STAYING YOUNG IS A CHOICE!
One of the most common statements I hear from patients in the office is that their health problems are due to their age. I recently had a patient in his early 50’s who had some arthritis in his lower back and one hip, who simply said ”Well, I am in my 50’s, I guess I am supposed to have some arthritis and I will have to learn to live with it.” Imagine that, only 50 years old and it sounds like they are giving up….life is over! This is certainly something I do not want for anybody.

While it is true that the older we get, the greater the amount of time we have had to accumulate stress and cause wear and tear on our bodies, chronological age has very little to due with why you may or may not be healthy…. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER!!!! (after all, how old is his other hip?) When I was at chiropractic school, I used to run 10km races in Toronto. I was young, fit, played lots of sports and thought I was in great shape. I will always remember lining up with all the runners at the start line, seeing people in there fifties and sixties and thinking to myself, “they must be crazy running this race at their age. By the time I reached the finished line, gasping for air, they had collected their gift bags, had something to eat and were getting ready to leave. That’s when I realized, if you treat your body right, it will treat you right for many years to come. These people chose to be physically active and decided they were going to take care of themselves, and they were certainly reaping the rewards of their choices. This newsletter is not intended to have you all out running marathon’s this summer. It is intended to have you evaluate your quality of life and look at what you can do to improve it. The better you take care of yourself, the longer into life you will be able to enjoy doing the things that you love to do. Health is not about age, it is about lifestyle. If you treat your body well, meaning you eat right, exercise regularly, think positive thoughts in your life and limit unhealthy habits liking smoking or drinking too much, you will be healthy. If you have not been doing these things on a regular basis, you will be sick. It is never too early or too late to improve your health!

STOP FOCUSING ON HOW OLD YOU ARE AND START FOCUSING ON HOW HEALTHY YOU CAN BE!!!

ONLY YOU CAN KEEP YOU HEALTHY!!!

THE ORTHOTIC CORNER:
With spring FINALLY in the air, and after reading the above, a lot of you are going to be getting out and enjoying the fresh air with lots of exercise….I hope! As we come out of our winter hibernation and start moving about more, we can put a lot more strain on our feet. Our feet are the base of support for our entire body while we are upright. If your feet are not functioning properly, they can create increased strain on the bones, muscles and ligaments around the foot, knee, hip, low back, even all the way up to the neck and jaw. Some of the more common problems I see in the office this time of year are things like Plantar Fasciitis (pain in the arch or heel), shin splints, Ilitibial band syndrome (pain on the outer aspect of the knee), and Piriformis syndrome (pain in the buttock and back of the hip). Many of these problems arise because of poor functioning of the foot. Often it is due over pronation (fallen arches), which gives a flat foot appearance, or the appearance of the ankles rolling in. These problems create abnormal stress throughout the structures of the lower limb, often creating pain and discomfort. In our office, we use Footmaxx Metascan technology which is a hi-tech computerized scan that allows us to measure your foot while you are walking to determine if there any mechanical problems with your feet, that may require a custom orthotics arch support, or if you simply need to do some exercise or just get better shoes. These simple choices may help eliminate unnecessary pain or suffering. If you would like to get your feet checked, simply book the appointment with Leslie. There is no charge for patients to have the extra appointment booked to have their feet scanned.

OFFICE NEWS:
We will have a booth (#5) at the upcoming Caledon Home Show in Bolton, on April 17, 18, & 19. Please feel free to stop by and say “Hi”! It’s always nice to see you outside of the office setting. Did you know we are in the process of creating an office website? One of the perks will be that we will be able to e-mail you our monthly newsletters. Please give Leslie your e-mail address next time you are in, and you can keep up-to-date on great health information from the convenience of your home computer.

WE WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY EASTER AND HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT MONTH
