John Heyer was enlisted in Company D of the 15th Wisconsin by Captain
Charles Campbell on October 28, 1861. Company D called itself the
"Norway Wolf Hunters," but was also called the "Waupun Company"
because so many of its members were from the Town of Waupun. On
December 8, 1861, John was mustered into Federal service at the rank of
Private for a 3 year term of service at Camp Randall, near the City of
Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin. At the time the Army recorded him as
being 34 years old and married. His residence was listed as the Town of
Strong Prairie, Wisconsi
On January 1, 1862, Private Heyer was appointed to the rank of Corporal in
Company D. On January 14, 1862, the men of Company D were issued
Belgium rifle muskets. After nearly 3 months spent learning to be a soldier
at Camp Randall, Corporal Heyer departed for the war with his company and
regiment on March 2, 1862. He was then listed as being "present" with
Company D during the time it participated in the Siege of Island No. 10,
Tennessee, and the Raid on Union City, Tennessee, in the spring of 1862.
Corporal Heyer was also listed as "present" during the long, hot summer
campaign through the States of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama,
including the grueling 400 mile retreat up to the City of Louisville, in the
State of Kentucky, with the army of U.S. Major General Don Carlos Buell in
August and September. Corporal Heyer was also listed as "present" at the
October 8, 1862, fighting at the Town of Perryville, Boyle County,
Kentucky, which was also called the Battle of Chaplin Hills. While this was
the 15th's first big battle, it emerged without any fatalitie
On December 26, 1862, Corporal Heyer participated in the 15th's desperate
charge upon a Confederate artillery battery at Knob Gap, Tennessee, just
south of the City of Nashville. There the 15th captured a brass cannon. He
then fought at the long, cold, wet, and bloody Battle of Stone River,
Tennessee, also called the Battle of Murfreesboro, on December 30-31,
1862. It is there that the 15th first suffered serious battle casualties, and was
cited for bravery.
The 15th camped in the Murfreesboro area for the next 6 months, except
for 2 weeks in February when it was sent to the Town of Franklin,
Williamson County, Tennessee. Starting June 23, 1863, the regiment took
part in U.S. Major General William S. Rosecrans' Tullahoma campaign. On
July 3, 1863, it went into camp at the Town of Winchester, Franklin County,
Tennessee, for 6 weeks.
On August 17, 1863, the 15th left there to participate in General Rosecran's
Chickamauga campaign. Corporal Heyer was "present" at the daring early
morning crossing of the Tennessee River on August 28th, which the 15th
led. He was also present at the September 19-20, 1863, fighting at
Chickamauga, Georgia -- the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War. He
survived the vicious fighting around Viniard's Farm on the first afternoon, as
well as the near capture of the regiment around midday on the 20th during
Longstreet's Breakthrough. Some 63% of the 15th's soldiers who were at
Chickamauga were killed, wounded, or taken prisoner.
Corporal Heyer then served with the regiment during the Confederate siege
of Chattanooga, Tennessee, which began right after the battle. The siege
resulted in severe shortages of medicine, food, and firewood which, together
with cold, wet weather, caused much suffering, sickness, and death. The
Confederate siege was finally broken by the Union Army's victorious charge
up Mission Ridge on November 25, 1863, which the 15th took part in.
Corporal Heyer was listed as being "absent sick" at Chattanooga, Tennessee,
starting November 28, 1863.
Starting right after Mission Ridge the 15th was engaged in almost non-stop
marching and counter-marching all over Eastern Tennessee throughout the
winter of 1863/1864. By many original accounts, this was the worst period
of the regiment's 3 year term of service. Poor rations, inadequate clothing
and shelter, and unseasonably cold weather made these months nearly
unbearable. Corporal Heyer's absence due to illness was relatively brief, and
he ended up sharing much of these miserable months with his surviving
comrades.
On February 1, 1863, Corporal Heyer and some of the other 15th soldiers
were transferred to the 68th Indiana Infantry Regiment. Those transferred
had declined to re-enlist and thereby extend their service commitment from
3 years to "for the duration of the war." The 15th's soldiers who agreed to
re-enlist were to be sent home on a 30-day veterans furlough, but the Army
kept delaying their departure and finally cancelled it altogether, at which
point the soldiers almost as one decided to cancel their plans to re-enlist.
When this happened Corporal Heyer and the other 15th soldiers were
transferred back to the 15th on April 2, 1863, by order of the War
Department.
Starting in May, 1864, the 15th participated in the famous campaign of
U.S. Major General William T. Sherman campaign to capture the City of
Atlanta, Georgia. This campaign was marked by almost daily marching
and/or combat for 4 months. The 15th took part in the fighting at Rocky
Face Ridge, Georgia, in early May, at the bloody Battle of Resaca, Georgia,
on May 14-15, and at the disastrous Battle of Pickett's Mill (often called
Dallas or New Hope Church), Georgia, on May 27, 1864. There the 15th
suffered 50% casualties, including Corporal Heyer was "slightly wounded in
head."
The 15th also took part in the fighting at Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, on
June 23, before Atlanta on July 22, at Jonesboro, Georgia, on September 1,
and at Lovejoy Station, Georgia, on September 4, 1864. After a rest
following the capture of Atlanta in early September, 1864, the 15th was
briefly assigned to Provost (police) duty in Chattanooga in early October.
This was followed by several months of guarding a railroad bridge at
Whitesides, Tennessee, near Chattanooga. Some of the 15th's soldiers felt
that this was the easiest duty of their war service.
Corporal Heyer recovered from his wound in time to be mustered out of
Federal service with most of the rest of the survivors of Company D on
February 13, 1865, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, upon the expiration of his 3
year term of service. He and his surviving comrades were sent back to
Wisconsin by railroad train, paid off, and released to their homes.

"The reason the certificate said Karen was Mary's mother is because she
was. John Heyer's first wife was Karen (unknown last name). She died and
then he married Susanna (Soneva) or how ever it's spelled.
All records say that Mary was born in Milwaukee. I've hunted for a marriage
record for John & Karen, but never found any. "

thought you'd like to know that Sigrid Reyser, who married Paul Taklo, was
the daughter of Sunneva Aarvoll by a previous marriage. She was not the
daughter of John Heyer, hense the Reyser name has no connection with him.
He had two surviving daughter, Bertha, who married Ole Omholt and Mary,
who married John Omholt, my grandfather.

Well known resident a victim of heart trouble
Mrs. Mary Omholt, wife of John Omholt of Prospect St. passed away after a
short illness of heart trouble at her home, Wednesday at 5 o'clock.
Mrs. Omholt was born in Milwaukee, June 29, 1854, being 65, 9 months at
the time of her death.
When a child, she moved to Adams Co with her parents and grew to
girlhood there. In 1877 she was married to John Omholt at Stongs Prairie,
settling at Biron, later moving to Rudolph on a farm where she resided until
a few years ago, when they came to this city having sold their farm.
Mrs. Omholt has been ailing for some time but did not give up until about a
week ago when she became quite ill and gradually failed until death relieved
her. She was well known in this city at Rudolph and in Adams County. She
was a member of the Scandinavian Moravian church and at one time when
health permitted was an active member in the aid of that church.
She was beloved by all who knew her and will be missed by her many
friends and especially she will be missed by her husband and seven children.

Lawrence and Silas of Rudolph and Mrs. Claus Chilberg of Scottville, Mich.
All the children are here to attend the funeral.

John was born Johan Severin 16 Feb 1856 in Norway. Little is known
about his youth in Norway, except that he came from a large family. In
1872, when John was 16, he immigrated to the USA. He took the surname
of Omholt - the name of the farm in Norway, his mother's surname. In the
immigration record he is listed as 17, a laborer on his way to Kilbourne City.
He went to Adams Co. and probably to the home of John (Johan) Hyer, a
distant relative. He married John Heyer's oldest daughter, Mary (Inger M
Hyar) on March 30, 1878. Marriage record indicated they both lived in
Strongs Prairie, Wis, at the time.
They settled in Biron where he had a job in a saw mill. He got his hand
caught in machinery in a sawmill and had to have the druggist amputate it.
(Mildred Omholt). He apparently received some sort of monetary settlement
because of the accident. The one arm he had left must have become very
strong, because Silas told his son, Garth, that the old man could chop wood
with the one arm just fine and he had no trouble giving his sons a "licking"
either. xxx
He was fondly remembered by a Neice as a man who played with children.
His daughter-in-law, Mildred, related that he and the other Omholt men
enjoyed talking about politics while walking back and forth in the kitchen by
the stove with their hands behind their backs. She also recalled his love of
whiskey. Silas and Mildred lived with John and Mary the first 2 years after
they were married. John and the men of the family would go to town for
supplies and he'd have a few drinks. He knew Mildred didn't approve and
would bring her a box of candy as a peace offering. His grandson, Garth
Omholt, remembered that he'd been told that Grandpa drank bathtub booze
and burned his throat. Silas told his son, Garth, that when his children came
Home from school and spoke English while he was asleep on the sofa, that
he got up and licked them because he couldn't understand what they were
saying. xx
In 1915 the Omholts moved to a house on Prospect ST. in Wisconsin
Rapids. After Mary died and he became ill with cancer of the esophagus, he
lived with his oldest daughter, Tillie, in Rudolph. Lenor Omholt, a
granddaughter, remembered his visit to their home when the tumor was
large. xxx Whenever he had his picture taken, his left arm appears to be in
his pocket, so that the amputated hand was not obvious. He spoke both
Norwegian and English. zx

I have pictures of John Hyer's tombstone, the note has that he is her father.
So there is a question.

Sept 2006: Received a letter from Robert (Gene) Taklo. It contains a paper
with the information information written Jan 29, 1973. This letter
contains birth and death information for Sarah and her middle initial.
May 2007: From Doris Bissell "Great Grandma Sarah J. Hyer's name was
spelled Hyre in the Wisconsin 1880 census she was single at the time
working as a domestic servant but the one with her parents John & Susan
that same year's census has her also listed on theirs but born the same year of
1856 which matches the year which we have on the family tree info and she
& Great Grandpa Taklo were married in 1881 and I believe he lived in
Wisconsin for a time or just had gotten to Wisconsin at that time period from

Feb 2002: We received a copy of Henry Jay Stanley Taklo's birth
certificate with the names of Paul Taklo and Sarah Hyer.
Also, we received a copy of the ledger from Hennepin Co, Minnesota with
the birth dates of the other children. The problem is, that not all the children
were named when the ledger was done. We have guessed that Paul, Louise,
and Gertie were born on the dates shown.
Jan 2006: Received an email from Sigvor Bjørkedal Øvregård in Norway.
"My mothers name is Margit Hjørdis Bjørkedal. She was born Margit
Hjørdis Taklo at Taklo, Nordfjordeid, and your ancestor Paul P. Taklo was

been looking for relatives that are related to Ole Omholt and his wife Helen.
I have a wonderful picture of the family that was taken in May of 1918. And
some of the Stories of them when they lived in Omholt, Montana."

Stories: "In August of 1910, Ole and Helen Omholt and their family of
seven children came from Wisconsin. Ole and son Henry came with cattle,
horses, and machinery by emigrant car on a freight train. Shortly afterwards
Mrs. Omholt and the rest of the children, Margaret, Oliver, Mabelle, Helen,
Archie and Molly came by regular passenger train. Harold was born on the
homestead after they got to Montana. They had torn down their two-story
house in Wisconsin and loaded it on a boxcar and shipped it to Montana.
Each piece of lumber was marked so that made it easier to rebuild it here on
their homestead. Mrs Omholt’s father, John Higher (Heyer), came with them
too. They filled on 160 acres each. Mr Heyer was elderly and nearly totally
bind. He had to use the out side privy on nice days and the older boys were
to go with him.

America in 1869 at the age of 2 So, I have been wondering if these two

Nov 2006: From Doris Bissell "Anyways, I don't know about this
connection Grandpa Martin I was told was born in Sweden and he born in
1864 I have the "United States Federal Census Record" with Martin listed
{Martin Jorgelson} beneath his name & that he was age 46 at the time of
this census & born in 1864 in Sweden & parents both born & raised in
Sweden & Martin's spouse was my Grandma Clara Amanda Taklo-
Torgelson they lived in Mpls Ward 7, Hennepin county, Minnesota.....the
year of his immigration was 1870 and Clara was age 26 at this time also."

record is: #219723."

Febr 2008: mail received from Doris Janke-Bissell. I finally got the death
certificates back from MNHS for Grandpa Martin. Grandpa Martin
Torgelson was born July 27, 1863 they originally had 1864 but crossed that
out and wrote July 27, 1863 above it. Grandpa was a Laborer for Mpls
Server Dept and died on June 7, 1917 at Haprwell Hospital in Minneapolis,
Mn from Chronic Pulminary Tuberculosis {this hospital was the City
Hospital}.....His address with Grandma was at 422-East 34th Street in Mpls,
Mn.....and he was buried June 11, 1917 at Crystal Lake Cemetery.

Theodore DeSautelle born in 1896 in Minnesota so this record states but his
death certificate states Montreal, Ca.
The other brothers to Theodore were: William DeSautelle born in 1898
would match to what Grandma Clara told us years ago That Theodore's one
brother William was blinded at age 3 accidently and that he was selling
Fuller Brush Products He visited our house a number of times too He was
beaten to death sometime in the early 1970s my mother told us kid! The
other brothers were Arthur born in 1903 & Louis Jr born in 1890. Step
Grandpa Theodore died May 17, 1947 from bronchiopnemonia & coronary
disease I think he died at home in their bed If I remember correctly? He was
buried May 22, 1947 at Crystal Lake Cemetery also.

Paul was born in Pennsylvania. He has no middle name.

In Norristown, Pennsylvania he started as a shoe shine boy, then as a
newspaper peddler. He went to barber school and became a barber.
At age 28 he moved to New York City and hired out as a yacht sailor. From
there he went to Miami, Florida and washed dishes in a car hop joint. (a fast
food place). In 1939 he moved to Chicago. The war was getting hot in
Europe. He tried to join the Navy, but they didn't like the looks of his feet.
He worked in a hamburger joint at Lincoln Park. Then he worked in a drug
store. Paul met a man that was real good to him and got him into an engineer
union. He worked for the Maryland Hotel, then the Sawyer Biscuit
Company. Paul met Stella and got married in 1946. He spent about 6 years
at the Covenant Club doing engineer work. After that he went to work for a
laundry called the Flat Iron Laundry. Along in here, Arthur and Dennis were
born in Chicago. Then Paul & Stella decided to relocate. They moved to
Everett, WA, where Stella was born, and her family still lived. Paul bought a
share of an Everett co-op. From there, about 1961, he got a job at the
Boeing Co. At Boeing he was a jack of all trades. He started at various jobs,
the paint booth, then finally plumbing. Around 1981, Stella started
developing Alzheimer's Disease. She died in September 1993. Paul took
care of her in their house in Everett.
He enjoyed watching wrestling on TV. He used to sing in the church choir
and he loved to listen to classical music. He liked to study Italian and
French.
In 1993 Paul & Stella moved to Auburn with his son when he got married.
Art, Kathy & Paul visited his son Dennis in Maui HI, 1994.
He lived with Art, Kathy, Sam and Anna LaPella until he passed away. He
loved to take pictures of the kids and to give them horse rides on his legs.
He would have tea parties with his grand daughter, Anna. He also let the
kids watch his TV, just until the wrestling came on.

I received an e-mail from George Danas asking if I could send you
guys some memories of the family. Paul was allways going into his
bedroom and coming out with some kind of power tool that Dennis
or I needed to work on our cars. Paul was the master of all crafts to
us teenagers a fountain of knowledge about all things to do with
vehicles.Since he worked the graveyard shift he was around in the
afternoons to advise us sometimes over one of his delicous salami
sandwiches. I also remember how proud Stella was when she passed
her G.E.D. she worked very hard on that as I remember. As for times
at church Stella was always "Stella Lapella Stella Lapella" to all of
us grade schoolers at Sunday school. I think she ran the program for
a few years and that flaming red hair was always on a mission it
seemed. Dennis and I shared a love for sports cars and racing we
went to many local races and also made 2 trips to California to see
the Long Beach Grand Prix. I also have not seen Dennis
since I believe 1991 And think about how he's doing a lot. I hope
this e-mail is of some use to you as I always enjoy thinking of the
time I spent with the Lapella's in my formative years. Ted
