Michael F. Easley Governor State of North Carolina Office of the Governor For Release: Date: IMMEDIATE March 22, 2005 Contact: Lauren Mims Phone: 919/733-5612 GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES 49 NEW JOBS FOR IREDELL COUNTY One North Carolina Fund Grant Helps Brings $40 Million Investment in the Area RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley announced today that the Polymer Group Inc. (PGI), a leading manufacturer of nonwoven materials, will expand its operations in Mooresville, creating 49 jobs and investing $40 million in the area during the next two years. This announcement was made possible in part by a $150,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund. “PGI’s decision to expand their operations in Mooresville is proof that our investments are benefiting both new and existing industries in North Carolina,” said Easley. “We will continue our efforts to ensure that North Carolina’s business climate remains ranked near the top while increasing the skills of our workforce so that our state remains highly competitive in the global economy.” Polymer Group Inc. is one of the world's leading producers of nonwovens for use in medical, hygiene and industrial applications. The company will install a new production line to meet customer demand for its products in North America. The anticipated average weekly wage for the new full time jobs will be approximately $720. Polymer operates 21 manufacturing facilities throughout the world including two in North Carolina, which currently employ 421 people. The Mooresville operation employs 170 workers. “We are implementing plans to grow in every major region of the world and Mooresville is vital to our success,” said PGI’s chief executive officer, James L. Schaeffer. “We have a longstanding, successful relationship with North Carolina and have found that the skilled workforce, low cost to do business, and support from state and local officials have made it a great fit for our company.” The One North Carolina Fund helps the state recruit and expand quality jobs by providing financial assistance to businesses or industries deemed by the governor to be vital to a healthy and growing state economy. Through the use of this Fund, more than 14,000 jobs and $1.8 billion in investment have been created since 2001. Other partners who made this announcement possible include the N.C. Department of Commerce, the Town of Mooresville, Iredell County, North Carolina Community College System and Duke Energy.
