Authors ABENHEIM, Donald, is Academic Associate for Strategic Studies and an Associate Professor of National Security Affairs with the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He holds a Ph.D. in European History and has been a visiting scholar of the Hoover Institution at Stanford. Prof. Abenheim helped to create the Center for Civil-Military Relations (CCMR) in 1993, and was its director for European programs until 2000. He has also initiated the cooperation with the National Defense Academy Vienna in 1996. Recent publications include “The Big Bang for NATO Enlargement: Goetterdaemmerung or Rebirth?” (2003) BARLOW, William, served in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry and worked in the Defence Secretariat of the British MoD and at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Mr. Barlow taught courses on Eastern Orthodoxy at Eton and participated in projects of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst related to the relationship between armed forces and society (The Military Covenant). He is the author of “Intent only on life” and has broadcasted several programs on issues of soldier’s training, the profession of arms, and moral and spiritual basis of soldiering on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and World Service. FLECK, Guenther, Ph.D., clinical and health psychology. Currently head of the Psychology and Educational Science Research Unit at the Institute for Human and Social Sciences, National Defense Academy, Vienna. Former assignments at the Austrian Military Hospital in the field of Aviation Psychology and at the Austrian Armed Forces Psychology Service as head of the Division for Psychological Training and Support. Guest lecture in psychology of science at the Department of Philosophy of Science, University of Vienna. Vice-President of the Austrian Society of Organismic-Systemic Research and Theory. Research areas: political psychology, psychology and science and cognitive science, epistemology and philosophy of science. HUHTINEN, Aki-Mauri, PhD., professor, Major G.S., is docent of practical philosophy in the University of Helsinki and docent of social consequences of media and information technology in the University of Lapland. He works at the Department of Management and Leadership Studies at the Finnish National Defence College. LAGACÉ-ROY, Daniel, Ph.D., researcher in Military Ethics and Leadership at the Canadian Forces Leadership Institute in Kingston (ONT) Canada, Assistant professor at the Royal Military College of Canada where he is teaching Military Professionalism and Ethics. His main research project centers on Ethical reasoning and moral development in the Canadian Forces, Dr. Lagacé-Roy received his doctorate from the Université de Montréal, P. Québec, Canada. MICEWSKI, Edwin R., social philosopher and political scientist, brigadier, and Director of the Institute for Human and Social Sciences of the Austrian National Defense Academy, Vienna. Member of the Science Commission of the Austrian Ministry of Defense since 1994. Visiting professor at the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Research and teaching areas: political philosophy, the ethics of violence and force, military professionalism and leadership, and civil-military relations. Recent publications: Ethics and International Politics (2001); Civilmilitary Aspects of Military Ethics (2003); Moralphilosophische Ueberlegungen zur Legitimitaet asymmetrischer Kriegsfuehrung. PETRAUSKAITE, Audrone, Ph.D., Associate professor in the Department of Humanities at the Military Academy of Lithuania since - 145 - 1994. She received her doctorate in humanities from Saint Petersburg University, Russia, and teaches ethics, aesthetics, and history of art. Her main research areas focus on issues of civic education and military ethics in the Lithuanian armed forces as well as historical experience of and present challenges in Lithuanian military education. ROYL, Wolfgang; Dr. phil., professor (retired) at the University of the German Bundeswehr, Munich. Dean of General Didactics at the Faculty of Education since 1976. Member of the German Association for Educational Sciences. Work includes publications on military education written in cooperation with the “Military and Social Sciences” in Strausberg, Germany; the German-Atlantic Association in Bonn; and the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation in Brussels. SCHUBERT, Samuel R., is a political analyst and researcher of international terrorism and political violence. Author of articles on terrorist methods, motives and organization as well as critical infrastructure protection, cyberterrorism and al-Qaeda activities on the Internet, Mr. Schubert has served as an Adjunct Fellow with the American Foreign Policy Council, and a Visiting Fellow at the Austrian National Defence Academy. Recent publications: Terrorist War Games & Simulations–a training guide for Law Enforcement Professionals (2004), Cyberterrorism-Weapons of Mass Disruption (2003), and Inside the Terrorist Mind (2002). TOISKALLIO, Jarmo, Ph.D., Professor of Military Pedagogy at the Finnish National Defense College. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Turku in 1993 where he studied education, sociology, ethnology, and philosophy. Research area is the interrelations between educational theory, philosophy, and sociology. Currently establishing a networked research center for Action, Competence, Idenity, and Ethics (ACIE). Recent publications include “Pedagogy for the Postmodernity” (2001, in Finnish) and “Being a Soldier in 2020?” in Culture, Values and Future Soldiers (2002). - 146 -
