Pop Art Lesson Plan Subject: Art Grade Level: 9-12 Objective: The students will be introduced to Pop Art by creating their own portraits in the style of Pop Art and researching the movement; in addition, students will learn how to use a digital camera and manipulate pictures on a computer. Materials: examples of Pop Art, laptop computers, digital cameras Procedure: Introduction: All of you have seen Campbell's Tomato Soup cans, read comic strips or have seen pictures of Elvis right? How many of you know that these simple things were once the inspiration for an entire art movement? Transition: Today we are going to research Pop Art. Pop Art was a movement in art that was heavily influenced by pop culture images, such as advertising, entertainment, and comic books. Procedure for Class Activities: To begin the project students will receive a document through Webct outlining the criteria for their assignment. Included in the Webct document will be a description of the project in addition to research questions about Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement. Finally I will include a list of possible web sites students could use to research this movement. In a separate Webct document I will include the rubric for the student’s project so they are aware of what criteria I will use to grade their project. Once they have retrieved the document students will begin the project by first researching the movement and answering the questions. When doing research students should look for the following information: characteristics of the movement, influences, time period and artists involved. When the research is completed, students will use a digital camera to take black and white pictures of one another and load them onto their laptop computers. Next the picture will be opened onto a simple art program like paint and the students will use their stylus to manipulate and alter their portrait in the style of Andy Warhol. At this time I will ask the students to tell me what they have learned about Warhol’s style in their research and brainstorm about possible ways they could alter their own photographs. Students will need to alter the same picture two times. Each picture must be different; students will be encouraged to experiment with different background designs and colors, as well as use different colors for the face and hair. Finally students will mount the pictures onto construction paper to create a finished piece. Each picture must be contained within the boarders of the construction paper. Once I have received all the students’ project I will go back into Webct and use the rubrics sent to each student and grade their project. I will include feedback on what when well and how their project could be improved Transition: At this time I will review the concepts and requirements I have just covered. The students will be asked questions about the material I just covered. This will give me the opportunity to check for comprehension and clarify any vague points. Questions 1. I will use Microsoft word and a digital camera for the content of my lesson. I will use word to type up a handout and then use the digital camera and load a picture of myself into my computer so I can do a sample piece for students to view 2. Students will receive my word document through Webct. In the document I will include the lesson objective, research tools, a brief description of the assignment, and the rubric by which it will be graded. 3. I will give a brief introduction of the Pop Art movement to my students the rest will be left up to them. They will be responsible for researching the movement in order to create a original piece of artwork in the style of Pop Art. 4. Once the project is completed students will be required to print off the finished product and mount it on a piece of construction paper in create a more finished look. 5. I will use my TabletPC’s ink feature to grade the students work. I will go back into WebCT, which will allow me to access the rubric already sent to each student. From there I will be able to use my ink feature to grade and provide feedback about their project. 6. Students will be able to go to WebCT to see the graded rubric and my comments about the piece. 7. For this particular assignment, students will be using the laptop the entire time until they print off the pictures and mount them on construction paper. 8. The laptops will prove useful in the beginning stage of a project where the students are planning, researching, and brainstorming to get different ideas. My main concern is that students stay on task and don’t misuse the technology. To help prevent this from happening I plan to monitor my students work whenever possible. By doing this I can see who needs help and who’s distracted. 9. I don’t foresee having many projects that are done primarily on the computer; however I do feel that using the laptops during the planning and researching stages will prove to be very valuable. 10. I have high hopes for this program as being a way to level the playing field so all students have an opportunity to succeed. With all new strategies comes new obstacles I guess I won’t know what adaptations to make until I come face to face with the problem.
