Otherwise visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park with a game cruise. This safari takes a new route from the middle of October 09. Contact the office for the exciting details of our new route. Countries Visited: Uganda, (Rwanda), Kenya Highlights: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Mountain Gorilla Trek, Masai Mara 24 May - 27 Sept 09 departures or Queen Elizabeth National Park for a game cruise on the other months, Orphanage visit, Whitewater Rafting on the White Nile, Village experience, Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Naivasha, Rift Valley, Sheldricks Animal Orphanage, Nairobi. Safari structure: This safari gives you the opportunity to see many of the highlights of East Africa. The safaris are made up of components. You may find other travellers on the truck that will just travel with us to see the gorillas, as well as others who will stay on to travel further south into Tanzania. Please feel free to contact us if you would like further details about your safari plans. 2 Introduction: Africa has without doubt some of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife. On this safari you have the chance to view much of this wildlife in its natural habitat. We also visit centres where some very special work has been done to assist different species such as the chimp sanctuary at Ngamba Island, Joy Adamson’s Elsamere and Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage. This region of Africa boasts a wide variety of primates from mountain gorillas to chimpanzee, as well as many different monkey species. For bird lovers the forests of Western Uganda in particular support a wide variety of species whilst Queen Elizabeth enables you to view a large number of raptors and water- birds. We visit Queen Elizabeth on departures 24 October 08 to 15 March 09 and here can take a boat cruise for a different view of this spectacular park to see hippo, crocodiles as well as elephant and other animals of the plains. Lake Nakuru is home to lion and leopard as well as black and white rhino, giraffe, zebra and many different antelope, but is particularly famous for its soda lake and the associated flamingo population. And then from 22 Sept to 13 October 08 and 24 May to 27 Sept 09 we visit the Masai Mara looking for the vast herds of wildebeest and zebra on migration. We will also take time to visit in local villages throughout the safari. The women of Buhoma may sing for us. In a couple of the villages during the fortnight a guided tour can be arranged such as to the Maasai Centre in Hells Gate National Park. If you wish as well you can also volunteer to help out in a local school in Jinja, Uganda. Those who want some real excitement can raft on the grade 3 to 5 rapids on the White Nile, quad bike or bungee. The trek to visit the gentle mountain gorilla in the Virungas is of course one of the main highlights. There will also be several other opportunities for guided walks as well as to cycle and canoe. The scenery we pass on safari is varied and breathtaking. Viewing from the truck is excellent. As we travel you will be overwhelmed by the friendliness of the local people. A wave, a smile and jambo (hello) are never far away. Whilst much of the topography in Uganda is flat, the drive through to the Virungas where the gorillas are located takes us into a world of densely forested mountainous terrain. Subsistence farms are evident in the many small plots on the terraced volcanic slopes. Entering Kenya, as we head south the views across the Rift Valley are stunning, presenting sweeping vistas of sharp escarpments, with rivers, mountains and lakes dotting the plains. Extending in Kenya from Lake Turkana to Lake Natron, the Rift Valley is one of the most dramatic geological features on earth. Whilst in comparison with other destinations in Africa the distances we travel are relatively small on this route do though be prepared for a few long drives and some areas where road conditions can be poor. The trip is well paced and not strenuous whilst our days are quite full. We camp throughout. Upgrades are also available. Conditions in campsites can vary. Having the truck we are able to get to some very beautiful off road and special places, do though be ready for occasional rough conditions. The 16 day Gorilla and Game Park kitty covers:Two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) including a prepared group barbecue and contribution towards the final game meal in a Nairobi restaurant. The following core game park entries and other highlights Lake Nakuru National Park, The Masai Mara, Queen Elizabeth National Park Camping throughout the safari The kitty is the group’s money. It is paid to the safari leader in Africa who manages it for the group. Operating a kitty gives the group control over a lot of what happens on the safari. The kitty has been realistically costed to allow you to eat well and also camp in secure sites. Kitty also covers the game parks and some of the other highlights. Any remaining funds in your kitty are returned to you at the end. At lunchtime we encourage you to get out independently to mix with the local community, shop in the markets or try a local cafe which allows you choice to “do your own thing’. You will find in many villages when we stop for lunch, the locals will bring food to you - samosas, nuts, fruit and hard boiled eggs - all brought to the side of the truck by street vendors and all sold without you having to leave your seat! Or try meat or chicken kebabs or a local favourite, the chip omelette. Drinks are cold and plentiful. 4 Pre and post safari information We meet you on the evening prior to the departure date at Entebbe Tourists’ Hostel and Campsite where you can camp with the truck familiarising yourself with the tents and equipment and meet everyone with whom you will be travelling. The following morning we visit Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria. This 100 acre forested island provides a safe haven for the 32 orphaned chimpanzees that are now free to roam the island. The focal point of the visit is the opportunity to get close to the chimps at the 11 am supplementary morning feeding. A raised walkway allows for easy viewing. We also enjoy a traditional smorgasbord lunch including locally caught fish. Returning in the afternoon we drive through to the capital, Kampala to spend the night at a campsite in the city. Day 2 Leaving Kampala early we stop over at the equator for photos, and then travel on to the beautiful Lake Bunyoni sitting in the steep, terraced Mfumbiro Hills. The lake is known as “the place of little birds”. Weaver birds who plait complex globular homes may be seen in the trees and perhaps an elegant crowned crane, the national bird. 5 Day 3 This morning there is time for a swim or to canoe on the lake before the truck drives through to Ruhengeri or Kisoro on the border with Rwanda and Congo from where we can trek at in Rwanda, in the Parc Nacional de Volcans. Alternatively we trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Day 4 Bwindi is a forest that survived from the Pleistocene, so has species of animals and plants that have died out elsewhere and both parks sport giant lobelia and senecio plants. On the drive in to Kisoro and Ruhengeri the string of volcanoes dominate the setting but the gorillas are what we are looking for. Gorilla trekking commences at 8 am. Your trekker will explain to you how to behave once with the gorillas. As we set off through the plantations the local women can often be seen and heard singing as they work in the fields. On the trek there can be some steep ascents and it can also be quite slippery under foot. The guides take their time to ensure all fitness levels keep with the group and the walk allows you to experience an extraordinarily rich and varied ecosystem. Once with the gorillas in their mountain habitat we have an hour with these rare and gentle giants. Days 5 and 6 Once the group have trekked we relax with a celebratory meal before travelling through on the months 24 October 08 to 15 March 09 to Queen Elizabeth National Park for our first game drives and a cruise on Kazinga Channel, allowing us to see elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, Uganda kob, crocodile and pods of hippo. The park also has lion, giant forest hog and leopard. Outside these months we alternatively arrive in Kenya earlier for game drives in the Mara. Day 7 to 10 We drive through to Mpambire Village to admire the work of the traditional royal drum makers and perhaps bargain for a drum to take home, before travelling through to camp by Bujagali Falls. White water rafting is an exhilarating option with rapids from grade 3 to 5 to negotiate. You can also swim, fish, take a village walk or get involved in some volunteer community project work in a local school. Either way it is a beautiful destination to take a day to relax. KENYA Days 10 and 11 Refreshed from our stay at Jinja we drive towards Nakuru to overnight at Kembu, a working upcountry farm nestled into the Mau Escarpment. Kembu means “chameleon” and many of these small creatures can be found in the grounds. Days 11 and 12 We leave for Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its soda lake which attracts greater and lesser flamingos who feed on the algae and crustaceans in the waters. To see numbers of these birds rising off the lake like a pink cloud is breath taking. Game drives also allow us to view the other wildlife in the park such as lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra and rhino. Tonight we camp in the Park. Days 12 and 13 Following an early game drive we head for Naivasha and Joy Adamson's Elsamere for a video about her life and afternoon tea in the grounds, the black and white colobos monkeys coming down to sit on the lawns at the conservation centre, which is now Joy's home. That night we camp by the lake at Fisherman’s Campsite. Birdlife including herons, darters and storks can be found around the lake margins. In the evening watch the hippo come out onto the lawns. Days 14 and 15 A walk or cycle in Hells Gate National Park is next on the itinerary. The Maasai Cultural Centre within the park is also worth a visit to find out about traditional ways of life. Alternatively we can take a boat across to Crescent Island. On departures 22 Sept 08 to 13 Oct 08 and 24 May to 27 Sept 09 when we have a good chance of seeing the world famous herds of wildebeest, zebra and Thomsons Gazelle on migration we now travel through to the Masai Mara for game drives on the rolling grassy plains. Africa’s notorious predators particularly lion are usually not far behind. Leaving the park we visit a traditional Maasai village. Day 16 This morning we leave for Nairobi stopping at the Rift Valley Lookout before visiting Sheldrick’s Animal Orphanage for the the rhino feeding and the elephant play session. The Sheldricks are famous for their work in Kenya’s parks and Daphne in particular for her pioneering 6 work with orphaned baby elephants. Our last stop is Langatta Giraffe Park where we can hand feed the quiet, lordly giraffe including the Rothschild giraffe. We have a last meal together at a restaurant in the capital. Taxi transfers to the airport and any overnight accommodation requirements can be arranged. Please note: The above is given as a guide only. Your crew will select the most favourable route to take depending on local conditions. Many factors need to be taken into consideration when organising the final itinerary including political considerations, road and weather conditions, and where and when animals are best viewed. You are travelling a vast distance on this safari to see most of the highlights of East Africa. During the safari there are a few days of essential full days of driving. Your crew will give you a choice where they can as to how best break the drives depending on information at hand in regard to local road conditions, camp facilities and options the group may wish to do on the way. For further details please contact the London Office. Thank you. Please note the itinerary varies depending on the time of year so we can visit in the world famous Masai Mara in Kenya during the period when the migration has usually reached the Mara. On these dates we will reroute after the gorillas to return to Kampala and on to Jinja to relax for a couple of days before heading into Kenya on Day 9 or 10. We won‟t in consequence be travelling out to Queen Elizabeth National Park on these months. Arriving in Kenya we still visit Nakuru National Park, before heading to the Mara camping at Naivasha on the way. Also do be aware when gorilla trekking only 8 people trek at a time. This is in order to protect the species. Your permits are bought ahead of time to avoid undue delay. Remember some of the highlights are optional. Do remember to budget for those you might wish to do. In regard to optional excursions there are usually choices of other things to do when you choose not to do an optional excursion. We keep busy day to day and these then are useful times to write emails or letters, get your washing done etc as well have a look around the local community. Food and drinks and sometimes a swimming area are available at the campsites where we park the truck. You will find the facilities at campsites will vary. Hot showers and flush toilets are not that unusual! The toilets are sometimes long drop style in Kenya and Uganda. Accommodation upgrades are also available at some campsites on route. 7 Meals and cooking on the truck Day to day meals are prepared from the truck using both the non perishable supplies we buy in bulk prior to the safari and fresh supplies we buy as we travel. Staying fit and healthy is a priority as we do keep busy and we want you to enjoy all you do. Everyone takes turns on a roster basis cooking for the group, being “assistants” to the cooks and with the clean up. The safari leader assists with menus, recipes and loads of ideas. She/he is also available to provide support and encouragement at any time during meal preparation. Cooking together is loads of fun and all part of the group experience! The sort of meals provided day to day are spaghetti and pasta dishes, stir fries, cottage pies, kebabs, curries, stews and casseroles, hamburgers or jacket potatoes, which are then complemented with rice and/or salads. Breakfast is usually fruits, muesli and/or other cereals, toast, as well as some regular cooked breakfasts like eggs, bacon, baked beans or pancakes. There are also a few pre-arranged meals booked ahead of time so the whole group can occasionally relax in the evenings in the knowledge that someone else is doing the cooking. This also frees up the itinerary so you can enjoy a little more of Africa. The kitty also can contribute in part to a meal in one of Nairobi‟s famous restaurants such as Carnivores. For vegetarians throughout the trip we do all possible to ensure a good supply of vegies, salads, fruits, beans, pastas and rice. The diet is primarily vegetarian day to day as fresh quality meat is difficult to access and very hard to keep. Instead the diet leans towards pastas, rice as well as fresh fruit and vegetables when available and in season. When eating in restaurants and when meals are ordered ahead of time vegetarian options are available with usually good supplies of fresh fruits, veggies and salads. Do be aware though how spoilt we are in the Western world with our constant supplies of fruit and veggies regardless of the season. In reality and more naturally fruit and vegetable supplies are seasonal, may not be as chemically assisted and can also be difficult to access on route. We will do all possible to ensure supplies where possible. When booking do remember to let us know if you have any specific dietary requests. Clean drinking water is also a vital consideration on safari. At most campsites the truck can easily access clean drinking water. Where this is not the case it is advisable to buy your own bottled water which is readily available. 8 Details on Trekking the Mountain Gorillas The mountain gorilla is a highly endangered species whose plight warrants ongoing international attention. There are only 720 mountain gorillas left on the planet as at the last count. Trekking the mountain gorillas is one way of channelling much needed funds towards their survival, the money you pay for the permit going to the Ugandan or Rwandan parks and the local communities. Mountain gorilla numbers continue dangerously low. Trekking can then allow you to spend an hour with these extraordinary creatures whilst also assisting their survival. On average 30 to 40 people trek successfully with us each month in the gorilla parks. In order to assist you and avoid difficulties at the parks gorilla permits are booked and paid for in advance so that all those who wish to trek can get to see the gorillas without delay. Do be aware without permits serious delays can occur, itineraries are affected and a lot of pressure may be put on the Parks‟ authorities. With a booked permit it is very, very likely you will see the gorillas quite quickly. It is very rare that the gorillas not be found whilst there are never 100% guarantees. To find the gorillas you will trek in their forest home, up steep inclines and in dense jungle. The park guides are expert at finding them and helping the gorillas feel comfortable and at ease with their visitors. The gorillas are trekked in their natural habitat of thick, forested mountain terrain. Your guide and the trackers do everything possible to locate the gorillas quickly on your trek but it can be sometimes a long whilst very beautiful hike. Bear in mind at other times they can be found within an hour. In both Bwindi in Uganda as well as at the Volcanoes park in Rwanda, armed security patrols go with you on your trek. In order to not unnecessarily disturb the gorillas, and as they are genetically so similar to humans, visitor numbers are kept very low and you only have an hour with them. If you are booked on a gorilla trip we will aim to be in contact with you approximately four to five months prior to departure to make arrangements for your gorilla trek and will ask for payment in advance so that we can purchase your gorilla permit for you. In regards to the security situation in the region the British Foreign Office Travel Information continues to advise that tourists can travel to the gorilla parks in Rwanda and Uganda whilst encouraging caution at the border regions and advising against all travel into the Democratic Republic of Congo. If you would like further information about trekking the gorillas please feel free to contact us. We are more than happy to discuss any aspect of the gorilla trek with you. Weather Kenya and Uganda straddle the Equator but in general temperatures are moderated by altitude. The warmest months are from December to March. Around the Virungas it can still get quite cold at night as you are at altitude and also on the drive through the Rift Valley in Kenya, particularly around Eldoret, so remember to bring a fleece. Temperatures in Kampala range from the mid to high twenties while Nariobi„s temperature range is from the low to mid twenties, the cooler months, being from May to August. The rains in Uganda tend to fall from mid September to December and then March to May but in Western Uganda and in the Lake Victoria region it can rain almost any time of year. The main rains in Kenya come from mid March to May, with some intermittent “short mango rains” in November and December. 9 How to bring your money You are asked to bring your kitty and money for visas in US$ cash. You are also advised to carry your money for optionals and personal spending money in either USD or UK pounds cash. A small quantity of travellers cheques are also advisable for security reasons. Do be advised that using credit and debit cards in East Africa is very rarely possible once on safari. Visa and passport requirements Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months after your intended date of departure. A visa for Uganda will be required for most passports which can be paid on arrival at the airport in Entebbe. The cost is USD 50. If arriving in on the day of departure we would ask that you get your visa ahead of time if possible. When trekking the gorillas in the Parc Nacional de Volcans some passports will also need a visa for Rwanda, which is obtainable at the border. Australians, Dutch, French, Italians, Irish and New Zealanders require visas for Rwanda. This visa is 60 USD. British, South African, German, American and Canadian passports do not currently require visas for Rwanda. Most passports need a visa for Kenya which is easily organised at the border on safari. The cost for most passports for a Kenyan visa is 50 USD. Please note that visa requirements can change without warning. Immunisation Requirements In Africa you will be travelling in a Continent where you may well come in contact with diseases and parasites that you might not have come across before including malaria and bilharzia. It is essential then that you speak to a medical professional with expertise in travel medicine. The immunisations usually suggested are: Yellow fever, Typhoid, Polio, Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Meningitis, Tuberculosis and Diphtheria. Please note also an International Certificate of Vaccination against yellow fever must be carried on safari. It is also essential to take a course of anti-malarials. The best way to avoid malaria is to guard against being bitten as well as stick to your chosen medication regime. Essential Equipment We ask that you carry your possessions in a back pack (65 - 85 litre maximum) or soft carry all. Day to day necessities can also be kept in an additional small day bag. As well as your normal clothing and toiletries we would suggest a warm all weather jacket, swimming costume and walking boots with a good tread for the gorilla hike. For footwear day to day you will be most comfortable in sandals. Apart from personal items you will be required to bring: Sleeping bag - 3 season, roll mat, eating utensils, torch and a small personal medical kit. 10 Add on - 4 day safari visiting Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park Safari into the Crater and Serengeti, a fascinatingly beautiful and wild region which is a unique sanctuary for African wildlife. On a lucky day you might also spy a cheetah. Then travel across the vast grasslands of the Serengeti which in combination with the Masai Mara is part of a revolving stage – 4,000 square kilometres over which nearly two million herbivores migrate closely followed by predatory lion, cheetah, leopard as well as hyena play out the famous migration year in, year out. The best dates to visit the Serengeti are usually from late November to June. -------------------------------------------------------------------Day 1 Half Day transfer to Arusha, Tanzania by overland truck, crossing at the Namanga border to pitch tents at the Meserani Camp site. We then visit the Crater the morning of the th 4 day returning late afternoon to Arusha For further information please contact the London Office. 11 Statement - Travelling with Absolute Africa The many countries to which we have travelled for many years have, and will continue, to undergo significant change. They face huge challenges - socially, politically and economically. There are no easy or simple answers to these challenges. The nations we visit are some of the poorest in the world and the situation in regards to health, education, transport and communications can leave one overwhelmed. Tourism is usually very welcome and can bring both good and bad. Our aims are to consistently work for positive cross-cultural exchange and to ensure that we honour and respect the hospitality shown to us from country to country. Buying directly and fairly where ever possible from local peoples on the ground is a major way we directly contribute to economies. Dealing direct day to day with ordinary people on the streets makes a difference. As we travel careful consideration is given to what we give and leave behind in sometimes fragile and troubled environments. Leaving campsites cleaner than when we arrive, considering carefully what is a fair exchange in transactions, respecting rules and regulations to protect parks and wildlife, and day to day creating a climate of positive open exchange, mutual tolerance, respect and greater understanding are all part of the day to day workings of the company on all levels. The financial incentives that can come via tourism to protect the environment and foster positive relations cannot be underemphasised. We are firmly committed to the belief that by the sharing of ideas and experiences, and with a willingness to get to know and understand difference, the planet and its inhabitants can benefit.
