Before using the player, be sure to note the following recommendations: > Never try to disassemble the player. > Never beat, strongly shake, or abuse player. > Do not expose player to the following environments: high heat, extreme cold, dusty or humid places. > Use a dry cotton cloth to clean the player shell. > Do not use chemical or liquid cleansers on the product. > Contact the place of purchase if you have trouble with the player. > Check the HOLD switch if player is not responding to your commands (*Optional). > Replace the battery if: a. “Low Battery” indicator appears. b. Player turns on briefly and then shuts off. c. There is no response to pressing buttons and you have checked the HOLD switch (*Optional). d. Basic Function Turning on the player Press the PLAY button once to turn the power ON, Player is on when the LCD screen displays a backlight. Turning off the player While the Player is on, press and hold PLAY button for 3 seconds to turn OFF the power. Operating in Music Mode While the Player is on, press the PLAY button to begin playing music, the LCD screen will display the ID3 tag which shows the current song name, artist, the total songs, the play time of the current song, etc... > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the song you would like to play. > Scroll and hold the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to fast forward and fast rewind current song playing. -9- > While playing music, press the PLAY button again to pause the playback. Changing volume Increase (+) or decrease (-) the volume by pressing the volume control buttons ( ), the LCD Screen displays the volume level at the same time. + or Using A-B repeat function > While playing, press down on the MODE button once to select Point A of the repeat segment, the “A-” mark will show on the screen. > Press down on the MODE button again to select Point B, the “A-B” mark will show on the screen. The music will be repeatedly played between Point A and Point B. > Press down on the Mode button for a third time, the repeat segment will be cancelled. Navigation Mode >Locate the navigation folder by pressing the MODE button for approximately 1-2 seconds after powering on the player. >Press the MODE key again to enter the navigation folder. -10- >You are able to search through your music, find a particular artist or choose a folder that you wish to listen to. >To enter the ROOT menu, press the volume (-) down button >Use the MODE button (↔) to scroll through your list of folders >If you want to play an entire folder press the PLAY button >To enter a folder press the volume (+) up button. >Use the MODE button (↔) to scroll through the artists/music in that folder. >If you want to play a certain song press the PLAY button. >To return to the Navigation folder, press down on the MODE key >To play all songs in the root menu, press down the MODE key for 1-2 seconds (while in the ROOT menu or root submenu) Creating Folders in Navigation >Plug the device into the USB connector. >Select “OPEN FOLDER TO VIEW FILES…” option >Click on FILE >Scroll to NEW and highlight FOLDER -11- >Type in the name of the folder (I.E. Jazz, Rock, etc.) Operating in FM Tuner Mode > Press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds to activate the main menu. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to highlight the FM Tuner menu. > Press the MODE button to enter. > If you are entering the FM mode for the first time, the player will automatically scan all stations in FM band and store the effective stations with a sequential channel No. and its corresponding frequency. When the scanning is complete, it will return to the RADIO mode and show CH01 and its corresponding frequency ● Operating with FM Radio Mode > In the FM tuner mode, press the MODE button repeatedly until the LCD screen displays the Radio icon. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the previous channel or the next channel. > Press the button to decrease the volume. > Press the button to increase the volume. ● Scan the Channel + -12- ● ● > In FM tuner mode, press the MODE button repeatedly until the LCD screen displays the Scan icon, press the PLAY button to start scanning. > You can select this function to auto scan all stations in the FM band and store the effective stations with a sequential channel No. and its frequency. When scanning is complete, player will automatically return to Radio Mode. Note: While scanning, all buttons are inactive until the scanning is complete. Store the Channel > In the FM tuner mode, press the MODE button repeatedly until the LCD screen displays the Store icon, press the PLAY button to confirm. > After finished storing, it will prompt “Success”. When storing is complete, player will automatically return to Radio Mode. Record the FM content > In the FM tuner mode, press the MODE button repeatedly until the LCD screen displays the Rec icon, press the PLAY button to start FM content recording. > The screen will display the recording file name (e.g. /FM/F002.WAV), the recording time, and the remaining record time. > Pause the recording by pressing the PLAY button once, press the PLAY button -13- ● again to resume recording. > Stop the recording by pressing the MODE button once. > You can playback the recorded file in the Music Mode. Exit > In the FM tuner mode, press the MODE button repeatedly until the LCD screen displays the Exit icon, press the PLAY button to confirm and exit. > Select this submenu to exit to the Music mode Operating in Voice Record Mode > Press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds to activate the main menu. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to highlight the Record Menu > Press the MODE button once to start recording. > The screen will display the recorded file name, the recording time, and the remaining record time. > Pause the recording by pressing the PLAY button once, press the PLAY button again to resume the recording. > Stop the recording by pressing the MODE button once. -14- > Begin playback of the recorded file by pressing the PLAY button once. > After you are finished recording, activate the main menu by pressing the MODE button once to select another menu item or select the Music menu to return to the Music playback function. Note: While recording, only the PLAY, HOLD and MODE buttons are active. Operating in Voice Playback Mode: > Press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds to activate the main menu. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to highlight the Voice menu. > Press the MODE button to confirm. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the recorded file you would like to play. > Press the PLAY button to start playback. Note: You can use the A-B repeat function using the same procedures found in the Operating in Music Mode paragraph. Using Delete Music (or Voice) Mode -15- > Press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds to activate the main menu. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to highlight the Del menu. > Press the MODE button again to enter. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to highlight the Delete Music files or Delete Voice files menu. > Press the MODE button to activate. > The LCD screen will display the music (or voice) file name to be deleted, a “YES / NO” mark is displayed on the screen at the same time. Note: If there are no music (or voice) files in the player, it will not respond with an action if you press the MODE button. You will need to select the Exit menu to exit. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the music (or voice) file that will be deleted. > Press the or button to select the YES or NO prompt. > Confirm deletion of the selected file by selecting the YES prompt and then pressing the PLAY button. + -16- Operating in the Settings Mode > Press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds to activate the main menu. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to highlight the Settings menu. > Press the MODE button to activate. > There are 9 sub-menus with corresponding sub-menus in the Settings menu, they are listed below: 1. EQ Set  5 selections: Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classical, Pop. Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the desired option and press the MODE button to confirm selection. 2. Play Mode 6 selections: Normal, Repeat All, Repeat One, Random, Random All, Preview. Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the desired option and press the MODE button to confirm selection. 3. Contrast you can adjust the LCD contrast (darkness) in 10 levels to fit your desired display effect. Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to increase and press the MODE button to confirm selection. -17- 4. 5. 6. 7. Backlight Set the backlights continuous lighting time in the range of 0-45 seconds. Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to decrease or increase, press the MODE button to confirm selection. Power Set 4 selections: DISABLE, 2Min, 10mins, 30mins Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the desired option, press the MODE button to confirm selection. Record Set Set the recording parameters. Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the desired option or press the MODE button to toggle and select its sub-option. Use this option to choose the quality of recording. Higher quality means less recording time. Language English&GBK English&Big5 中文&简体 中文&繁体 -18- 8. 9. English&Kor English&Jap English&Eur French German Italian Exit Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the desired language, press the MODE to confirm selection. EL Color Yellow, Purple, Red, Cyan, Green, Blue, White, Auto. (This menu is optional, if the player has only one color backlight, this menu will not appear.) Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to select the desired color, press the MODE button to confirm selection. Exit Exit the settings operation menu and return to Music Mode. Using About Mode -19- > Press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds to activate the main menu. > Scroll the MODE button forward or backward (↔) to highlight the About menu. > Press the MODE button to activate. > The screen will display as below: Ver:2.521 INT:256MB FREE: 238MB -> The player’s firmware version -> The total memory space. -> The free memory space. Connect with the PC > Use a USB cable to connect the player with the PC. > The player will power on automatically, a connecting picture will be shown on the LCD screen of the player. > The player functions as a removable disk, it can download / upload any files. When the player is not connected with the PC, all files not in a MP3/WMA /WAV format will not be shown on the screen. -20- > At this time, you can FORMAT the player as if formatting a hard disk. Install the Win98/SE Driver Only Windows 98/SE operating systems need installation for the driver, follow the steps listed below: > Insert the driver CD into the CD-ROM: > Connect the player with the PC USB port directly or by USB cable. > Win98/SE OS will prompt that it has found a new device and will search for its driver, select the directory to the F:\ Driver for Win98 (F is the letter of CD-ROM drive) > Click “Next” -> “Next” to finish the installation. > Click the “Yes” button to reboot the PC. Caution: > Do not unplug the Player while it is downloading file(s), this can be harmful to the Player. > If the Player doesn’t work properly, try taking out the battery and reinserting after 3 seconds. If the problem persists, try a new battery. -21- Lock key function (*optional): All the keys are unworkable when the HOLD switch is pushed to the ON position. This function is useful when you are walking, running etc. -22- Upgrade/Recovery firmware Attention: Do not use this operation unless the MP3 player doesn’t work correctly (e.g. the player can’t be powered on.) or we issue a new software version for the player. 1. Install the Software 1.1. Insert Driver CD into the CD-ROM of the computer. 1.2. Enter the “F:\Firmware Setup” folder (The F: is the CD-ROM letter of the computer). Note: Some players do not offer the firmware in the bundled driver CD. You will need to get the firmware as a .zip file from the internet. You can unzip this file to a folder, enter this folder and operate as instructed below: 1.3. Double click the “Setup.exe” file to start installation. 1.4. Click the “Next” -> “Yes” -> “Next”-> “Next” -> “Finish” buttons in every prompt window to finish the installation. 1.5. After finishing the installation, the computer will prompt you to reboot. Reboot the computer. 1.6. If you want to delete the player upgrade software, you can click start -> program files -> Sigmatel MSCN Audio PlayerUninstall to uninstall the software. Note: Don’t connect the MP3 player to the computer before or during the installation of -23- the software. Remark: The first time running SETUP program is for installation. The second time running is for uninstall. 2. Upgrade/Recover the software of the player. 2.1 Connect the player with the computer while pressing and holding the PLAY button, continue pressing for over 5 seconds. 2.2 Right click on My Computer -> Property -> Device Manager, wait until the player Recovery Device Class appears in the device manager. 2.3 Click Start (in the bottom left corner of the computer screen) -> Program Files -> Sigmatel MSCN Audio Player -> Firmware Update. A pop-up window will appear. 2.4 In the firmware upgrade window, click the “Start” button to start the firmware upgrade. Note: Make sure you stop your player properly. Use the Eject, or safely remove USB Mass Storage Device option, to disconnect the player from your computer. Failure to disconnect the player properly will result in corrupted files or music tracks, and/or possible player malfunction. -24- C. Trouble Shooting: 1. Can not play MP3/WMA files compressed by own user? Answer: The player only supports a standard compression mode; when user compresses MP3/WMA files, select the Standard Compression option. 2. How many minutes of music can I save on the player? Answer: Different flash drives have different capabilities. Usually a 1 minute MP3 file is up to 1MB. If you have 128MB/256MB of memory, the player can save up to 128min/256mins music. 3. I can not download files? Answer: Check to see if the USB cable is connected with PC and player properly, Make sure the player is powered on. Check if USB driver is installed under Win98/SE OS. Check if the player’s memory is full or not. Power is too low. 4. I lost the data? Answer: Data is lost because the voltage is not stabilizing when a file is downloaded. (We strongly advise backing up all data, our company will not be held responsible for any loss of data) -25- 5. Why do the different music files have different volumes? Answer: MP3 music files have different volumes because the parameters are different. 6. Nothing is displayed on the screen when the player is powered on? Answer: Check to see if the power is too low. Check if the HOLD switch is off (*Optional). Program is lost, need to recover or upgrade the program. -26- D.
