Colonial Cable – September 2005 MESSAGE FROM MORY Greetings fellow alumni – Fall has arrived and the Office of Alumni Programs is busy with a new semester at GW. One of our most exciting annual events, Colonials Weekend, is right around the corner, October 21-23, and several activities have been planned for the weekend. The 3rd annual Kick-off Party, one of our most popular alumni events, takes place on Friday night at Alumni House, followed by Jon Stewart at the Smith Center. Saturday is filled with lectures, Colonials Village – an all-day festival on Kogan Plaza and H Street – and evening entertainment with the Boston Pops. There is an array of other events, including trolley tours of the University, a cabaret showcase on Friday night, and a silent auction benefiting the 2006 Senior Class Gift Campaign. There is something for everyone at Colonials Weekend and we look forward to seeing you there. For more information, see Alumni News, on the front page of the Colonial Cable, or visit our website. Reunions for the classes of 1980, 1995, and 2000 will take place on Saturday night. These occasions are excellent opportunities for class members to revisit GW and reminisce with classmates from the past. For some, such as the 25th reunion class, exploring all of the changes on campus will be memorable. For others, such as the Class of 2000, the weekend is a great opportunity to network with both new and old friends from GW. To register for your class event, or for more information, visit our website. Finally, as you have probably noticed, the Colonial Cable has a brand new look. We wanted to make it as simple as possible for you to access GW news that you find the most important. First, we have arranged the articles in columns, making it easier to scan the newsletter to locate items of personal interest. In October’s Colonial Cable, we will add a series of tabs across the top of the page, linked directly to each of the individual schools, enabling you to access your school’s alumni information quickly and easily. We hope that you like this new version of the Colonial Cable. Please tell us your thoughts – simply e-mail cable@gwu.edu with your comments. The Colonials Weekend celebration is the perfect opportunity for the entire GW community to come together – to reminisce and to celebrate. We hope to see you here in October! Sincerely, [Signature] Scott M. Mory, BA ’96, JD ’99 Executive Director of Alumni Programs ALUMNI PROFILE ON AIR AROUND THE GLOBE
As a student at GW, Dana Bash, BA ’93, took a job at the bottom of the professional totem pole. Now, a little over a decade later, she spends most of her days at the White House. READ FULL ARTICLE Caption: Dana Bash, BA ’93, CNN White House correspondent Photo Credit: Photo courtesy of CNN Bash began her career at CNN during her senior year at GW sorting news reports in the feed room. After graduation she landed a job in the tape library and volunteered in the newsroom. It was not long before Bash was producing news programs including Evans and Novak, Late Edition, and On the Story. In 2002, a position opened for a White House correspondent and Bash has been reporting from the lawn of the White House ever since. Bash recognizes the difficulty of working in a profession that not too long ago was seen as a man’s domain. “I am really lucky because I had people who came before me who really changed things, like Judy Woodruff,” Bash says. “She was one of the first women in broadcasting and is not only a mentor, but someone who paved the way so it was not just the old boys’ club.” Bash has many memorable stories from her life as a reporter. She was at the Capitol on September 11th when the police thought a plane was going to hit the building. And she remembers getting a call on her cell phone at 3 a.m., while driving through a snowstorm, learning that Saddam Hussein had been captured. As a White House correspondent, Bash has earned a reputation for being honest and fair. She attributes her journalistic values to her mentors at CNN and to her GW education. Avi Rasowsky, BA ’05, a left-handed pitcher, recently signed with the Florida Marlins… As a GW senior, Rasowsky had a 2-2 record and a 5.87 earned run average. He pitched 13 games, nine of them as a starter for the team.
Sarah Reinertsen, BA ’98, was profiled on ABC’s Nightline for competing in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship… Reinertsen, an athlete with one leg, was not able to finish the race in 2004 but plans to try again this year. Rachel Zoe Rosenzweig, BA ’93, was profiled in the Los Angeles Times for her work as a stylist to various celebrities including Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, and Jessica Simpson… Rosenzweig, who goes by the name Rachel Zoe, was a stylist for YM magazine before starting her own business in Los Angeles. ALUMNI NEWS MESSAGE FROM ALUMNI HOUSE TO HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES As representatives of The George Washington University family and the George Washington Alumni Association, we reach out to you in the wake of last month’s devastating hurricane. The University feels a strong common bond with each and every graduate, no matter where they reside. We recognize that the consequences from this storm will be felt by many for weeks, months, and years to come. The University has responded to this tragedy by engaging directly in the relief effort. Additionally, GW has welcomed students from Tulane to the University to begin their studies as non-degree students. Wherever you reside, whatever you may face, you will always hold a special place in the hearts of your fellow graduates and be an important part of the GW family. LAW SCHOOL GRAD PREMIERES ON FOOD NETWORK Most GW Law School graduates strive for the trappings of conventional success. Not Warren Brown. Brown, a former litigator, has chosen a career that brings him passion, and not necessarily a lot of money. Brown, JD ’98, MPH ’98, is the owner of the well-known cake and pastry shop Cakelove and its offshoot Love Café in Washington, D.C. Photo Caption: Warren Brown, JD ’98, MPH ’98, owner of the pastry shop Cakelove, will be the host of Sugar Rush, a new program airing on the Food Network beginning in October. This entrepreneur did not always have his sights set on the kitchen. Brown previously worked in the inspector general’s office at the Department of Health and Human Services. After discovering that baking left him more fulfilled than law, he took some time off to develop recipes and hasn’t looked back. Soon he will open a second Cakelove in downtown Silver Spring, Md. Brown will soon be sharing his passion for pastry with people across the country. He is the host of a new Food Network program, Sugar Rush, airing Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. On the program Brown visits restaurants, pastry shops, and bakeries across the country and then returns to his kitchen to cook the recipes he has learned. He also will be the focus of an upcoming episode of Recipe for Success, a Food Network program about people who have changed their careers by entering the food industry. SENATOR MIKE ENZI, BA ’66, TO CHAIR SENATE COMMITTEE Senator Michael Enzi, BA ’66, is the new chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Enzi, a former accountant and shoe store owner, is an advocate for unconventional learning. A quiet leader who is known for working behind the scenes to craft compromise, he favors legislation that would bring changes to the Higher Education Act. GW ALUMNUS BECOMES CONSUL GENERAL TO SHANGHAI Kim Yang, MA ’82, was appointed by the South Korean government as consul general to China’s commercial hub Shanghai. Yang graduated from Yonsei University in Korea before coming to the U.S. to obtain a master’s degree from the Elliott School of International Affairs. He is the grandson of Kim Koo, who was one of Korea’s most revered independence fighters. GW WELCOMES CLASS OF 2009 GW alumnus Edward Vest, AA ’57, BA ’59, MA ’65, EdD ’72, shared personal stories of his time at GW with the Class of 2009 at the annual Freshman Convocation. The Office of Alumni Programs has begun a tradition connecting the incoming class with its 50th year counterpart, starting at Convocation and ending at Commencement, when the two classes will celebrate together.
