									COE Presents Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Community Event

(St. Petersburg, Fla.) February 16, 2009 – Basketball legend Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar will highlight the lives of America’s greatest black heroes and
deliver an important and inspiring message of African-Americans’ contributions to
their country during a community event at USF St. Petersburg.The Debbie and
Brent Sembler Florida Holocaust Museum Lecture Series at the College of
Education is sponsoring Abdul-Jabbar on Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m. in the
Campus Activities Center, located at the corner of 6th Ave S and 2nd St S in
downtown St. Petersburg. A book signing will follow the lecture.“This lecture
series and its important topic represent the community engagement that is
central to the mission of our College of Education,” said Vivian Fueyo, PhD, dean
of the College of Education. Considered to be one of the greatest
basketball players of all time, the 7-foot-2-inch Hall of Fame center dominated
the NBA for 20 years. Abdul-Jabbar was the NBA’s MVP six times and set
all-time NBA records in nine categories. His NCAA career included three
consecutive national championship wins with the UCLA Bruins. In 2008, he was
chosen The Greatest Player in College Basketball History by ESPN.Since retiring
as a player in 1989, Abdul-Jabbar remains intellectually active and balances his
love of basketball with his love of history. A best-selling author of six history
books, his latest book is On the Shoulders of Giants: My Journey Through the
Harlem Renaissance. His other books also focus on African-American culture
and history.Since 2005, he has been the special assistant coach for the Los
