Follow your Heart 3 CHOCOLATE FACE A POEM FOR DEVON with Delicious Devon Draw or paint a picture of your favorite chocolate face or person, place or thing. When the picture is a face or person it is called a portrait. Self portrait : get a mirror and draw your face. 4 BRIGHT STARS by Magnificent Marco On a clear night, look towards the sky and draw what you see or what you imagine. If you are in the country and time allows, lie down on the grass (on a blanket). Some stars forms different shapes, patterns or groups. These groups are called constellations. Long ago people who studied the star gave them names. Use your imagination and name your star group. Special effect: to help make your stars twinkle, use glitter or shiny star stickers 5 ANNIBAL'S BEST FRIEND SHARON with Able Annibal If you have a pet or if you would like to have one, you will need to know everything about it. Read, read, read everything about caring for this pet. Now you can write a pet poem. You can draw or paste animal pictures together and make a pet collage. 6 OUR LADY OF GRACE & THE CHILDREN OF THE RAINBOW with All the Children Write a poem on how you felt the first time you saw a Rainbow. Draw or paint a picture that has a Rainbow in it. How about drawing a picture with a double (two) Rainbows. Do you know how or what causes the Rainbow?? 7 MATH RULES!! It is important to participate in some physical activity everyday. 9 DOING MY CHORES with Kool Kwasi. Everyone in the family has chores to do. Write a poem about your chores. Draw yourself doing them. Here’s a fun chore. During the month of APRIL National Poetry Month, keep one poem in your pocket or mind(memorize it) be ready to share it. 10 JAZZY JAMINE with Jazzy Jasmine Write birthday poems that rhyme and poems that un-rhyme. Get jazzy with your poem. It can be short or long. You can listen to music that makes you feel good and turn your poem into a song. Or play some music in the background as you recite your poem. 11 BEING BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL by Awesome Asim Write a poem about your family and about your heritage. Ask your parents to help you create and draw your family tree. Make a scrap book with pictures of everyone. Use cloth, felt, mixed materials for this to decorate your book. Read: Grandma Buddy’s House by Betty Stallings Murray 12 GROWING PAINS with Talented Terri Keep a daily diary or journal and write how you , feel, sense, think about growing up and everyday changes. It‟s always a good idea to have a notebook just for this. Write poems about you. Read: Spin A Soft Black Song By Nikki Giovanni 13 ONOMATOPEIA ISLAND with Joyful Jelani Write your own onomatopoeia story/poem. It can be long or short. There are lots of onomatopeias „natural sounds‟ that we imitate and give voice to (sound). Make up a word , make up a sound. It‟s Funtastic. Use your imagination, Draw. Doodle. Scribble. Giggle. 14 KWONDWANI’ S STORY with CryBaby Kwondwani What did you say ‘baby talk’ or game did you play when you were a baby. Hmmm… did you ever finger paint with your ‘’food’ when you were a baby ?? Why not write a poem for babies and illustrate with finger paint.. 15 HAVE YOU HAD A HUG TODAY with Courteous Corrinda A hands on activity: First, there is the one to one hug.Practice with mom, dad,, sister, brother, grandpa & grandma/Nana -- Second, there is the good friends „Hug Relay‟ and finally the whole group hug. THE FOUR WAY HUG, A POEM FOR TARIK with Terrific Tarik A must do activity: the grandest of all hugs; See Nana Jackie do all these hugs on video Then practice morning, noon and night!! With family and friends Nurse Nana Jackie says “12 hugs a day”, keeps the blues away” Write a hug poem, Make up your special hug 16 A BULLFROG'S CALL with Klueless Keomi Write a poem about different kinds of frogs or write an IF poem and pretend to be a frog life. Make it silly or funny. Try something new. Draw with oil pastels(cray-pas) 17 A JOURNEY THROUGH FROG PARADISE with Nomadic Naim Draw pictures of what you know, what you have learned about wild creatures, where and how they live. This is called their habitat. If you have never had a journey or experience with a wild creature, big or small, visit a children‟s zoo. Then write a lively Poem. 18 SNAKES IN THE GRASS with Prudent Pamela Some people have a fear of snakes and other living creatures, like spiders, mice, dogs, and so on. Do you have any fears or do you know someone who does. Write a poem about your fear or when the fear happened. Writing and speaking about fears may help you feel better. 19 DID YOU EVER CATCH A RAINDROP with Angelic Amber Write a poem using all five senses. Include the nature of things “the elements: earth, wind, fire, water” to help bring “aliveness” into your poem. 20 SOMETHING BIT ME with Wake-up Wendy Draw all kinds of insects. Write a story/poem about living in the country or imagine camping outdoors and sleeping in a tent. Get some old Nature magazines and make a BUG collage. 21 SUNRISE SYMPHONY with Naturally Nice Nala Wake up early and pay close attention to nature’s sounds Go to the park, Botanical gardens, or a Zoo. Sit quietly. Close your eyes and LISTEN, then write. 22 BRIGHT STARS with All the Children REMEMBER, We are all Poets . We are all Bright Stars. What IF you were a Shooting star, traveling through the universe ?? Write an IF poem and design your journey. Example: If I were Queen/King of the World Read: „Yes I Can’ by Devon Harris 23 THINGS TO DO: INSIDE THE SAGE GARDEN Favorite Poem Project: Have a weekly or monthly Family poetry reading right in your home. Ask parents, grandparents, neighbors to share their favorite poem. Each participant reads their favorite poem and say why they wrote it or why they like it (you can choose other poet’s works) Where to go: Take a trip to the library or local bookstore where there are free scheduled poetry readings: meet the poets and listen to the “voice” of poet (how they express themselves/their poems). Check your local newspaper for other community events CONCERNING LITERACY. “Poetry Slam”: You can start neighborhood or school or poetry club--tell everyone. Next, have a competition/contest where the poets get up in front of an audience. This is an exciting event where poets “show off” their words and their different styles. Everyone is involved, by either performing or judging the Poetry. Time Out: Everyone needs a quiet time. Mom, Dad, sister, brother, others and you. It’s also good to find a quiet place where you can just read. Family members can agree to a scheduled block of time where a designated area is only to be used for reading. READ EVERY DAY: BUY ONE BOOK A MONTH TO STA RT YOUR OWN LIBRARY. You may want to re-read your favorite book 24 Tools of the trade: Get a large box, label it Artist & put your name ON IT. Fill it with writing pads, pen, pencil and ink, crayons, cray-pas, paint, magic marker, and pieces of felt and vibrant cloth material. Reminder: Creativity shows up whenever it wants to—live it, be prepared to store it and release it whenever you want to! Be Original: You may like some or all of the “things to do”. You can pick and choose what you like or just be original. Do it for fun! QUICK-TIP POETRY LESSONS: TRANSFORMING WORDS INTO ART Lesson #1: The Art of Poetry For easy to do tips on ways to think freely or creatively, read aloud and listen to this poem ‘ How To Be A Poet ’ What did you like about the names of the Sage Gardeners/Characters Their images, the background, and music? Poetry paints ideas using words, pictures, and Images to show and paint our ideas. You can also use collage, mobile, computer graphics, rubbings, and cartooning Pictures and illustrations can bring more life to your poetry. That’s what I did—You Can Too! 25 Lesson #2;The Theme-- What was the poem about? What’s the big idea ? This is the point the writer is trying to make about a subject. Lesson #3: The Purpose Did you learn anything from the poem? This is where you find out what can be learned Lesson #4: The Mood –How did the poem make you feel? How do you feel about the theme? Is it silly, serious, funny, sad, exciting? Lesson #5: The Form – Did you like the way the poem was put together? why? This could be structured and rule oriented or free of rules (free style). Lesson #6: Rhythm and Rhyme. Rhythm: a poetic form where poets read and speak their poem with a unique beat or cadence. Rhyming: using words that sound alike. ‘Spoken Word Artist’ often do both and sometimes use background music Lesson #7: Onomatopoeia- Some poems use the imitation of natural sounds in word form, for example— Zap/Hiss/Boom/Moo…..These are often found in comic strips, and comic books, and cartoons Reminder: creativity does not have to be taught---everyone has it.
