Mills Park Middle School FAQ’s
• Will there be an Open House prior to the start of school?
o Open house will be on Thursday, August 23rd.
o Sixth Grade 1:00 – 2:00
o Seventh Grade 2:00 – 3:00
o Eighth Grade 3:00 – 4:00
• When will my child’s schedule be available?
o Student schedules will be provided on the first day of school. Homeroom lists will be
posted for Open House on Thursday, August 23rd .
• When will my child eat lunch?
o Please see the bell schedule posted on our school website.
• When will I be able to meet my child’s teachers?
o We will host a Meet the Teacher night on Thursday, September 6th at 6:30. This will be an
opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and learn about the curriculum specific to his/her grade
level for each core academic subject area.
• Will my child have the opportunity to take Spanish?
o Yes, we will be offering beginning Spanish at all grade levels.
• What can you tell me about your Academically Gifted program?
o Testing for the Academically Gifted program will be administered twice a year, once in the
fall and once in the spring. Students can be recommended for this testing by teacher or by
• Will you be offering before‐ and after‐school care?
o We do not offer before‐ or after‐school care. There may be outside agencies that provide
after‐school care. As we receive information about these agencies, we will post further
information on the school website.
• When can I find out about my child’s bus route?
o Bus routes should be issued from WCPSS transportation services at the beginning of
August. We will have them available at the Open House on August 23rd and will post a link that
provides this information on our school website when it becomes available.
• Does my child need a PE uniform?
o We will not require students to buy a PE uniform but he/she will be asked to dress out for
PE each day. Students need to wear dark‐colored shorts or athletic pants. Shorts must be long
(no Soffe shorts) with no writing on the back of the shorts. Please do not wear spandex. Boy’s
shorts must fit at the waist without sagging.
o A gray t‐shirt or any color Mills Park t‐shirt will be acceptable. Please do not wear tank
tops, sleeveless, or short shirts as part of your PE uniform.
o Students must wear athletic shoes that either lace up or Velcro for PE class.
• Are students required to change into and out of their PE uniform each day?
o Students will be required to wear proper PE clothing for each Physical Education class. It is
expected that students will not return to academic classes, lunch or electives wearing the same
clothes in which they had PE.
• Will my child be required to shower after PE classes?
o Showers are available in the locker room but students will not be required to take shower
after his/her Physical Education class.
• What sports will be offered at Mills Park Middle School? When can my child try‐out for a sports
o Please refer to the link on our school website for our athletic programs. Tryouts will be
held once school starts. Dates will be posted on the school website and announced during the
daily announcements at school.
• Does my child need a physical to participate in school sports?
o Yes. Physicals are good for one calendar year from the date it was last received. The
physical forms can be found through the Wake County School websites. If your child has a current
physical on file with their previous school, please obtain this from the previous school and submit
it to Mills Park Middle.
• Do students need to purchase a lock for their locker?
o Students will have access to both an academic locker and one in the locker room for their
Physical Education class.
o You do not need to purchase a lock for the academic locker in the hallway. Students will be
provided with one lock and its combination on the first day of school.
o For Physical Education, each student will have access to a locker in the locker room. No
lockers will be assigned nor will locks be distributed. Teachers will lock and unlock locker room
doors at the beginning and end of each class. We strongly recommend a lock to be used to
protect personal belongings. Students may bring a lock from home to use. However, all clothing,
personal items, and the lock must be removed by the student at the end of his/her class time. We
will ask students to provide the combination of this lock to his/her PE teacher.
• How can I access the student handbook?
o Students will receive a copy of the student handbook on the first day of school and this is
also available on the Wake County website (www.wcpss.net). In addition, we have developed a
Mills Park Middle School student handbook which can be found in the front of the student agenda
and on our website.
• Where can I find information about the school dress code?
o The student dress code can be found in the Wake County Student Handbook, which is
accessible through the Wake County Public Schools website. Each student will receive a copy of
the Wake County Student Handbook on the first day of school. In addition, each student will
receive a copy of the Mills Park Middle School Student Handbook in their agenda on the first day
of school. The school student handbook will also be posted on our school website.
• How do I access my student’s SPAN account?
o The SPAN access sign up form will be distributed to students on the first day of school.
These forms should be returned to the homeroom teacher during the first week of school. SPAN
forms can also be accessed through the Wake County Public Schools website.
• Will student agendas be available?
o Students will be provided with a student agenda during the first week of school. Should a
student lose and agenda throughout the course of the school year, we have a limited number that
can be purchased as a replacement for $7.
• Which entrance is the bus entrance? Where should I drop off my child for carpool?
o The bus entrance is the first left‐hand turn off of Mills Park Drive. This entrance is for
buses only. Please use the main entrance for the carpool lane, which is the second left‐hand turn
off of Mills Park Drive.
• When can I expect my child to arrive at his/her bus stop?
o Buses will be leaving campus between 3:00 and 3:30 on a daily basis.
• How do I set up a lunch account to pay for my child’s lunch?
o Please see the link below to access Wake County online student lunch accounts.
• How much do student meals cost?
o The cost of a student lunch is $2.25 and breakfast is $1.25. Breakfast will be offered prior to
the start of the school day.
