THE HOLY GRAIL (Pierce Purcell)
Only two golf clubs in the country have the complete set of Cups & Shields, Senior, Barton, Junior, Jimmy Bruen & Pierce Purcell. Both Muskerry GC and Galway GC completed the set last September and on Saturday 17th of May Sutton will take their first step towards completing the set with qualifying at Turvey Golf Club at 12.40pm With a minimum combined handicap of 27 it is ideal for 12+15 or 13+14 and is the only competition for male golfers in mid-range handicap to aspire to an All Ireland shoot-out. So it's a bit like your Crossmaglens or your Nemo Rangers aspiring to reach Croke Park comprising, in the main, middle-ranking talented amateur club sportsmen (i.e., less likely to a be on receiving end of call-up for County or Seniorlevel play.) Is the thrill any less to win an AllIreland medal at any level? Observers of Sutton competitiveness over the years hold that traditionally Nine-hole clubs (or those having below-average membership numbers) suffer in this handicap range /combination, for some reason. Another theory is that almost invariably (and of course linked to this numbers game), the absence or unavailability of key-players can deliver a bodyblow at crucial stages. For this 2008 campaign - unfolding its full drama on Sat. May 17th - given a full complement (as in availability of a full first-call panel over the course of the short initial campaign) there is a genuine air of quiet expectation abroad. In the intervening period the Captain will row-in behind this optimistic mood - seeking support on the day(s) of competition. The panel will be announced following final trial on Sunday next (11th) The team is managed by Owen Morton with Eamonn O’Hanrahan and team selection consultant Stephen Halpin. In anticipation of a large Sutton turn out on 17 th!

KATHLEEN WALSHE 1919 – 2008.
Kay, as she was known to all her friends in Sutton Golf Club, was Lady Captain in 1960 – nearly half a century ago. This was at a very exciting time for the Club with Joe Carr winning his third British Amateur Championship, and also the West and East of Ireland – what memories and stories she would have had from that year as she used to attend all the finals. She was a very active and competitive golfer. In recent years she regularly played in the Thursday morning ladies’ competitions, until advancing years brought an end to her golf. Even then she would come out to the club to have lunch and enjoy the fun after the competition. Kay was a lady of refinement, with a wonderful smile and a very good sense of humour - accompanied by a smoky chuckle! She will be greatly missed, and lovingly remembered, by all her friends in the Club, especially by May Quinn, Peggy Wallace and Joan Fitzgerald to name but a few. Our deepest sympathy is extended to her family.
BARTON CUP 2nd ROUND
Not forgetting the other Inter Club matchplay competitions the 2nd round of the Barton Cup takes place on Thursday next 15th of May at 4.30pm. All available support is canvassed especially for the away venue of Corrstown where we will be competing in 3 matches.

Observations of a Paying Guest at UK Golf Clubs

In general guests in the UK seem to be looked at with a great deal of suspicion and get very little service for their $100 green fee, which at most places is cash only.
Don’t ask to play the back tees (except in Ireland where they let you) they will say NO! Reducing almost every course to a driver and wedge. There are too many signs at golf clubs in the UK almost all of which are negative! But try getting into a clubhouse to put your shoes on! Every club has code pad access so to get in you must first visit the Pro Shop, who usually although not always can provide it, (when they are open). The other option banging on the door until someone lets you in is often quicker and no one ever asks you anyway! After getting soaked while playing or after taking a shower don’t ask for a towel you won’t get one unless you bring it yourself!! On the plus side the courses are a great deal of FUN. They have the best schedule of low cost open golf tournaments in the world. The beer is great and the people you play with are a blast. I’ll be back next year.
