                   Development
• In the earliest stages of development, a human baby is called an
  embryo

• After the first eight weeks of pregnancy, a human embryo is then
  called a foetus

• At this stage the foetus has all the main human features

• The foetus continues to develop and grow inside its mothers’
uterus for a total of 40 weeks
Development
                           Birth
 After the gestation period (9 months or 40 weeks) the
foetus is ready to be born

 At this point the uterus begins to contract - these are gentle
at first, but become more powerful as labour moves on

 The muscles of the cervix begin to relax, and the cervix gets
wider allowing the baby through - at some stage the amnion
breaks and the amniotic fluid is released

 Usually the head comes out first, and the baby begins to
breathe almost immediately - the umbilical cord is tied and
cut (this is our navel or belly button)

 Finally, after about half an hour after the birth the placenta
breaks away from the uterus and passes out of the vagina
  (afterbirth)
                        Birth
 After 40 weeks the foetus is ready to be born (called a
  baby once born)…
                          Care
 After birth what does the baby need?

 It is vital the baby receives a great deal of care, as it is
completely reliant on the mother to survive

 For the first few months the baby needs to be fed on
milk from the breasts (mammary glands) - this contains
nutrients allowing the baby to grow

 Just as importantly this milk contains antibodies which
help protect the baby from diseases (artificial milk does
  not contain this)

  picture
                               Birth Of A Baby

The baby is in the uterus inside the The uterus muscle contractions cause the
amnion. The baby is held in place by the cervix to widen and stretch so that the
cervix uterus and vagina become one long
passage, and the baby is moved down

The muscles of the uterus start to contract The baby’s head clears the birth canal
(vagina) and rotates to make sure
shoulders, arms and legs pass through

The uterus muscles contract to push the The baby is born. The umbilical cord is cut.
baby out. The amnion tears and the About half an hour later the placenta
amniotic fluid passes out. At this point breaks away from the uterus and passes
women usually say ”their waters have out of the vagina. This is called afterbirth
                  broken”
