Overview Many Silicon Valley companies increasingly conduct business outside the United States. Yet, most emerging growth companies make mistakes in conducting international business that may cost them dearly. International rules regarding taxes, employees, joint ventures, intellectual property, and corporate formation vary, but raise the same issues: how can a company expand its business, without committing the same common mistakes made by others. This program brings together several experts in advising companies as they conduct business internationally. The program will address the top mistakes companies make. The presentation will focus on practical advice that will be useful to companies making their first international ventures, as well as more sophisticated companies with established operations.
ASVC has invited the following industry leaders to share their experiences and strategies to help entrepreneurs avoid these mistakes: INTRODUCTION: David Frazee (Shareholder – Greenberg Traurig) David is an attorney who assists clients in exploiting and defending their intellectual property rights through strategic counseling, litigation, transactions, and licensing. He focuses in helping emerging growth companies plan to become public companies, in developing comprehensive, strategic intellectual property programs, and in international transactions, especially those involving Greater China. Navin Chadda (General Partner – Gabriel Venture Partners) Navin Chaddha is a 3-time entrepreneur, executive and venture investor with a proven track record in growing startup companies to industry leadership and eventually successful exits. At Gabriel Venture Partners, Navin focuses on investments in the areas of Enterprise Software & Services, Infrastructure Software & Systems, and Business Process Outsourcing. Navin also spearheads Gabriel's international efforts with India. Prior to joining Gabriel, Mr. Chadda was a Venture Partner at Mobius Venture Capital and focused on cross-border US/India investments. Robert M. Maurer, M.B.A. (CEO – Altagene) Mr. Maurer has 25+ years of experience in the biotechnology field and was senior executive at the following companies: Vice-President of Business Development Ciphergen Biosystems, Vice-President of Business Development - Avigen, and Vice President of Strategic Marketing - Promega. Prior to this, he had held a variety of management positions during his 17 years at Abbott Laboratories Diagnostics Division. On December 11, 2006, China will officially open its banking sector to foreign banks, removing geographical and client restrictions and allowing foreign banks to conduct renminbi business. While China phases in these reforms, the sector is seeing a wave of mergers and acquisitions as foreign firms seek to expand their presence in China and Chinese firms prepare for greater competition. These changes not only create opportunities for financial services firms, they also create opportunities for Bay Area IT equipment, software, consulting and training firms who are currently targeting the banking sector. Cal Asia, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce Commercial Service and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, is sponsoring this seminar to provide a snapshot of China's banking system as it prepares to meet WTO obligations. Cal-Asia and the Commercial Service will also explore how U.S. firms can sell their products and services to Chinese commercial banks. The seminar marks the launch of a series of programs and activities that will include briefings with 30 Chinese Commercial banks, and a delegation to Beijing of California firms serving the financial sector. Seminar topics (subject to change): * Overview of China's banking system * Status update on China's WTO banking sector commitments * What technologies and services do China's city-level commercial banks need? * How to sell your products and services to China's banking sector
