A Smarter Approach to Servicing Your Vehicle / Bringing Your Vehicle in for Service
• About Our Maintenance Schedule: 2009 & Newer Vehicles • Mercedes-Benz uses a Flex Schedule for maintenance, prompted by indicators on the instrument cluster of your vehicle: • Your first inspection is recommended between 1,500 and 2,500 miles or 30 days. At that time, we will perform our First Visit Inspection, a basic vehicle diagnostic test provided at no charge. If this service is performed prior to or after this mileage, the fee is $135.00. At 6,500 miles, Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz will rotate your tires as a complimentary service. Vehicles with staggered-sized wheels and tires are eligible for a tread wear and tire pressure inspection. Your next service (called the minor-service) will be due between 10,000 - 13,000 miles, or 1 year, and you will be prompted by indicators on your instrument cluster. Also, a non-scheduled lubrication service (every 5,000 to 6,000 miles) is recommended to help increase the life of your engine. Following the minor service, we recommend a tire rotation or inspection and/or oil change when you have driven about 6,500 more miles. Please refer to the “All About Your Tires” section for more details. In another year or 10,000 to 13,000 miles, you are prompted on your instrument cluster, to complete what is called a major service. You then repeat the cycle, starting with another tire rotation or inspection, a minor service, a tire rotation, a major service and so on.

• Additional Services •
These additional services may be required at different times and mileages beyond what is specified by the manufacturer, depending on driving conditions and climate. Brake Fluid Flush The brake fluid flush recommended every 2 years. The brake fluid is hydro-scopic, which means it attracts and absorbs moisture, which will affect the quality of the fluid over a period of time. This service will ensure that your braking system will continue to work at its optimum capability. Spark Plug Replacement The spark plugs will need to be replaced during a specific time or mileage, whichever occurs first. The time and mileage will vary from model to model and can be found in the owner’s manual. It is important to replace the spark plugs at the proper time in order to keep your engine running at its peek performance. This will make your engine perform with better fuel economy and a smoother operation. Transmission service (applies to 2006 & 2007 vehicles) The transmission fluid and filter need to be serviced at 39,000 miles for non-AMG vehicles and 90,000 miles for AMG vehicles. This will assist in removing some of the material that might accumulate during the break-in period. This period is the hardest on the fluid and it is important this fluid be replaced to keep the transmission operating at its peak performance. Coolant Flush Every 2 years for G-class vehicles. Every 3 years for 2003 vehicles and older. Every 15 years for 2004 vehicles and newer. The engine air filter will need to be replaced at a specific time. Over time the coolant will break down and it will form a crystal like substance that will lower the cooling capacity and the efficiency of the engine. This process will not allow the engine to run at a normal operating temperature which can put an additional strain on the engine and other related components. The coolant also protects your engine from freezing in cold weather conditions. Engine air filter The engine air filter will need to be replaced at a specific time or mileage interval. The time and mileage will vary from model to model and this information can be found in the owner’s manual. The filter is exposed to heat and particles that will eventually clog or wear out the filter material. Keeping the air filter replaced will keep your engine performing at its peak and also assist with your fuel economy. Failure to relace this filter in the proper time frame can cause damage to the mass air flow meter. Cabin or Climate Control Filter The dust filter will need to be replaced at a specific time or mileage interval. The time and mileage will vary from model to model and this information can be found in the owner’s manual. The dust filter is for the vehicles climate control system, which removes harmful contaminates from entering into the vehicle. Over a period of time this filter will get clogged with particles, which will not let your climate control system operate to its full capacity. Failure to replace the dust filter as recommended will cause your climate control system to work harder and could cause premature wear.

• Additional Services - cont’d •
Replace fuel filter The fuel filter will need to be replaced at a specific time or mileage interval. The time and mileage will vary from model to model and this information can be found in the owner’s manual. The filter is designed to collect particles that are commonly found in fuel. Over a period of time the filter will clog which will result in poor engine performance, fuel economy and can damage fuel injectors. Transfer case fluid change (applies to E-class 4-matic & GL vehicles) The transfer case is no different than the oil in your vehicle’s engine. The transfer case is working continuously whenever your vehicle is being driven. After a period of time, the oil’s viscosity breaks down and it loses some of its ability to lubricate the transfer case at the oil’s maximum capability. Failure to perform this service at the recommended time could cause premature wear. Clean slide rails and slide shoes (applies to vehicle equipped with sunroof) The slide rails and slide shoes are an important part of the sunroof operation. These items are exposed to the outside elements, which collects particles that will cause the sunroof to bind in operation which can cause an additional strain on the sunroof mechanism and cause premature wear. Clean and lubricate guide mechanism for panoramic roof The guide mechanism is an important part of the panoramic operation. These items are exposed to the outside elements, which collect particles that will cause the sunroof to bind in operation which can cause an additional strain on the sunroof mechanism and cause premature wear.
Check condition of drive shaft flex disc (applies to C, CLK, S, CL, and SL models)
Minor Service / 2005 & Newer Vehicles
It is necessary to check the front and rear drive shaft flex discs for wear and deterioration. If a flex disc were to come apart while traveling you could lose power to the rear wheels. Adjust parking brake cable (applies to SL model only) It is necessary to conduct a one-time adjustment of the parking brake cable on SL models when the vehicle is one year old. The SL is the only vehicle that does not have a self-adjusting cable and some stretching of the cable can occur. Check and tighten bolts attaching steering every 2 years (GL models) It is necessary to check the torque on the attaching bolts for the steering gear box due to the flex in the chassis. Inspect grease packing and correct for joint housing of all wheel drive front axle (G-Wagon model): It is necessary to grease the steering joints in the front axle as each time the steering wheel is turned right or left the grease is expelled from the joint for lubrication. Perform oil change on front and rear axles every 2 years (G-Wagon model) The axles are no different than the oil in your vehicle’s engine. The axles are working continuously whenever your vehicle is being driven. After a period of time the oil’s viscosity breaks down and it loses some of its ability to lubricate the axles at the oil’s maximum capability. Failure to perform this service at the recommended time could cause premature wear. Activated Charcoal filter The activated charcoal filter helps filter out odors and assist in removing some of the particles that can enter the passenger compartment from the outside. See owner’s manual for recommended replacement.

• Intake Service • The intake and exhaust valves of your engine con$140.28 trol the flow of air and fuel into the combustion plus tax chamber. If you start experiencing problems like hard-starting, hesitation, unresponsive performance or run-on, that may be an indication there’s a problem with the fuel/air mixture in your car’s engine. This is caused when deposits build up in the intake valves, combustion chamber, and pistons. To help prevent these types of problems, we recommend an Intake Service every 20,000 miles. The service is designed to remove those deposits and should result in improved performance as well as extended engine life.

• Wheel and Tire Protection •
A security enhancement you may wish to consider is Wheel and Tire Protection insurance. This policy replaces the original tires and repairs or replaces wheels. Prices vary by length in coverage. Ask our Finance and Insurance Manager for more information.
• All about your Tires •
Your Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz has been engineered to be one of the most advanced and sophisticated performance vehicles in the world. But even a Mercedes-Benz is only as good as the part of the vehicle that actually touches the road your tires. Your car’s tires have been designed and built to provide thousands of miles of service. For maximum benefit, however, they need to be properly maintained. Here are a few things you need to know about how to get the most out of our tires. Proper Inflation Optimum tire performance comes when you’ve got the right amount of air pressure. What is the right amount? It’s specified by the vehicle manufacturer, and may be different on the front and rear tires, depending upon the vehicle you drive. Failure to maintain proper inflation pressures can result in rapid wear and improper handling and can also affect fuel economy. Check inflation pressure (including spare) at least once a month and before a long trip. Tires must be checked when they are cold-before. You can quickly find your tire pressure specifications inside the fuel door. Balance An unbalanced wheel and tire assembly may create vibrations when you drive on a smooth road and may result in irregular tread wear. This is an indication that your wheels may need balancing. Rotation You can achieve more uniform wear on all four of your tires by rotating them regularly. Always refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for tire rotation recommendations. Unless otherwise specified, tires should be rotated about every 6,500 miles or sooner if signs of irregular or uneven tire wear appear. Note: Four tire rotation is not recommended on vehicles with staggered tires and wheels due to the difference in sizes between the front and back. Tire Repair Ordinary punctures can be repaired using a patch. This requires removing the wheels, dismounting the tire and repairing the tire from the inside. Following the repair, your tire and wheel must be rebalanced. Tire Replacement When the time comes to replace your tires, it’s important to use only tires designed and recommended for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz. Other tire retailers may offer a good deal on tires they have in stock, but the right tires, built precisely to Mercedes-Benz specifications, are designed to give you optimal performance and safety. At Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz, you can be sure you’re getting the right tires for your car at a competitive price. You will drive with confidence in knowing all work is done by factorytrained Technicians and your Mercedes-Benz approved tires come with a Road-Hazard Warranty. Ask your service advisor for details.
