Challenge Problem 2
Due Oct 5 (Exam day)
Given one statement, find the others and determine their truth value. If it is false,
give a counterexample.
1. Conditional: If you live in China, then you have a communist government.
Inverse: If someone lived in the Forbidden City, then they were a member
of the emperor’s family.
Contrapositive: If someone favored political reform and freedom of speech,
then they protested at Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
Converse: If you visit the Great Wall of China, you will see architecture that
is over 2,000 years old.
5. Find at least 4 different examples in newspapers and magazines of
advertisements that use conditionals or can be written as conditionals. (If
you do this, then this will happen.) Tell whether you believe they are true
and defend your opinion with possible counterexamples. Write the
converse of each statement and tell whether you think it is true or false.
