Argues that microfinance creates jobs more sustainably and creates Europe jobs that would not have existed otherwise. However, the need for microcredit to address market failure nor microentrepreneurs as job creators are not very well understood and little detailed research or data exists to look at these two facets of the microfinance field in the EU. This article discusses how the EU apprehends micro-finance and how far it institutionally understands the underlying causes of the phenomenon. This article addresses who needs microcredit in the UK, what is the UK extent of the unmet demand across the country, what are the precise terms and conditions required by microentrepreneurs, how repayment rates of at least 95% can be expected, and how an institution making microcredits can become self-financing within six years. The article describes barriers to obtaining funds from the private, public, and voluntary sectors and to operating within a legal and regulatory framework that permits microcredit institutions to serve their clients with the products that they need.
A study of the first three years of Street-UK operations: 2000-2004. UK Found that microentrepreneurs in the UK need support beyond the level at which most consider they have needs. Study reveals gender bias implicit in bank lending decisions The UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is calling for all loan officers to use the same processes when negotiating credit approval within banks. Findings show female loan officers have less strong internal communications with credit controllers than their male counterparts. Whilst no evidence of deliberate gender discrimination was found, the results show that a gender bias is implicit in the criteria on which men and women's businesses are judged because women tend to have less business experience, fewer network contacts and smaller businesses. The study says that there is no systematic way in which bank officers scrutinise business proposals and that decisions are often based on 'gut feeling'. This subjectivity allows for the possibility of gender biased decision making says the ESRC. Survey of women business owners. Paper presented at 6th International Meeting of: Réseau EU Interuniversitaire de l'Economie Sociale et Solidaire, Grenoble 2006: Will the banking sector of the future in Europe be a solidarity banking sector, meeting the needs of and including the poor? What does history tell us and how has the market changed since the 1980's? Research conducted as part of the EMN coordinated EU Inti project Spain on Immigrant Entrepreneurship and Microfinance: Spain Case Study Réseau Financement Alternatif was asked by the Belgian Consumer Belgium Protection Ministry to evaluation of the March 2003 law guaranteeing all persons with residency in Belgium for most of the year, the right to a basic bank account. This report contains the evaluation of the laws implementation and whether its objectives were achieved and makes recommendations. The first study combing Western European and new member state EU 25 and EEA microlending data. Covers Sector Characteristics, Scale, Clients, Products and Services, Operational Performance, Funding and the Future of the Sector. The biggest challenges are related to deal flow, efficiency, funding , operational sustainability and the regulatory environment for microlenders. Bank disclosure is seen to be an important tool in combatting UK financial exclusion. The study evaluates information on small business lending, bank branch availability and basic bank account holding in deprived communities in the UK and US. The study found that some strides had been made in the UK. However, big gaps in the data remain. The UK data is inconsisten and difficult to obtain. The report concludes that without a legal requirement to disclose as is the case with the Community Reinvestment Act in the US, This study is based upon interviews with 213 entrepreneurs regarding their funding needs. Study found that 65% funded their first 3 years in operation without external funds. Amongst the reaminder, 15% expressed an interest in microcredit, even if interest rates were 20%. Two groups were identified with differing funding needs. Most current microcredit products on the market, do not meet these particular need patterns. Germany
