What’s in a Name?
In the late 1800’s, on the north side of Fort Worth, Texas, cattleman Marion Sansom began a grass roots cattle operation. The headquarters of this enterprise was located on Azle Avenue and eventually came to be Azleway Ranch. In 1972, Mrs. Vera Connell Neighbors provided the house and grounds as the base for a children’s home. Seven years later, with the construction of Loop 820, the house was torn down and the facility closed. The dream, however, remained intact as Azleway relocated to Tyler, where hundreds of children continue to receive care today.

2 • “Not just a home, an opportunity!”
From our
DIRECTOR
Several weeks ago, I went to a training that reminded me once again that all of us have the power of choice. While most of God’s great creation from the Animal Kingdom are creatures of habit, man has been given the ability to choose. The speaker reminded us that there is no excuse for focusing on negative thoughts when we can control our thoughts. He referred to a scripture in Phillipians, where Paul, imprisoned and thinking that he faces imminent death, says, “Give Praise to God. Be joyful in Him. Keep your thoughts focused on that which is pure and good and right.”
Today, more than ever before, we need to keep our eyes on that which is important. That special time with our children before and after school, the opportunity to celebrate success at each and every milestone from report cards to family visits, and the relationship building that comes through playing, staying, and worshipping together. Scripture tells us “Whatever you do unto one of the least of these, my children, you do unto me.” If that is indeed the truth, what are you doing with God these days? As you turn through the pages of stories and wishes in this publication, there is a child and a gift that has your name written all over it. For some, it will be multiple children. For others, it is only one. Whichever the case, don’t fail to do what the Spirit prompts you to do! For some of our faithful supporters, Christmas at Azleway has become a wonderful tradition. This year, let it become your choice in how to do that which is pure and good and right for the One who has always provided for you! Make it more than a habit, but instead, use your calling to involve your friends, your church, and your family in something really special. Christmas is always a joyous time filled with pleasant plans, family, sounds, and smells that are unique to the season. This year, as we begin the Christmas Season, the Azleway family has been touched by tragedy. As we struggle to cope with the loss of two of our young men, we are getting a late start on sharing with you the dreams and wishes of over 400 boys and girls. As I write this piece, I know that each of you will want to do your part to insure that no child goes unnoticed. Choose a Child, Pick a gift, and Make a Difference! Billy M. Partridge, Executive Director We are currently in the process of building an all purpose field at the Pine Mountain Ranch for the kids to be able to participate in recreational activities. This all purpose field will also allow Pine Mountain to hold community festivities from time to time. “It is important for the children to have an inside facility for recreational purposes.” says Larry Wilburn, Pine Mountain Director. “We are praying for the funds to construct an indoor Recreational Center for the children at Pine Mountain.”

The field and Recreational Center are a very important part of the treatment process. Therapeutic Recreation plays a vital role in rehabilitation and healing for the majority of the children in our care. Please pray with us for a miracle at the Pine Mountain Ranch.
A SUMMER TO REMEMBER
By: Bill Partridge
W
hen I was first invited to bring some of our young people to Shepherd of the Ozarks for the SWA summer camp, I was really hesitant. Could we find the right kind of kids that would “fit in” with the other children? Or would I get into a situation far from home that was impossible to deal with? For over 3 months, we played the movie for the children and staff, showing the first class accommodations, the sizzling steaks, the river rapids, and the beautiful scenery, and after all that time, we had some nibbles. On the first week of August, I left Tyler with 2 boys from Big Sandy, and one from Overton. We met up with six boys from Niva Shalom and five girls from the Metroplex. What a ragtag group we made! The video did not do the scenery justice. The majesty of the mountains, the clarity of the water, the comfort of the facilities; all were so much more than we imagined. (We were later to learn 4 • “Not just a home, an opportunity!”
that it was in this place Mercy Me composed the song “I can only imagine.”) The funny part was that I met 2 of the boys I was with for the first time the week before, and the other I had known from the Boys’ Ranch. As we descended into the valley just above the camp, we all held our breath due to the steepness of the road. When we walked into the main lodge, the first night’s service was already underway. We were welcomed into a group of about 110 teenagers from children’s facilities across Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma that were joining together for this special “retreat.” Our evangelist for the week was Scott Werntz, a youth pastor who makes frequent mission trips to Russia, and his Bible study for the week was from The Revelation. Now I don’t know about you, but I sort of “duck out” when someone starts to preach or teach from The Revelation. To be honest, I just
do not understand it. Well, here I was in the middle of Arkansas, miles from anywhere, responsible for a group of teenagers I didn’t know, stuck listening to lessons from The Revelation. God must have known we needed that, because for the next 6 days, the preaching, the teaching, the singing, the fun, and most of all the fellowship brought all of us closer to each other and closer to God. From tubing the lazy river, to jumping into the cold water, to zipping on the Zip Line, to riding horses, to hiking up the mountain and exploring the cave, each experience just brought us closer. Each night after the fellowship, the young men and young ladies had free time at the snack shack, and I just knew that I would have to chase them into the cottages. But at 10 p.m. sharp, every last one of them went to their assigned cottages and broke up in groups, pulled out their Bibles, guitars, and harmonicas and shared with one another in ways I had never dreamed.
the activities, and at least 10 stood up to praise someone, give a testimony, recite a poem, share a talent, or in some other way, illustrate what great kids they are! They kept saying how AWESOME the camp was and it got to a point that I told them they had to find another word. They didn’t, and by the time camp was over, I found myself saying everything was AWESOME too. In fact, it was so awesome, two of our boys committed their lives to Christ and were baptized that Sunday morning in the river. The picture, at the beginning of this article, of Darin, staff from Niva Shalom, Scott, the preacher, and the two boys with their arms on one another’s shoulder is one I will never forget! As we traveled back to Texas, each of the kids asked if we could go again next year. My response: “Try to keep us from it!” Thanks to Al & Barb McDonald for the great camp experience, to the SWA & The J E S Edwards Foundation for sponsoring this life-changing event. To those who haven’t gone yet, get ready for the trip of a lifetime!

I didn’t mention that the camp was 3 miles from the nearest cell phone service, and the only road into the camp was being resurfaced, so the first 3 days we were at camp, I was totally out of touch. And guess what? Azleway got along just fine without me (in spite of the 17 messages waiting on the 3rd day). I also failed to say that I had a birthday while I was at camp, and no one was supposed to know. But someone made sure the camp people knew, so you know that I got embarrassed! Stories Highlighting the Dallas / Fort Worth Children’s Services Division of Azleway
“I’ve always wanted to become a police officer. I remember seeing them in the neighborhood when I was little. Not everyone liked the police, but everyone respected them.”
Deandre is a 19 year old first year college student majoring in Criminal Justice. He has been in foster care, in the Dallas Fort Worth area, since the age of six. Although his childhood was filled with disappointments and pain, he is adamant that nobody feel sorry for him. “I try to always be positive. Feeling sorry for yourself will just hold you back.” Deandre shared “I want to finish college, get my degree, and help people.” Deandre is motivated to have a successful future. Although he has more freedom, now that he is on his own, he understands the responsibility to stay out of trouble. “I don’t take my freedom lightly.” said Deandre. Deandre has had many special people in his life who have taken the time to care. “The person I remember being most special to me was a CASA worker named Tracy. I had a bad situation happen several years ago and she was so good about listening to me and helping to find a solution.” Said Deandre “I lost touch with her, but I will always remember how much she cared for my well being.” When it was time for Deandre to go to college the Azleway staff, his current foster parent, Audrette Moore, and his previous foster parents, Peggy and Edward Rogers all pooled their resources to furnish his dorm. “We are so proud of Deandre. We are excited to see his dream of becoming a police office start to take shape.” said Amy Martini, Azleway Case Worker. Way to go Deandre! You are an inspiration to thousands of children who are struggling to find hope for the future. We at Azleway are proud of you and wish you great success and happiness.
Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?
How would you like to receive a package for box seats to a Dallas Cowboys football game? Well that is exactly what happened for the Aguilar family. There were screams, laughing and even tears as children realized that the two men who were bidding on the football package, at the Azleway Charity Golf Classic Dinner, had just donated it to them. The children were overwhelmed that these men would give THEM a chance to see the Dallas Cowboys play. Thank you to Craig Haile & Darin Deaton, Azleway Board Members, and Sandy & Elta Sandell the donors of two Dallas Cowboy packages. The children had a fantastic time at the game. Memories were made that will last a lifetime. The Aguilar are Azleway foster parents who care for 10 children, from the ages 4 to 17.
What happens to kids who age out of the system? Unfortunately for a large number of youth the answer is “the streets or the criminal justice system”. Several years ago the Transition Resource Action Center or “TRAC” was incorporated. TRAC works with youth who are aging out of care to assist them with obtaining housing, jobs and other needed resources. While TRAC’s main office is in downtown Dallas, they realized that many youth in the Tarrant County and Mid-cities areas do not have ready access to transportation. Azleway’s office offered a central location for a satellite office. Several months ago a TRAC office and a computer lab for youth became a joint project with Azleway Children’s Services. The joint services didn’t end there. When TRAC employee’s mentioned a need for maternity clothes, Azleway expanded their clothing store to meet those needs as well as the need for suits and dress clothing for job interviews. Papa Bill’s Store has also been opened to any TRAC youth needing groceries. Together, TRAC and Azleway continue to look for areas to make a difference in the lives of children and young adults one child at a time.

Daniel came to Azleway at the age of 12. He was angry at the world, trusted no one, and felt abandoned. Now more than 10 years later, Daniel looks back with a grateful attitude for those who took the time to care. “I wasn’t the nicest person to be around. I got mad a lot and I wasn’t shy about telling anybody who would listen how I felt.” said Daniel. “I remember feeling trapped, I had no options, I was stuck here whether I liked it or not.” After several rocky years at the Ranch, Daniel was ready for foster care. Much thought and consideration went into the process of choosing the right home for Daniel. Bill, Azleway Director, (then foster parent) recalls the time, “I was very apprehensive about agreeing to take Daniel into my home. Would he fit in, or would I have nothing but trouble?” Eventually Daniel did fit in, “Daniel won my heart by winning other peoples hearts.” “The people at church loved him, I guess they could see past the hard shell into the potential of who he could be someday.” Bill recalls a special person from the Tyler area, who took Daniel under his wing. “Kenny Gill taught Daniel to work on cars. The two of them would help single mothers, and others from the community by repairing their cars.” “I really think Kenny showed Daniel how to live a Christian life through his actions.” When asked about his experience in foster care Daniel shared, “Bill & Dana’s house was the first real home I remember being in. For the first time I felt secure.” “My favorite time was Christmas, the decorations and rooms full of presents. I loved it when Santa came to visit.” Daniel still struggled throughout his teenage years. Although while in foster care he was able to get a car and job, he was still very guarded. “I could tell he was happy, but he rarely let it show. Dana and I had to be very careful how we reached out to him. It was obvious he had been hurt by adults. The only affection we could show was a hand shake.” Bill recalled. Many years went by and Bill and Dana would hear from Daniel from time to time. “Like most kids, he would call mostly when he needed our help!.”
oNE
Just over a year ago Bill got a call from Daniel inviting Bill to the hospital to come see his son. “As I walked into the hospital room I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I saw overwhelmed me. There was Daniel, holding this tiny little baby, all of his hard exterior melting away before my eyes. It was truly a miracle.” Daniel will be the first to tell you that his child and his wife have changed the way he sees everything. “From walking into a room, to the language I allow others use around my family, everything has changed. It’s not just about me anymore.” Daniel is now working at Azleway, as the Purchasing Director, and living on Ranch “It is just about property with his wife Alana “It’s like trying to care and son Braydan.Daniel. “The coming home.” said for people, the strangest part is working with the way Christ cares people who used to take care of me.” “Alana and I hope to become foster parents some day. I have a lot of experience and knowledge to share with kids who may be going through tough times.” “I am so thankful I had a good foster home. Bill helped shape the kind of father and husband I am today.” Bill is quick to disagree that he alone made that type of impact. “It is just about trying to care for people, the way Christ cares for us.” “Every day thousands of foster parents are making an impact on the lives of children.” “During the tragedy this summer with our two boys, I realized that our relationship had come full circle. Daniel saw my pain during the memorial service for the boys and put his arm around me to comfort me.” “What a change!” Daniel’s desire is for the community to know that Azleway is a great place. “I was not a great kid, but Azleway stuck with me. I want people to know how much good Azleway does for children in need.”

Christmas represents hope, love, peace and joy to most of the world. For the children of Azleway Christmas can be a very hard time. Although most of the children of Azleway have been removed from homes full of abuse and neglect, Christmas is a time children miss home and family, no matter how destructive the environment may have been. Today you can make a difference in the life of a child. Every child listed in this special section is in need of somebody to show them that hope, love, peace and joy still exist. Whether you choose a boy or a girl, a baby or a teenager, simply by choosing a child you are showing them someone cares. If you are interested in “adopting” a child for Christmas please be sure to call the contact listed prior to purchasing gifts. This helps us to avoid duplications and ensures EVERY child has a special day. The following is some important information regarding the commitment you have made in selecting a child to purchase gifts for. We ask that you take a few minutes to look over this information. 1. This is a solid commitment. The gift/child you have chosen is now considered by Azleway to be “taken care of” for Christmas. If you do not purchase the item you have committed to, this gift will not be given because we will not know the need exists. If you are unable to keep this commitment for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact Toni Rambo at (903) 566-8444, ext. 217. We would much rather you call us, than have one of our children go without. 2. All items need to be wrapped, marked and delivered by Thursday, December 14. We ask that you mark each gift with the child’s name and age (as it appears on the list) and the item inside. You can label the gift with either a Post-it note or a separate removable tag. If the gift is not marked, we will not know which child it should go to. 3. We ask that you not give perishable items as a gift. 4. Have fun!! If you have adopted a child, they are “yours.” Feel free to go beyond the list in whatever way you would like. Personal letters, a book that was special to you as a child, anything at all to add a personal touch. Have fun, and be creative! (If you do write a letter, we ask that you tape it on top of the gift and not include it inside the wrapped gift.)

on’t let the cute looks and shy eyes fool ya. This girl is amazing. It seems that she can fit into any situation with ease, and is not the least bit afraid of an adventure. Angel loves to be the center of attention. What child doesn’t? Angel is “cute as a bug.” This 9 year old is full of life and love. Angel enjoys being busy and thrives in one on one relationships. As with any child who is in need of a forever family, Angel has her fair share of special needs. She is a good student and makes good grades, but does have behavioral issues in the classroom. She is a little tomboyish and somewhat of a “pack rat.” Stability and consistency is what Angel needs, and is looking for. Above all, Angel will need a family who can give her one on one attention. She needs a secure and established home. The family must be committed for a lifetime of love, special memories, and protection. While at the photo shoot for this article, Angel wrapped the photographer Holly around her little finger. It seems Angel has a gift of making every person in her life feel special. Angel will do best as the only child in her forever family or as the oldest child. Although Angel is very out going, she will need time to learn to trust. She will also need to continue weekly counseling.

Give the Gift of Happiness this Season!
The 2006 Dignity U Wear Holiday project is underway at Stein Mart located at 2125 S. Broadway. Azleway was chosen in 2004 to receive up to four shipments per year of brand new clothing for our children. A contribution can be made to the Dignity U Wear Holiday project at any register, and can be made in honor of, or memorial to, any friend or family member. A complimentary acknowledgment will be sent to let them know that the gift has been made in their name.
Azleway receives partial funding through the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services, Texas Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse and East Texas Probation Department. The balance of program costs are made up by corporate sponsors, businesses, private individuals and grants through public and private trusts and foundations.

Crisis on the HERO MISSION FIELD Helping Elderly
Resident’s Out
From yard work, to shopping, to putting up Christmas decorations, the kids of Scroll Creek at Big Sandy are making a difference in their community. Not only does this group help out the elderly, they are also responsible for cleaning the Big Sandy Football Stadium every Saturday after Friday Night Football. These H.E.R.O.’s are adopting two Gladewater nursing home residents for Christmas and will be earning money to buy them presents. Big thanks to Holly Lake Chapel for coming out weekly to teach the boys Bible studies.

No, on the mission field of childcare you may never hear a child say “thank you” or witness a family being restored. All I want Give the Gift of the Word for Christmas
What child doesn’t need the comfort, guidance and wisdom the word of God supplies? Most of the children have asked for a monogrammed Bible for Christmas this year. Will you help us? If you or your group are interested in supplying the children of Azleway with a monogrammed Bible, you may choose a name from the wish list or we can help you by providing a name who has not yet been chosen. Please be sure to contact us prior to purchase to help us avoid duplication.

Many of the young adults in the P .A.L S.M.A.R.T. Program are in need of some TLC. The Holidays can be especially difficult for children who have moved out on their own. Especially for children with little to no family resources. “We have always done something special for each person and given a gift card.” said Pat Yarbrough, PAL Program Director. “With the growing number of young adults, we are unable to meet the need this year.”

“how To Stay off Drugs”
The reason you want to stay off drugs is to be successful in life. The first thing you have to do is have your mind made up. If you don’t have your mind made up, you start to think what if. What if it’s not that bad. What if I like it. What if it makes me cooler. You also have to have family support. That helps you a whole lot. Your family can tell you what is right from wrong, if you don’t already know, especially your older family members. You really just need to avoid certain situations. This will help you out. If you avoid certain situations there’s a small chance you won’t come in contact with drugs. When you come in contact with drugs be firm and just say no. If they ask you again, say no and walk away. You need positive peers to help you out. Your peers can help you stay in school and have fun without drugs. If you are into sports that is also a good thing. Most people in sports don’t like drugs or people who do drugs. If you are not into sports you need to pick up some hobbies like lifting weights, playing on the computer, horse shoes, and building puzzles. This will keep your mind off drugs. The reason I am informing you of all this is because I did the wrong thing and did drugs. It messed up part of my life. I’m not going to say all of my life because I am just 15 years old. God gave me a second chance and I took it, I’m turning my life around. I hope you take my advice and use my mistakes to your benefit. Daniel , age 15 Daniel entered the Wilderness Program in May. He is currently on probation. Daniel is in the 9th grade and is an honor roll student. His hobbies include camping, fishing, basketball, football, hiking, arts & crafts, and boating. Daniel has achieved his first level in the bead system of the Wilderness Camp and is an active leader in his group.
QUESTION: What do Couches & Luggage have in common?
ANSWER: They are both items that the children of Azleway need. Many children are in need of luggage for visits home or upon relocation, and couches are a high priority for the Boys’ Ranch and the Therapeutic foster homes. If you are interested in donating “gently used” or new items to Azleway please contact us at (903) 566-8444 ext. 217.
The PAL Program has 50 young adults that need gift cards. - 50 gift cards @ $25 each = $1,250. We could use the actual cards, or money to purchase them. Suggested cards are Wal-Mart, Target or bank cards such as Visa or Master Card. Please contact Pat Yarbrough, AZLEWAY PAL SMART Program Coordinator at 903-834-3368 if you would like to help.
Cars for Kids
Calling all cars. Every day Azleway children are getting jobs, heading off to college, or even to sports practice for school. Our children do not have the luxury of parents who will provide them with the tools to succeed. THAT’S WHERE YOU COME IN. Perhaps you have a working vehicle just sitting in your driveway. Well, we can use it. Please contact Azleway at 903.566.8444. We’ll even come get it!
