                                                                                                                                                                                    Keep safe in fireworks season
                                                                                                                                                                                    THE Council, police and fire brigade are working together
                                                                                                                                                                                    to keep the borough safe during the lead-up to Bonfire
                                                                                                                                                                                    Night on 5 November.
                                                                                                                                                                                    Over the next few weeks, police cadets will carry out
                                                                                                                                                                                    test purchases to check no shops in Hackney are
                                                                                                                                                                                    selling fireworks to under 18s. Those who do could face
                                                                                                                                                                                    prosecution, and young people found in possession
                                                                                                                                                                                    of fireworks can be fined £80 or receive a custodial
                                                                                                                                                                                    sentence if their actions cause injury or harm to others.
                                                                                                                                                                                    The Council and police will also be cracking down
                                                                                                                                                                                    on anti-social behaviour, which can spike during the
                                                                                                                                                                                    firework season. Cllr Feryal Demirci, Cabinet Member for
                                                                                                                                                                                    Neighbourhoods, said: “With Halloween, Bonfire Night
                                                                                                                                                                                    and Diwalli coming up, it’s important to remember to
                                                                                                                                                                                    never take risks – follow the firework code and if you’ve

                                                                                                                                            New ward forums in Hackney
                                                                                                                                            WARD forums that began in the summer are developing a
                                                                                                                                            new way for residents and their councillors to work together
                                                                                                                                            to improve Hackney.
                                                                                                                                            The Council replaced the old ‘neighbourhood committees’,
                                                                                                                                            which covered large areas of the borough, with more local
                                                                                                                                            groups at ward level. Councillors then helped residents to
                                                                                                                                            agree the key things that needed to get done in each area.
                                                                                                                                            Ideas to emerge from the first round of forums included:
                                                                                                                                            • Look at ways of helping more people to get solar
                                                                                                                                                   panels, possibly through bulk buying – Haggerston
                                                                                                                                            • Work with local businesses to look at how to create a
                                                                                                                                                   town centre for the area – Hackney Downs
                                                                                                                                            • Produce a map of community assets, like youth groups
                                                                                                                                                   and community centres, and put it on the Council
                                                                                                                                                   website, so other residents can add to it – De Beauvoir
                                                                                                                                            • Give people the chance to post ideas to improve the

                                                                                                                                                 GOLDSMITHS, University of London is offering young
                                                                                                                                                 residents grants worth £13,500 to pay for an undergraduate
                                                                                                                                                 degree at the South London university.
                                                                                                                                                 It announced a host of new bursaries this month, worth a
                                                                                                                                                 total of £1.4 million, to attract academic talent from a wide
                                                                                                                                                 range of backgrounds in the capital.
                                                                                                                                                 Ten students from six boroughs across East and South East
                                                                                                                                                 London, including Hackney, will receive the partial fee-
                                                                                                                                                 waiver to cover 50 per cent of their entire course.
                                                                                                                                                 Other bursaries on offer include 129 scholarships of £6,000
