They used to spend practically 24 hours a day together running and operating their small family farm in Bakersfield, California. He would harvest feed and hay while she drove the bale truck behind him. Then, one fateful day, Glen was driving home from making a delivery to another local farm when a car pulled out in front of him. He was killed instantly in the accident. Now Jennifer and her two young children are barely managing the farm on their own. She and the kids have hardly had time to mourn Glen‘s death, much less to keep the farm running or make repairs to their small 100-year-old dilapidated farmhouse. While the design team, contractors and over 150 workers upgraded the Elcano‘s farm and transformed their 1000-square-foot house into a Western delight in just seven days, Jennifer and her children -- Michael, 11 and six-year-old Ashley -- went on vacation to Disney World. ABC Media Relations: Jeff Fordis (818) 460-6676 -- ABC -- ENTERTAINMENT January 24, 2005 IN THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL SWAP YET, AN ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE TEXAS MOTHER WHO BELIEVES GAYS ARE “DEPRAVED” TRADES PLACES WITH A LIBERAL LESBIAN MOM, ON ABC’S “WIFE SWAP” Each week, from across the country, two families with very different values are chosen to take part in ―Wife Swap.‖ In a two-week challenge, the wives from the two families exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover what it‘s like to live a very different woman‘s life. It‘s a mind-blowing experiment that often changes their lives forever. This week, in ―Boone Luffey/Gillespie,‖ an ultra conservative, anti-gay mother of three from Texas swaps lives with a liberal lesbian mother from Arizona. ―Wife Swap‖ airs WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9 (10:02-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. Kristine Luffey (33) and her partner, Nicki Boone (30) have lived together for three years in a committed lesbian relationship. The couple shares a modest three-bedroom home in Arizona with Nicki‘s biological daughter, eight-year-old Elizabeth. Parenting responsibilities are shared equally, and Elizabeth‘s two mommies make a point of exposing her to diversity through their numerous gay and straight friends. Elizabeth has a TV in her room and is allowed to watch PG-13-rated movies. The women are politically liberal, and Nicki actively lobbies for gay rights. Both mothers work—Kristine as a hospital administrator and Nicki in a university business office. At home Kristine does most of the cleaning and yard work, while Nicki detests and avoids most chores. ―Cooking‖ is a quaint euphemism for microwaving prepared food, which the family usually eats off paper plates. Kristine and Nicki believe you don‘t need money to enjoy yourself, and that laughter will get you through any situation. Kristine travels to Texas and swaps places with 42-year-old Kris Gillespie, an anti-gay, AfricanAmerican conservative Republican wife in an interracial marriage. Kris‘ husband is 47-year-old Brian Gillespie, and together the couple have three children: 16-year-old Michael, 14-year-old Jackson and 12-yearold Catherine, who is being raised in the traditional gender role of ―The Princess.‖ The Gillespies are die-hard supporters of all things Texan, especially George Bush. Kris, a stay-at-home mom, and Brian, a business consultant, proudly run what they call ―a PG home,‖ screening and withholding any music, movies, video games or books they deem inappropriate for their children, including the classic gay empowerment book, ―Heather Has Two Mommies.‖ The children must also constantly strive to meet what their mother proudly calls her ―excellence‖ standard, including the formal table they must set for dinner, with china place settings designated by an instructional chart. Kris believes her ―job‖ is to keep her husband happy with home cooking and pristine housekeeping. She enjoys what she refers to as the Gillespies‘ ―privileged life.‖ While Kris and Brian preach tolerance, Kris adamantly denounces gays as ―depraved.‖ The family philosophy is to work hard and succeed. According to Kris, ―It‘s great to be a Gillespie.‖ In the first week of the swap, Kristine reveals her sexual identity to the Gillespies and chafes under their conservative views and stringent rules for cooking, cleaning and perfect table settings. Meanwhile, Kris Gillespie seethes at the gay lifestyle she‘s exposed to in Arizona, barely able to stomach it, or Nicki‘s microwaved meals and liberal views. In the second week of the swap, the women change the rules, turn the tables and let loose with their emotions. Kristine upends Brian‘s conservative order by taking him to dance at a gay bar, and allowing the Gillespie kids to have a rambunctious sleepover with their friends for the first time. Meanwhile, Kris and Nicki engage in a heated argument about gay marriage and gay rights, and Kris impresses young Elizabeth with special ―princess for a day‖ treatment. But the gloves really come off in the most explosive post-reunion discussion of the season, when one mother‘s positive feelings about the experience are shattered by another‘s deeply personal and judgmental tongue-lashing. With the swap over, is it possible for the two families to be civil, let alone bridge their differences? ―Wife Swap‖ is an RDF Media production. It was created by Stephen Lambert and is executiveproduced by Lambert and Jenny Crowther of RDF Media (―Faking It‖ and ―Junkyard Wars‖) and Michael Davies of Diplomatic (―Who Wants to be a Millionaire‖). Wendy Roth is the co-executive producer. A TV parental guideline will be assigned closer to airdate. Ray was living a happy life as an Air Force veteran and mailman in Arizona when, out of nowhere, his life took an ugly turn. At the age of 37, he was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit. He was forced to spend ten years in prison, two of which were on death row. Even though Ray was innocent and had an alibi, he was arrested for the murder of a woman who happened to be at the same bar he frequented. Ray felt confident during his trial that the jury would find him innocent. He was wrongfully convicted and labeled the ―snaggle tooth killer‖ because his teeth appeared to match the bite marks on the victim‘s body. He was sentenced to death row. While Ray was in jail, he never gave up hope, and studied law while his family kept appealing the conviction. After 10 long years, re-examination of the DNA evidence unequivocally proved Ray‘s innocence. In fact, the actual killer confessed to the crime, which made Ray the 100th person exonerated for a murder conviction. Since his release, he has become a motivational public speaker and travels the country to educate people about his experiences. After being robbed of 10 years of his life, Ray is extremely unhappy with his appearance, as he has aged immensely with the stress and pain from the last decade of his life. An ―Extreme Makeover‖ decriminalizes his looks and finally removes his pain when he looks into the mirror and sees the so-called ―snaggle tooth killer.‖ Ray‘s procedures included rhinoplasty, brow lift, upper and lower eyelid lift, liposuction of chin, laser resurfacing, acne scar excision, hair transplant, hair restoration, LASIK eye surgery, Fotofacial, polaris treatment, sonopeel, sonofacial, oxygen facial, Smoothbeam laser, filler to acne scars and nasal labial folds, muscle relaxer to forehead, 4 extractions, 4 permanent implants, 17 da Vinci porcelain crowns and veneers, and Zoom whitening. Schulz‘s famed comic strip, will air SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12 (8:00-8:30 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. (Rebroadcast. OAD: 2/14/02) The debut of ―A Charlie Brown Valentine‖ in February 2002 gave ABC its highest Adult 18-49 rating (3.5/10) with entertainment programming in the half-hour in nearly 1 year – since 3/22/01. Among Adults 1834 (3.5/12), ABC saw its strongest delivery with entertainment programming in the time slot in well over 1 year – since 12/28/00. ―A Charlie Brown Valentine‖ marked the first newly created programming from the ―PEANUTS‖ team in several years. In this special, Charlie Brown finally works up the courage to call the little red-haired girl to ask her to the Valentine‘s Day dance. But once again he ends up broken-hearted and empty-handed when he dials the wrong number and reaches Peppermint Patty instead. ―PEANUTS‖ focuses on the anxieties and joys of childhood as expressed by an ensemble cast of children who often seem wise beyond their years. Among them are the lovable Charlie Brown, who perseveres despite continuous failure; the philosophical, blanket-carrying Linus; the fussbudget Lucy, who dispenses psychological advice for a nickel from behind a concession stand; and toy-piano virtuoso Schroeder. Central to the comic strip is Charlie Brown‘s dog, Snoopy. Cast members include Wesley Singerman (―Charlie Brown‖), Lauren Schaffel (―Lucy‖), Corey Padnos (―Linus‖), Emily Lalande (―Peppermint Patty‖), Jessica D. Stone (―Marcie‖) and Christopher Ryan Johnson (―Schroeder‖). Lee Mendelson is executive-producer and Bill Melendez is producer and director of ―A Charlie Brown Valentine.‖ This program carries a TV-G parental guideline.
