AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2007 – No.1 Dear Parents / Guardians Welcome back to the new term at St. Richard’s Catholic Primary school. I hope everybody has had a wonderful, relaxing Summer holiday, despite the disappointing weather. Welcome I would like to welcome the following children and their families to our school: In Reception – Holly Bullen, Leah Christie, Rebecca Cookson, William Finch, Amy Flood, Ella Gillett, Jearnen Gubatan, Samuel Haughey, Jasmine Horstead, Gilbert Jones, Heather Joyner, Matisse Kundra, Matthew Maitum, Katherine mak, Francesca Martin, Rosemary McCarey, Patrick McGreal, Florence Obino-Mastronardi, Lucy Owen, Kofi Quinnell, Jessica Rayner, Imogen Rice, Annaclara Rodrigues, Ruben Rodriguez-Wilson, Samantha Sahraee, Joao Silva, Samuel Spooner, Rebecca Steer, Edward Tyler, Lilah Wood. I would particularly like to welcome new families who have joined in other year groups: Year 3 Daniel Junco-Richi and Leila Hamdaoui Year 5 Laura Kane and Enric Junco-Richi Year 6 Claudia Jankowiak Improvements to our School During the Summer holidays, we have made several improvements to our school which you may already have noticed. New windows and doors have been installed in the hall, Rainbow Room, Reception and Year 1 downstairs and both Year 6 classrooms and the back of year 5 upstairs. These really enhance the external appearance of the school and will hopefully save on some energy costs. A new canopy has been installed outside year 1, which will enable the children to enjoy learning outside in all weathers. The library has been redecorated and had new lights and will shortly have some new furniture. As you can imagine, all these improvements are very costly for the school. As a Catholic school, the Governors have to pay 10% of all building costs and rely on revenue from Gift Aid and the 400 Club. Please consider joining the 400 Club and / or making a regular contribution via Gift Aid. Forms are available from the school office. Curriculum Newsletter Today, each classteacher will send home a copy of the curriculum newsletter for their class for this term, as well as a letter outlining details about homework, Physical education and any future trips, including approximate costings. All trips, visits, workshops, etc. are planned specifically to enhance, enrich and support the children’s learning across the curriculum. We aim to keep costs as low as possible. Please note, that we are unable to subsidise these visits further as there is no spare money available in our school budget for this purpose. If insufficient families pay, then the visit will have to be cancelled. If you are unable to pay, for whatever reason, please speak to me in confidence.

Dates For your information, a leaflet containing all the important dates for the year 2007 / 2008 should be given to you with this newsletter. This includes INSET dates for the academic year and holiday dates, when the school will be closed for the children. Can I please remind you to ensure that all the children should arrive promptly for school: children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) need to be in school by 8.45am and those in Key Stage 1 (Reception Years 1 and 2) by 8.55am. If you are late please come in to the school via the office. Walking Bus We have received agreement by Chichester District Council to trial our ‘Walking Bus’ for the Autumn term. The ‘Bus’ will take place after school only, Monday to Friday, in the first instance. There will be places for a maximum of 20 children on the ‘Bus’. It will be lead by one of our staff, but we will need volunteers to walk with the children. The ‘Bus’ will leave school at approximately 3.15pm and will walk along Market Avenue to the Cattle Market Car Park. The children will be met by their parents in the small triangle area of the car park which is on the corner of Market Avenue and Stirling Road. If you are interested in your child walking with the ‘Bus’, you will be issued with a special permit, which will enable you to park for free in the Cattle Market Car Park from 3.10 to 3.40pm while you wait for your child. If you are interested in participating in the scheme, please complete the form below. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. (Please note, you do not have to participate every day – please tick the days you would be interested in). Permission Forms Attached to this newsletter are the ‘Walking Visits’ and new ‘Photograph / Filmed Images’ forms. Please complete these forms and return them to the school office as soon as possible. And Finally …… May I take this opportunity to thank you for the many gifts and kind wishes I received at the end of the Summer Term. I look forward to another exciting year at St. Richard’s.

With best wishes

Catherine Hunn Headteacher
