Email Account Information
• Why is JWU email needed?
– Primary form of communication @ JWU
– Provides secure access to e-mail, public folders,
shared network disk space
– Provides access to the computer labs
• E-mail address information can be found in
uconnect personal information
• Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA)
– Web-based e-mail: email.jwu.edu (no www!)
– Access your e-mail from anywhere you can get on
the Internet

Email Account Tools
• E-mail Password Reset Manager
– Allows you to securely reset your own forgotten
password
– Otherwise, you must visit a computer lab
– Requires you to set up a Q&A Profile
• Spam Management – McAfee
– To protect from nuisance e-mails and viruses
– Intelligently filters all inbound e-mail
– Quarantined mail is kept for 14 days, then deleted
– Summary report appears in your Inbox if you
have potential “junk” or “spam” messages

JWU ResNet
• Each residence hall room has network access
• Must provide own network cable
• Gaming systems are allowed on the network
• Personal wireless access points, routers and
DHCP servers are not allowed due to security
risks
• Peer-to-peer file sharing is restricted
– An attempt is made to prioritize academic traffic
over entertainment traffic

Network Admission Control (NAC)
• Ensures a safe, secure and reliable network
– Prevents infected computers from accessing the
network and infecting other computers
• Students must install the NAC Agent and meet
requirements set forth by JWU
– Temporary access is given to fulfill requirements
• JWU provides McAfee anti-virus software at no
cost to all students
• Systems are checked on a weekly basis - keep
your computer up to date!!

JWU Wireless Access
• WI-FI spots are located all across the campus –
visit the Help Desk for current locations
• Students connect to the "WIFIJWU" network
• Open a browser and log into NAC for access
– Same requirements for NAC will apply
• Reminder: personal access points are not
allowed in rooms

Computer Labs
• Three primary lab areas - Harborside, Xavier and
Academic
• Computer access is also available in both libraries
• General-purpose labs as well as labs equipped
with specialized software applications for certain
curricula
• Students need an active JWU e-mail account to
access the computers
• Black-and-white printing is available
– Two-sided printing is required
• Hours are available on the Help Desk web site

Responsible Computing
• Review and adhere to the Computer Use Policy
• Protect all passwords & never share with others!
– Use “strong” passwords
– Keep it secret like you would an ATM number
– University employees will never ask you for your
password, nor should you offer it
• Do not participate in illegal file sharing
– Copyright violations
• Do not leave valuables unattended
– Purchase locks!
