This award is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Graduate College recognizes graduate students who show exceptional mentorship of undergraduates and junior graduate students in their assistantships. This award is aimed at graduate students who work closely with others in research and other settings across the university, and is open to graduate students in the Biological & Health Sciences; Humanities and Fine Arts; Math, Physical Sciences and Engineering; and Social Sciences and Education. One first place award and one second place award will be given in each of these divisions. The first place award will include a $175 prize and second place will include a $75 prize. Honorable Mentions will also be awarded. Awards will be announced on March 31st, 2007 at the awards ceremony for the James F. Jakobsen Graduate Student Conference, however, students do not need to participate in the Jakobsen Conference to be nominated for this award. Nominations may be initiated by the graduate student’s faculty advisor or another faculty member or supervisor. All materials are due February 12th, 2007. THE OUTSTANDING GRADUATE STUDENT AS MENTOR AWARDS have recently been established by the Graduate Student Senate, working with the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Graduate College. Four graduate students will be awarded outstanding mentor awards this year, one in each of the following divisions: Humanities and Fine Arts; Social Sciences and Education; Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering; and Biological & Health Sciences. WHO MAY BE NOMINATED? Graduate students working towards the Master’s or Ph.D. at the University of Iowa who have mentored at least two undergraduates or junior graduate students are eligible for this award. HOW TO NOMINATE: Nominations should be made by a faculty advisor of the nominee, or by another faculty member or supervisor at the nominee’s assistantship site. Nominations must follow the guidelines specified in this packet. All materials must be submitted to the Graduate Student Senate c/o the Graduate College (205 Gilmore Hall) no later than February 12th 2007. Any questions about the nominations process or who may serve as a nominator should be directed to gradsenate@uiowa.edu. GENERAL GUIDELINES: Nominator Recommendation: Faculty advisors or assistantship supervisors may nominate a graduate student mentor. The nominator should fill out the Cover Sheet and Faculty Form. Recommendations from Current or Previous Mentees: Two current or previous students of the nominee should fill out the student form. These forms should be included with the nomination packet when it is submitted to the Graduate Student Senate. Statement of Mentoring Philosophy: The nominee should include a statement of mentoring philosophy. Please see the attached form for more information. Brief Curriculum Vitae: The nominee should include a one-page resume/CV, which lists educational and professional experience, honors and awards, and publications. Assistantship site refers to the department/program/office where the nominee conducted the mentoring that is being discussed in these materials. If this site is not housed within the nominee’s department, the nominee should submit a brief statement at the end of the mentoring statement about the relevance of the assistantship at the assistantship site to the nominee’s academic and career goals. This brief statement should not exceed 250 words.

A COMPLETE NOMINATION PACKET MUST INCLUDE: Four (4) copies, preferably stapled, of the following (1 original + 3 photocopies is ideal):       Cover sheet, filled out and signed by the faculty nominator. Faculty nomination form, completed by the faculty nominator. Statement of mentoring philosophy, written by the nominee. Statement of assistantship relevance, written by the nominee – only if assistantship is outside of the student’s department, see above. Two letters of support completed by current or previous students who were mentored by the nominee. Nominee’s Brief Curriculum Vitae.
