COACH NOTES (IF APPLICABLE): Coach: The students should click on the simulated PDA if there is an update on the scenario. The students will be doing a Web Walk in this lesson and might have trouble navigating. Have them bookmark the course webpage so they can always get back if they get lost in cyberland. THIS WILL CORRESPOND EXACTLY TO THE
Activity Check List for Introduction Unit Week 1: Lesson 4 Do Homeostasis and Sports Drink Web Walk Contribute to Threaded Discussion ACTIVITY: Web Walks: We will be taking our first Web Walk in this activity. A Web Walk is a set of instructions laced with internet sites relevant to the topic under discussion. The “Go To:” command tells you to click a link and is usually accompanied by helpful suggestions. Return to the Web Walk instructions when you have covered the material by clicking the “back” button. The next link you need will be found back in the Web Walk instructions. The Web Walks have been carefully constructed to lead you through the development of a concept much like a teacher would do while presenting a lecture or lesson in a face-toface class. Be sure to go to the sites in order and follow the instructions as given. If there is a related assignment, it will be clearly indicated. Otherwise, you may want to take notes as you move along the Web Walk. To take notes, open a new Word document and copy, paste, or type relevant information into that document. Save them to your hard drive or a disc. Taking notes digitally is good practice for this course, as well as good preparation for your future in higher education institutions. During the Web Walk, you might have trouble navigating. Bookmark the course webpage so you can always get back if you get lost in cyberland. Homeostasis and Sport Drinks Web Walk:
Iowa Learning Online: Anatomy & Physiology Go To: http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/HOMEOSTA.html (Homeostasis: Resistance to Change - Principia Cybernetica Web) for a description of homeostasis. Note the different ways homeostasis can be applied (biologically, socially, etc.). 2) If all the water were removed from a human body some 30 kg of assorted salts would remain. Despite the impression given by Start Trek or Red Dwarf where dried people are represented by a tiny pile of salt crystals, 30 kg is a lot of material. Imagine 15 bags of sugar poured all over the floor. Go To: http://physioweb.med.uvm.edu/bodyfluids/fluid1.htm (Fluid Compartments in the Body, University of Vermont). The human body is 60% water. This site shows how that 60% is compartmentalized into several major divisions. You will not be expected to remember the divisions, but you will be expected to remember the main idea. 3) Sports drinks have been the subject of recent scientific study. Read the article, “Play Harder, Longer” by the University of North Carolina Medical School’s Dr. Don Kirkendall as he explains new findings. Go To: http://www.poweringmuscles.com/soccer.asp?article_number=9. 4) As a result of such studies, bodybuilding.com reports on a new sports drink, Accelerade. I am not advocating nor selling this product. Rather, I want you to Go To: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/end/acc.html and critically look at the description and marketing of this product by Endurox that claims to “speed more energy to working muscles—faster!” To further investigate the claims, look at Accelrade’s comparison chart to other sports drinks (Go To: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/end/acc1.html). 5) Consider the following questions: a) Have you ever consumed a sports drink? If so, why? b) Did you think about its effects scientifically? c) What do sports drinks have to do with homeostasis? Go to the Threaded Discussion area and respond to the discussion questions. Respond to at least two other persons with a thoughtful comment (more than “I agree. Or “You are right.”).
