Celebrating more than 160 years of debate excellence 1841-2009
W
e would like to begin by thanking you for your interest in debate at Samford University and would like to tell you a few things about Samford, and about our debate team.
In 1831, when Alabama's Baptists first began the idea of founding a college, the Manual Labor Institute of Greensboro, AL, the central focus of the curriculum was the art of declamation. Each Friday, all students participated in informal debates on contemporary issues. These required meetings took the name of the Franklin Polemic Society. The directors of the college believed that such exercises led to quicker and more insightful minds. Although the Manual Labor Institute closed in 1836, the Franklin Polemic Society and its traditions were transferred to Howard College (which is now the College of Arts and Sciences at Samford University). The Franklin Society tradition of weekly declamations and debate continued until well into this century when, due to a host of changes in technology, the tradition of on-campus debates gave way to a demand for intercollegiate debates. Starting in the early 1900's, Howard College students participated actively and successfully in intercollegiate debate. In the 1950's Samford joined the National Debate Tournament, and began the tradition that lasts until today. Last year marked Samford’s fiftieth year in N.D.T. debate. Under the leadership of coaches G. Allan Yeomans in the 1950’s and ‘60s, Brad Bishop in the 1970's (where Samford won three DSR-TKA national championships) and Skip Coulter in the 1980's (where Samford made the late elimination rounds of the N.D.T. four times), Samford University has established itself as one of the traditional debate powerhouses and will have a team at the national tournament this year. Today, Samford continues its tradition of debate excellence. Samford has been routinely represented at all national tournaments, and is considered one of the most stable programs in the Southeast. This year Samford will be represented by debaters at tournaments held at Georgia State University, Harvard University, the State University of West Georgia, Capital University, the University of North Texas, Wake Forest University, Vanderbilt University, U. Alabama, U. Kentucky, U. Georgia, Northwestern University, Middle Tennessee State University and Baylor University. In addition to its nationally competitive teams, Samford University also hosts the Samford University Summer Forensics Institute in June and July, the Samford University Public Debate Series, the Birmingham Area Debate League, and the Bishop Guild Debate Tournament that is held every winter.
The Samford Summer Forensics Institute
In 1974 Brad Bishop, who was Samford’s debate coach at the time, inaugurated the Samford Summer Debate Institute. Because Bishop realized that his college debate program could only be as good as the high school debaters that supported it, the primary goal of the institute was to serve the needs of the Southeast's high school debate. In 1980, with the help of Marilee Dukes and Pat Bailey, Samford offered the first Lincoln-Douglas debate institute in the nation. When few would take a chance on the new format, Samford embraced it and has served as a forum for innovation. Now it is one of the most popular forms of debate in the nation. Many of the standards that characterize modern Lincoln-Douglas debate were initiated at the Samford debate institute. In the last thirty five years both Samford debate and the debate institute have flourished. Each year Samford has been able to hire some of the best coaches in the country and taken the best students in the Southeast to prepare them for regional and national competition. At least 12 NFL and TOC national

Goals of the Institute
All Students Deserve Respect We believe that students who choose to participate in forensic activities are unique thinking individuals. While each student comes from an area that makes different demands on their abilities, we assume that all students are thoughtful and intelligent beings who bring along valuable insight. We encourage students to explore their creativity and independence with the guidance of mature professional coaches and experienced debaters. All Students Should Be and Feel Safe Samford University is a religious community. Consequently, all faculty, staff, and students are expected to live within basic behavioral codes that emphasize the dignity of colleagues, faculty, and Samford staff. Additionally, Birmingham is the home to some of the best medical facilities in the world. Samford's campus is enclosed, located in the affluent Homewood area, and closely monitored by Samford Security. We believe that we offer one of the most secure college environments in the country. All Students Deserve to Get the Most for their Money The Samford Summer Forensics Institute is not run for profit and no part of the Samford Debate budget is tied to its success. Our goal is to offer the greatest possible value for the student's dollar, and Samford University is willing to underwrite some of this effort. This allows us to fulfill our commitment to keep lab groups and the student-to-coach ratio low. Finally, Reputation is Everything Samford has worked hard to make students happy. There is no better index of this than our reputation that we have built over the course of the last thirty years. Year after year coaches send their students and parents send their children to us with the knowledge that they will come back better for it. The fact that our staff send their own students to Samford and that we have maintained relationships with some of the nation's strongest programs for more than a quarter century are testament to the consistency and quality of our program.
