Scale Drawings
Objective: Students will use proportions to determine and comprehend how to read and create scale drawings.
Introduction: “Can you predict how big an image will be as you change the distance between the projector and the screen?” Have the students discuss what they know about using an overhead projector and what strategies might they use to solve the problem. 1. Place an image on the overhead and locate the projector as close to the screen as possible. 2. Measure the width of the image and the distance between the screen and the overhead. Record the results. 3. Move the projector back and repeat step 2. Move the overhead several times and record the results. 4. Using the data, encourage the students to calculate the ratio. 5. Return the projector to the original location, replace the image and measure. 6. Dialogue with students whether they could determine the width of the image. 7. See check for accuracy by using the ratio from the previous image.
Main Lesson: Read and create a floor plan scale drawing 1. Students receive a graph paper handout with a rectangular room drawn in conjunction to a scale given (1 inch = 4 feet) 2. As a class we will determine the ratio of the scale. 3. Next, we will write the proportions and solve for the length and the width of the unknown for the bedroom. 4. The worksheet will include written dimensions of four additional rooms to be created. 5. Teacher will guide the students in creating the first room using the given dimensions and the scale provided. 6. Students will then work independently on the next three rooms.
Closure: 1. The class will come together and go over all the dimensions of the rooms. We will then address any problems the students are having. 2. Students will then create 3 additional rooms or home improvements (furniture, hall closet, pool, yard, etc.) and give the dimensions they used. If not completed in class it will become homework.
