YUKOS

Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev were ruled guilty of theft of oil and embezzlement
by means of fraud by Khamovnicheski Court in Moscow. They also face charges of money
laundering in what some call a governmentally organized raiding campaign on the Russian oil
giant YUKOS. The defendants are being met by the numerous journalists, including foreign
media, in the tightly secured court room. There are “Freedom!” slogans heard on the background,
apparently coming from people outside the courthouse in a staged unauthorized meeting in
support of Khodorkovsky and Lebedev. This is a video report from the courtroom in Moscow,
Russia, December 27, 2010. http://www.newsru.com/data/video/7662.html

Judge Viktor Danilkin sentenced Khodorkovsky to 13.5 years in prison on the second case after
convicting him of stealing oil from his own company and laundering the money. The total 14-
year sentence will be counted from the date of Khodorkovsky’s 2003 arrest and include a
previous term in prison. http://www.newsru.com/data/video/7755.html

Azerbaijan

Construction and land raiding

This is a typical case of land raiding by developers in Baku, the capitol city of Azerbaijan.
Demolition of privately owned old apartment buildings with dwellers in them is going on. The
government claims plan to build a winter park, while the dwellers say that there will be two
expensive malls and luxury apartments. The downtown location is expensive and the dwellers
were offered very little money in compensation for their apartments. They refused to move out
and so the demolition proceeded without prior eviction. The city administration cut off gas,
heating, water, and electricity supply. It offered the dwellers $1,500 per square meter in
compensation or new apartments in another district of Baku, but the dwellers think that this price
is only one fifth of the real price. The houses are indeed very old and have to be demolished, but
the land is very expensive. The confrontation continues. One house, built either in 1855 or 1885,
was eventually demolished. Downtown Baku, February 2010.

Kyrgyzstan

Raiding of businesses and property

Entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan suffer massive attacks and hostile takeovers. Raiders use the time of
political turmoil in this Central Asian nation in order to gain control over some financial and
material assets. For instance, a mine that belongs to a mining company from South Africa was
taken over by local villagers. The Company’s manager does not know their demands and does
not understand the situation. The new government imposed a ban on all financial and material
transactions in order to prevent raiding and registration of assets on new illegitimate owners.
