Projects and networks Increase post-graduate education Organize international scientific events Senior researcher visits and resident foreign post-docs ! ! ! ! ! Consolidate research areas Foster synergies within CENTRIA Promote links with UNL and national centres Explore potential service and societal needs Attain critical manpower ! Attract more MSc and PhD candidates Recommendations, Jan 04 panel - 1 CENTRIA should also be at the forefront in other fields. The connections to biochemistry seem promising and should be strongly encouraged. ! ! ! ! ! Hired Assistant Prof. Ludwig Krippahl, with a doctorate in Biochemistry. Awarded postdoc scholarship to Olivier Perriquet, doctor in Bioinformatics. Participates in the bio-informatics applications work package, in EU project REWERSE. Opened one 5-year intl. senior researcher position in bioinformatics (candidates being selected). Applied to a strategic intl. tenured position in bio-informatics jointly with Chemistry department (under evaluation by Dean). Recommendations, Jan 04 panel - 2 […] there are several foreign researchers from different areas working at CENTRIA. This strategy should be continued. Moreover, efforts should be strengthened to hire faculty who have earned their Ph.D.’s or studied at other institutions. ! Opened two 5-year intl. senior researcher positions, one in Formal Epistemology (filled), the other in Semantic Web (call is out). ! Opened two 5-year intl. senior researcher positions in Satellite Imaging, to cooperate with the Oceanographic Institute (filled). ! Other nine postdocs given renewable yearly scholarships: ! Veska Noncheva (BUL), Agnès Braud (FRA), Yiling Yang (CN), Reinhard Kahle (D), Marco Castellani (IT), Ning Chen (CN), Gregory Wheeler(USA), Armando Fernandes (PT), Olivier Perriquet (FRA). Recommendations, Jan 04 panel - 3 CENTRIA should preserve their outstanding expertise in LP and keep being a worldwide observed reference institute. This includes ongoing work in enlarging the applications and tools for LP in combination with other methods. There should be more real interaction with other LP and Prolog groups (like in Porto). " " " " " " Significant effort co-developing XSB-Prolog with SUNY at Stony Brook. Continued cooperation with the company Declarativa in Porto. Participation in standardisation bodies like RuleML and W3C. Improvements to GNU-Prolog within international consortium. Two new projects with U.Porto on LP-related subjects (STAMPA, JEDI). Work on the usage of LP for KRR continued at international level. Recommendations, Jan 04 panel - 4 CENTRIA has to develop a strategy for research besides LP. ! CENTRIA (coordinator) submitted with GECAD/ISEP, in July 06 and still under evaluation, an Associate Lab proposal, COGNOMA, with a broad scope for the future, in the global area of “Cognition in Humans and Machines” " cognition in man " cognition in the machine " cognitive interfaces See next slide for details. ! Four national joint projects with GECAD meanwhile approved. COGNOMA = “COGNition in hOminem and MAchine” COGNOMA – a future associate lab COGNOMA has the main mission to cooperate in a continuous, capable and efficient manner, in pursuing specific objectives of the national scientific and technological policy, in: ! T.U. Dresden and U. Nova de Lisboa (CENTRIA) T.U. Hanoi and U. Indonesia at Jakarta ! The main focus was to develop human resources at the asian partner universities, and to establish and strengthen the connections among the four partners. The interest in computational logic in Asia was raised significantly. This was achieved by joint teaching efforts, by the co-supervision of MSc- and PhD- students and by the running of summer schools in Asia and Europe.
