For example is a company wants help with a specific issue such as ISO certification, they could find it either locally or from national. How are you going to maintain this? B will try to contact some of the other members. Web Site: HG: B, you really have to keep the chairman's voice page updated, or not have it, because the one up there is from December, it makes us look dead. RMo: J & I have been spending some time on web side issues. PH: Graphics don’t always come in, at least not when I am at work using MIE. They are OK at home on FireFox.

9/12/07 HG: They work for me. PH: Did you try DreamWeaver? JC: I intend too soon. PH: I had a concern about it, as I emailed you, is it legal for us to use that copy? As an organization, is it a good idea to use a copy that is someone else's? DreamWeaver does have 30-day full-featured trial version. It is also not hugely expensive to buy, about $500. RMo: He has been given it for use with the ASQ, so it is a resource for Jeff to use. JC: The current webmaster for ASQ uses DreamWeaver. PH: That is good, he can show it to you, sometimes that is better than trying to learn it from manuals. JC: I may try to pick up a small tutorial book. I can check with SME & see if they think there are any ethical problems with using this copy. This copy is not the latest version. It seems to be running fine on my PC. I look forward to trying it out. I will have to come up with a plan to transition the files we have over to it. PH: It may just read them. It is after all a Web design package, and they are HTML. JC: Robert & I have had some good sessions over the summer. We are focusing on the universal calendar. RMo: If you know of functions from other organizations, please forward them to Jeff so he can put them on the calendar. For example, I get stuff from Bryant University, etc. So we can start populating that and keep it rotating. I was also working on how to include John's proposal if it flies. John mentioned that getting the right person, getting them to understand the culture, is probably the biggest hurdle. If you get someone who likes it and can stick with it, that will have the best chance of adding value. RMo: Advertising plan: We agreed to focus on a small adverting plan through the Web site. National has no problem with it. HG: There is no reason for them to. We used to advertise in the printed newsletter. RMo: I have had a couple of inquiries, people who wanted to advertise, I just don't have a format yet.

9/12/07 Membership: RMe: Membership. One new Member. In addition, I have been chasing delinquents. RMo: Have you contacted them? RMe: They are off the roster. RMo: But have you contacted them? RMe: Not yet. HG: I send him a modified printout of the list, which is easier to read. I take out all the things that he does not need then it will fit on a B size RMe: Then I can mark it up easily. Awards: HG: Tony as our Honor Awards Chairman has submitted Jeanna Dion's name for the international award of merit next year. She got it. We were her sponsors. This makes about 25 that Tony has submitted. He will submit mine next year. Because I am an officer, I am not eligible this year. The nominating committee has nominated a woman to be VP next year Barb Fosse. Jeanna has been very active in SME, resurrecting chapters that were having trouble, she has done a great deal of work in spite of having a lot of other responsibilities. Tech night potentials: RMo: I am going to try to set up Vibeco for October. November, Jeff is trying to contact the Providence Journal. For January, I have been talking to Mary Johnson of Engineers of Tomorrow. I think we will need a bigger room, especially if we invite more teams. Since it went so well, we probably can get a few more teams. Can we do it at the Crown Plaza of some bigger venue? It can develop into an annual event for the chapter. We can sponsor it somehow. The kids need the kits, which cost $350. For some families, this is not easy. We can sponsor it, it will cost some money, but maybe we can spend a little money to make a little money. JC: For those meetings, I will have to stock up on presentation frames. I still have all the certificates of appreciation. HG: Would NE Tech allow us to use their facility? It depends on what night it is. They had the competition for next level up, the one for high school kids, at their automotive center. It is a large venue.

9/12/07 RMo: It would be nice to get a studio classroom, where people cans see well, like the Chafee Room in URI. HG: It would depend on when we had it, we would have to work with the school. RMo: Then we could have the refreshments in a different room, to make it easier to keep track of what people paid for, that is, food or no food. Do the presentation up front. Then have a networking dinner afterwards. If we do it at a school, how do you incorporate that so that you get some of the college students to come, watch, and become involved? Perhaps we could get new student memberships out of the whole thing. Visual Job Shop: That will probably be a morning meeting here December. John Uzzilino: (Animatics) He has picked February of next year for the motion control presentation. He wants to use that as an initiative to get people interested in SME. HG: At Taco, we have dog-and-pony shows all the time, with our remodeled facility. Maybe we can arrange something for next spring. Adjourn: 7:15
