I Disconnect From You • Listen To My Voice • Rip • This Wreckage • Are Friends Electric? • M.E. • Down In The Park Overview One of the founding fathers of synth–pop, Gary Numan’s influence extends far beyond his lone American hit “Cars,” which still stands as one of the defining new wave singles. That seminal track helped usher in the synth–pop era on both sides of the Atlantic, especially in his native UK where he was a genuine pop star and consistent hitmaker during the early ‘80s. Even after new wave had petered out, Numan’s impact continued; his dark, paranoid vision, theatrically icy alien persona and clinical, robotic sound were echoed strongly in the work of many goth–rock and industrial artists to come. For his part, Numan just kept on recording; by the late ‘90s, he’d become a hip name to drop, prominent alt–rock bands covered his hits in concert and a goth–flavored brand of industrial dance looked to him as its mentor. Nowadays, Gary Numan’s influence is perhaps as far–reaching as that of the performers who initially inspired his own work. From Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins to Marilyn Manson, Beck, The Smashing Pumpkins, Prodigy and Trent Reznor, numerous contemporary artists have acknowledged Numan’s role in their musical evolution. Over the last few years, his songs have been sampled and/or covered by Marilyn Manson, Armand Van Helden, Damon Albarn, The Foo Fighters, Hole, Moloko, Beck, The Magnetic Fields, DJ Hell, Trevor Jackson (Playgroup) and Sugababes. Hybrid is the only “best of” collection that covers Numan’s entire career and has the advantage of being recorded by a group of the best producers around! Featuring tracks revised and revamped by Gary Numan in collaboration with Andy Gray, Curve, Flood and Alan Muldaur (amongst others), Hybrid is a vivid rejuvenation of Numan’s oeuvre. Press Quotes “Although it happened almost by stealth, Gary Numan’s transformation from electro–clown into respected, still–relevant pioneer is startling. It’s Numan’s overall sound that counts and, for the most part, that sound is edgy and genuinely exciting.. – The Guardian “Gary Numan…was dope. When we heard “Are Friends Electric,” it was like aliens had landed in the Bronx. More than Kraftwerk, Numan was an inspiration. Without him, there would be no electro.” – Afrika Bambaataa “Gary Numan’s richest, most powerful work in years…across a range of tempos, the relentlessly dark assault of the music is perfectly complemented by a bleak lyrical vision. This derives from varied combinations of grinding guitars, pounding beats, metallic noise, throbbing bass and uncharacteristically forceful vocals, all of which tend to explode into the choruses.” – PopMatters.com Selling Points • The only complete Gary Numan “best of” available • Features new versions of some of Numan’s most popular songs • “Cars” is currently being used in a Nissan television campaign • The first Numan remix album produced in conjunction with the artist • UK import available for the first time at a domestic price! • Key Markets: New York, Chicago, Washington DC, Atlanta, Minneapolis, St Paul, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and all major U.S. markets am Release Date: March 4th, 2003 Sparks Lil’ Beethoven CD: AFL 1 (Q) File Under: Alternative Rock Track Listing The Rhythm Thief • How Do I Get To Carnegie Hall • What Are All These Bands So Angry About? • I Married Myself • Ride ‘Em Cowboy • My Baby’s Taking Me Home • Your Call Is Very Important To Us Please Hold • Ugly Guys With Beautiful Girls • SubUrban Homeboy Overview With their career careening into its third decade, Sparks have truly earned their place in the pantheon of international pop acts as a pair of extraordinary, idiosyncratic innovators who consistently refuse to bow before commercial convention. Once called Halfnelson, the band’s quirky, tongue–in–cheek art–pop failed to find an audience until their manager successfully convinced them to change their name; after becoming Sparks, they nearly reached the Hot 100 with the single “Wonder Girl.” Sparks have been acknowledged for their influence on such diverse acts as Morrissey, Bjork, Cheap Trick, Erasure, The Ramones, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Depeche Mode and Dead Kennedys; worked with luminaries Muff Winwood, Mick Ronson and William Orbit; predicted the futures of synth–pop & electronica; and were among the first artists to assert their autonomy by self–producing their albums and embracing new digital technologies. Now, the 2002 release of Lil’ Beethoven marks the band’s 19th sonic offering, a stunning & genre–defying nine–track opus that will, again, raise the bar between musical commerce and art. Press Quotes “Lil' Beethoven, Sparks’ 19th album...sounds, quite frankly, like nothing else at all. The brothers have written pop songs about banal things – being put on hold, why ugly guys get beautiful girls – and turned them into Wagnerian, hysterical epics that elevate their subjects into something way beyond their actual importance. Strings and choruses take the place of guitars, drums and all the other elements that usually give rock music its power.” – The Guardian “Like Gilbert & Sullivan on Quaaludes!” – Muzik “Unfortunately, Sparks never enjoyed more than a small, though devoted, cult following. But it certainly wasn’t for a lack of effective hooks and clever, insanely funny lyrics. Often willing to experiment, the group embraces everything from hard rock to Euro–disco…this is an impressive picture of a wrongly neglected band.” – All Music Guide Selling Points • Sparks has a huge cult following; their recent London show sold out almost instantly • Features all–new original material that keeps with the band’s oft–corrupted art of musical overkill • UK import available for the first time at a domestic price! • Key Markets: Beverly Hills (Hometown). Also: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Washington DC and all major U.S. markets Release Date: March 4th, 2003 an Track Listing DISC ONE: Lonely Love • Couldn’t Love You More • Sweet Little Mystery • Head & Heart • Could’ve Been Me • Over The Hill • Fine Lines • May You Never • One World • Ways To Cry • Angeline • Man In The Station • Solid Air • Never Let Me Go DISC TWO: I Don’t Wanna Know • Bless The Weather • Pascanel • Rock Salt & Nails • Just Now • Johnny Too Bad • Sapphire • Fisherman’s Dream • Big Muff • Easy Blues • Dealer • John Wayne Overview “Whether with his characteristic backslap acoustic guitar playing, his effects–driven experimental journeys or his catalog of excellent songs, John Martyn remains an important and influential figure in both British folk and rock.” – All Music Guide Scottish born singer–songwriter/guitarist John Martyn began his innovative, expansive career at the age of 17 with a style influenced by the traditional music of his homeland, the eclectic folk of Davey Graham and the American blues of artists Robert Johnson and Skip James. With the aid of his mentor, traditional singer Hamish Imlach, Martyn began to make a name for himself and eventually moved to London, where he became a fixture at Cousins, the center for the local folk scene that spawned the likes of Bert Jansch, Ralph McTell and Al Stewart. As the years passed, Martyn continued to expand on his unique blend of folk music, drawing on blues, rock and jazz as well as music from the Middle East, South America and Jamaica. His voice continued to transform with each album while his playing became more aggressive, but without losing its gentler side. Classics is a definitive “best of” that features all the songs Martyn was renowned for and showcases his rich talent that, to this day, still remains underrated, although widely respected. This excellent compilation tries to redress the balance! John Martyn Classics 2XCD: AFL 31 (2F) File Under: Folk Selling Points • The most comprehensive John Martyn “best of” available • Martyn still enjoys writing and recording for Independiente Records • UK import available for the first time at a domestic price! • Key Markets: Beverly Hills (Hometown). Also: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Washington DC and all major markets Track Listing Scarred • Misery • You Ruined Everything • Unknown • You Don’t Mean That Much • One Of Us • Blasphemy • Fear Me • Spray • Problem Overview “Sulpher are Britain’s reviving answer to the flagging industrial metal scene…with merging crunchy guitars, clean vocals and some EBM influence, they definitely outstrip any similar bands around at the moment.” – Camden Review Mixing heavy elements of Fear Factory with a touch of Stabbing Westward bass and a penchant Sulpher for quick electronic bursts, Sulpher are here to save industrial rock. Frontman Rob Holliday Spray towers through a cloud of smoke, belting out adrenaline–fuelled riffs and looking every bit the CD: AFL MEC 3 (Q) cyber–psycho, while the rest of the band seize the stage and claim it as their own. Sulpher are the File Under: Industrial UK’s last chance at industrial salvation. Their heavy, textured style is based around innovative percussion loops, aggressive riffs, ambient dynamics and burning, chemical choruses. Featuring assorted members of Curve and The Creatures, Sulpher utilize past experiences to put on a performance that puts established bands in the shade. A startling combination of Nine Inch Nails’ aggression, Curve’s idiosyncrasies and Stabbing Westward’s ability to create breathtaking textures makes Sulpher the most exciting band of the moment! Now, the band presents their stunning debut, which will surely force you to re–evaluate the UK’s contribution to alternative music. Selling Points • “Fear Me” was used in recent Winter Olympic coverage by NBC • Sulpher leads the UK’s industrial rock scene • Features member of Curve and The Creatures • Rob Holliday will tour with Nine Inch Nails in 2003 • Sulpher have worked with The Mission and Curve • UK import available for the first time at a domestic price! • Key Markets: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Washington DC and all major U.S. markets ao Release Date: March 4th, 2003 Songs: Ohia The Magnolia Electric Co. File Under: Alternative Rock CD: SEC 76 (O) LP: SEC 76 (O) Featured Artists Jason Molina, Mike Brenner, Jeff Panall, Rob Sullivan, Dan Sullivan, Dan Macadam, Jennie Benford, Jim Grabowski, Lawrence Peters, Scout Niblett, Mike Brenner Track Listing Farewell Transmission • I’ve Been Riding With The Ghost • Just Be Simple • Almost Was Good Enough • The Old Black Hen • Peoria Lunch Box Blues • John Henry Split My Heart • Hold On Magnolia Overview With the wailing lap steel of album opener “Farewell Transmission,” Jason Molina & Co. usher in a new day, playing the sort of rock that your cool uncle rolled to back in the ‘70s. Landing somewhere on the sonic radar between Bob Dylan’s Desire and Bob Seger’s Beautiful Loser (though thematically in line with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man), The Magnolia Electric Co. lies at the crossroads of working class rock, white soul, swamp rock and outlaw country. While Songs: Ohia’s last record, Didn’t It Rain, was a meditation on roots and stability, The Magnolia Electric Co. finds itself toiling with the wages of change. This thematic preoccupation with change manifests itself in the rotating cast of lead vocalists. While the entire album boasts a doo–wop–like line–up, six of the eight songs have Molina in the tall stool with the ever–enchanting Jennie Benford (Jim & Jennie, The Pinetops) as primary back–up vocalist. But on two songs, new Songs: Ohia players step up to take on lead vocal duties, singing Molina–penned songs. Lawrence Peters with his fantastic Merle Haggard–esque country croon, takes the lead on “The Old Black Hen” while Scout Niblett appears from the nether world of the Ohia wardrobe with feathers in her hair to cast her spell on the Ohia rig barreling through “Peoria Lunch Box Blues.” Recorded live by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago and with the same core back–up band that played on the Mi Sei Apparaso Come Un Fantasma live album, this is the album that will start to change the Songs: Ohia fan demographic. We’ll see a radical shift from the dominant bedroom universe of the world’s lonely, sensitive, overqualified young white dudes and find refuge in the masses when we’re embraced by the world’s truck drivers, sorority chicks and hockey players. Indeed, this is the first Songs: Ohia record with more than one song that could be played at a strip joint or monster truck show. Amid the mid–tempo slow jams, there lie some of the most upbeat material that Songs: Ohia has recorded to date. Press Quotes “Contains enough stunned wonder and insular grit to entrance the more hidden nooks of your unconscious for months.” – Resonance “[Songs: Ohia’s] albums are mesmeric in their stately extrapolation of gloom.” – Mojo Selling Points • Songs: Ohia has a rabid fan base that is constantly growing. Each of the last three full–lengths has sold more than 15,000 copies. This is easily Songs: Ohia’s most commercial album to date • A full U.S. and European tour will follow this release • Jason Molina comes from the same humble, working class, trailer park landscape that reared some of the great songwriters: George Jones, Thin Lizzy, Townes Van Zandt and Eminem • Full press promotion by Nasty Little Man • Radio promotion & advertising by Secretly Canadian • Key Markets: Chicago (Hometown). Also: Baltimore, Washington DC, Atlanta, New York City, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Boston Also Available Songs: Ohia Ghost Tropic CD: SEC 40 (O) LP: SEC 40 (N) Songs: Ohia Didn’t It Rain CD: SEC 65 (O) LP: SEC 65 (N) Release Date: March 4th, 2003 ap NAIL Welcomes New Exclusive Label Music Maniac To The Family! Dead Moon Dead Moon Night LP: MMN 22 (N) File Under: Alternative Rock Dead Moon Livevil File Under: Alternative Rock 2XCD: MMN 38 (2I) 2XLP: MMN 38 (2E) Track Listing Dead Moon Night • Dead In The Saddle • Time Has Come Today • Echoes To You • 54–40 Or Fight • I Hate The Blues • Graveyard • My Escape • I’m Wise • Black September • I Tried • Hey Joe Track Listing Dead Moon Night • Graveyard • Remember Me • Parchment Farm • Time Has Come Today • Hey Joe • Signed DC • Not The Only One • Don’t Burn The Fires • Dead In The Saddle • Can’t Help Falling In Love • 54–40 Or Fight • I’m Wise • You Must Be A Witch • Animal • Communication Breakdown • D.O.A. • Dagger Moon • Out On The Wire • Johnny’s Got A Gun • Folsom Prison • I’m On My Own • A Miss Of You • Black September • Echoes To You • Running Scared • Walking On My Grave • Graveyard Overview We really could write a book here. Fred Cole started his rock ‘n roll career in 1964 as Deep Soul Cole and continued through the years with The Weeds & The Lollipop Shoppe (punk), Zipper (hard rock), The Western Front (country), The Rats (hardcore punk) and King Bee, Desperate Edge & The Torpedos (rock ’n roll). During this time, Cole played all the big clubs on the West Coast, supporting Moby Grape, The Doors, The Seeds, Janis Joplin & Big Brother, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane and more. All the adventures, experiences, frustrations, anger and disillusionment Cole & Co. experienced throughout all those years inspired them to form Dead Moon, which turned out to be the best contemporary rock ‘n roll band in the world. Don’t you dare miss them – they just might change your life! Overview Livevil was the first album to appear simultaneously as an LP and CD, both with entirely different cover artwork. It was recorded live at The Longhorn in Stuttgart, with Edwin Heath behind the mixing desk. The whole thing gives the listener the exact atmosphere of a Dead Moon gig, including Fred Cole’s guitar being out of tune on “Remember Me,” Andrew Loomis trying to catch up with what Cole is doing on “Dagger Moon,” Toody Cole apologizing for having “fucked up big time” on “Johnny’s Got A Gun” and the whole session ending “drunker than a skunk” but with absolutely 100% pure rock ‘n roll brilliance! Track Listing Poor Born • Cast Will Change • Too Far Gone • Day After Day • Two Fell Away • Killing Me • It’s OK • Back To Back • The Dead Line • Times Are A Changing • Unknown Passage Dead Moon 13 Off My Hook LP: MMN 32 (N) File Under: Alternative Rock Dead Moon Overview The release of Crack In The System was simultaneous with the re–release of the File Under: Alternative Rock legendary Zipper, as more and more people became interested in Cole’s musical legacy. Like the previous albums, 1995’s Crack In The System CD: MMN 51 (M) spread the word that Dead Moon was one of the most exciting bands around, if not the most exciting band ever. In 1996, PIC LP: MMN 51 (M) the fact that Dead Moon was still on the rise was illustrated by their appearance in Hype, a documentary film about CLOCK LP: MMN 510 (T) Seattle’s music scene and the rise & fall of grunge culture. Although in no way a typical grunge band, Dead Moon were considered hip, interesting and influential enough to share their views! Crack In The System Track Listing Kicked Out, Kicked In • D.O.A. • War Baby • I’m Out Nine • Street Of Despair • Too Many People • Milk Cow Blues • Revenge • Social Contender • Running Scared • Unknown Passage • We Won’t Change • Walking On My Grave • Not The Only One • Claim To Fame Overview In the same year that Dead Moon Night was released, and in the same way, Music Maniac quickly released a second compilation. Of the fifteen songs on Thirteen Off My Hook, seven were previously unreleased (including five songs with The Rats’ Louis Samora). Anyone raising eyebrows over this Music Maniac release policy should listen to these (otherwise “lost”) songs first! aq Release Date: March 4th, 2003 Dead Moon Strange Pray Tell File Under: Alternative Rock CD: MMN 48 (M) LP: MMN 48 (N) Dead Moon Nervous Sooner Changes File Under: Alternative Rock CD: MMN 66 (M) LP: MMN 66 (N) Overview Dead Moon usually records in Cole’s 8–track studio; though deaf in one ear, he masters each disc on the same 1954 Presto–88 disc cutter that inscribed the Kingsmen’s definitive “Louie, Louie.” His songwriting spans punk and garage traditions, though the band’s choice of covers, like “Hey Joe,” underscores his ‘60s roots. Consistent throughout the oeuvre is a blunt, working–class pragmatism. Strange Pray Tell is Dead Moon’s strongest, most frenzied release and includes the stunning “Fire In The Western World.” Overview The considerable recorded output of this band isn’t exactly interchangeable, but it all sounds very much like Dead Moon; Cole’s high, quavering vocals are remarkably expressive. The fidelity is modest and the group’s grasp of tuning nuances sporadic, but the songs bash and pop with the enthusiasm of a first–year driver on the figure–eight circuit. It sounds like vintage punk rock, or, when there are too many jugs of wine in the room, the Yardbirds stealing new songs. Nervous Sooner Changes is a comparatively restrained song cycle on the theme of infidelity – this from a couple who by then had been married three decades and already had three grandchildren! Dead Moon Hard Wired In Ljubijana File Under: Alternative Rock 2XCD: MMN 68 (2J) 2XLP: MMN 67 (2E) Dead Moon Destination X LP: MMN 70 (N) File Under: Alternative Rock Overview The ‘97 release Hard Wired In Ljubljana is another live double album – and a very cool one, too. None of the Livevil songs were given a repeat performance and for the first time the band features a fourth musician: Sjef Huurdeman (of Dutch band Sgeurvreters) on blues harp. Another novelty is the limited edition CD–ROM version of this album. Although Toody Cole said “we’re not really computer friendly,” the band has clearly given their full support to the making of this CD–ROM, which includes everything you always wanted to know about Dead Moon – unreleased live footage, interviews, documentary and their story so far... Overview After the Ljubljana album, things were a bit quiet for a while – or at least that’s the impression one might’ve received. Yeah, Dead Moon toured Europe, but we had to wait two full years for a new album. The result was definitely worth the wait; Destination X is another set of soon–to–be classic Dead Moon songs. The fan base that Dead Moon has built up over all these years just keeps growing and growing; meanwhile, there are no signs that the band will ever slow down! And so, this story will surely continue… Dead Moon Stranded In The Mystery Zone CD: MMN 42 (M) File Under: Alternative Rock Zipper Zipper File Under: Alternative Rock CD: MMN 66017 (M) LP: MMN 66017 (N) Overview Overview Issued in 1974 on Fred Cole’s own label, Whizeagle Records, out of Clackamas, Oregon, this is a loud, raw hard rock album. Cole had earlier been in The Lollipop Shoppe & The Weeds and is currently in Dead Moon. Of the other members, Jim Roos became a computer programmer and plays in many different, successful Northwest bands. Lorry Erck is a skilled welder who continues to play music and Greg Shadoan also works as a computer engineer who currently plays with The Tom Feeny Band. This is a collector’s item – the original disc now sells for exorbitant amounts of money! The studio album Stranded In The Mystery Zone (1991) is another great homemade record, containing fabulous songs like “Clouds Of Dawn” (originally written for Zipper but never released) and the anthemic “Spectacle.” On the sleeve of the LP version, you’ll find one of the most extensive “thank you” lists ever –Dead Moon wants to thank everyone and they sure as hell try! The CD version, released on Music Maniac, doesn’t have this – but unlike the LP, its liner notes include all of the lyrics. Dubbed The Special Goodness, Wilson took the name from a mantra he coined while with Weezer, expressing the vibe he strove for while playing. Wilson, an emotive musician who had sung backup on a few Weezer tracks, headed into the studio to sing and play guitars, keys and percussion on his introspective, power pop tunes. In the fall of 1999, the Buffalo native began performing with boyhood friend Pat Finn, Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh, roadie/contributor Karl Koch, and drummer Lee Loretta.” – Ron DePasquale, All Music Guide The Special Goodness story is one that, until now, has spent too much time on Pat Wilson’s back burner. It wasn’t until Wilson was on a break (following the recording of Weezer’s Green Album) that he turned his attention back to The Special Goodness. During rehearsal for a tour supporting The Green Album, Wilson ran into his old pal Atom Willard, who had recently left his band, Rocket From The Crypt. While the two swapped some hot–rodding fish tales, the seeds for what would become The Special Goodness were sown. Land Air Sea has a unique sound, blending influences from The Smiths, The Cure, Black Sabbath, The Jesus Lizard and Nirvana – and, of course, there are undeniable ties to both Weezer and Rocket From The Crypt. With catchy harmonies and a crushing rhythm section, The Special Goodness offers up a new chapter from the book of rock ‘n roll! Like The Ex, Unwound, Fugazi or Savage Republic, their music is a response to things bigger than you or I; they aim their lyrics unflinchingly towards the mess of excess, destruction and the peoples’ history of inhumanity. In a nation with an increasingly dire political situation (yet a frustrating deluge of vocalists who only care to sing about themselves), it’s time for music to stand for something again, and The Intima’s hearts and minds are in exactly the right place. Based out of both Portland and Olympia, The Intima play passionate, artful, epic gypsy punk with an emergent dance–beat feel, building grave and stunning melodies beneath their jutting, staccato vocals. The melodies are most striking; a furious, vaguely Eastern European quality haunts them, recalling the folk music of an insurgent populace. As incredible live as they are on record, The Intima has tons of talent to back up their convictions. Because of that, they are rare. Honestly, when was the last time you heard a band with such purpose simultaneously playing such unique and gorgeous music? The Reagan years, maybe? The Intima have been together for about four years, releasing several EPs and comps while working on other projects. Band member Nora Danielson has played guest violin on what seems like every album ever recorded in Olympia, from Mirah’s Advisory Committee to The Mountain Goats’ Devil In The Shortwave. Now, Slowdance releases the eloquently titled Peril & Panic. It not only signifies The Intima’s continued relevance as a band, but also comes at a time when the future of the world is more precarious than ever. The Intima screams what others are afraid to whisper. Press Quotes “Portland/Olympia’s The Intima are the type of band that you find through a stroke of luck – and once you do, you want to tell everyone you can about how great they are. Sure, it was produced by Tucker Martine and features appearances from names like Amy Denio and Bill Frisell, but it's Veirs' songwriting and voice (which sort of manages to bridge the gap between Gillian Welch and Eleni Mandell) that carry the affair. Original and affecting, it's music that's built for the long haul." - Barbara Mitchell, The Stranger Laura Veirs Troubled By Fire CD: BLA AKA 2 (P) File Under: Alt Country With one foot in traditional balladry and another in a swirling sea of indie, punk, country and jazz, Laura Veirs has found an oddly compelling stance in the landscape of Americana and alt–country. Born in Colorado, Veirs moved to Seattle in 1997 by way of rural Minnesota. Since then, she’s charted a course through the Northwest’s bars, festivals and living rooms, picking up a sizable and diverse following that includes indie kids, folk freaks, old–time politicos and most everyone in between. Whether she’s solo or with her band of oddball compatriots, The Tortured Souls (featuring Tucker Martine, Steve Moore and Karl Blau), she’s a spectacle to see live and possesses one of most stunning voices in the alt– country music scene. You might have seen him at Glastonbury playing guitar with Pulp or Longpigs, caught him in the fledgling Sheffield bands Treebound Story or The Lovebirds, or perhaps heard him playing guitar on All Saints’ version of “Under The Bridge” – whatever it was, once you hear the classic songs of Richard Hawley, you are bound to be swept away, for they dip into the same waters of timeless melancholy as The Everly Brothers and Scott Walker. Hawley’s songs are those of a man more at home in a greasy spoon than an uptown hotel; they are songs from the pub and, like Morrissey’s, revolve around families falling apart and love found and lost. They are the type of songs that Wurlitzer made jukeboxes for. Simultaneously starting his studio and live career at the onset of his teenage years, Hawley embarked on his first European tour at 14, playing in his uncle’s band. He has since gone on to work with Robbie Williams, Nellee Hooper, Finlay Quaye and Perry Farrell, to name a few. Using voice and guitar, he’s crafted a work of forlorn balladry and fragile–hearted beauty.” – Mojo Magazine In the summer of 2002, Rivulets (aka minimalist singer–songwriter Nathan Amundson) relocated to Duluth, MN to record this album, engineered by his friend Alan Sparhawk (Low) in an old cathedral–turned–studio called the Sacred Heart Music Centre. In the process, Rivulets invited several other friends – namely Jessica Bailiff, Jon Derosa (Aarktica), Marc Gartman, Seth Knappen (Ex–Darling), Brian John Mitchell (Remora), Aaron Molina (if thousands) and Mimi Parker (Low) – to contribute. Rivulets set the mood for these recordings against the naturally dark acoustics of the cathedral, recording the bulk of the album alone with Sparhawk a few days before the guests arrived. The guest musicians then added their own sonic colorizations to his spare guitar & voice compositions, with Amundson’s lonesome, haunting songs at the forefront and the cathedral itself acting as a constant resonator for every note. This is a stunning collection of exclusive songs recorded at Portland’s famous Type Foundry studio with a like–minded bonus track that belies the original title, bringing the song count up to six. This is not a b–side or rarities affair. For those unfamiliar with Edwards, he played in various bands in Los Angeles before forming 16 Horsepower with Pascal Humbert and Jean–Yves Tola in 1992. They signed to A&M Records in ’95, released one EP & two full–length albums and toured the globe extensively to support their releases. After one of these tours, 16 Horsepower decided to take a rest in order to devote more time to other things. Tola now raises horses with his wife, Humbert is building a house – but Edwards had a million ideas that needed a musical outlet. Thus, he has turned his attention to Woven Hand, named after several images of hands being held together – for prayer, to help another person, or as a display of love. Woven Hand will sound like a sparse version of 16HP because Edwards wrote the material with the band in mind. He plays all the instruments on the record and, when performing live, will be accompanied only by his friend Daniel McMahon on pump organ, guitar and mandolin. Although Woven Hand’s debut album was released in Europe in early 2002, American and Canadian fans had to wait to get their hands on it. Recently, Woven Hand took shelter “neath a familyre tree” and we wait no longer! Press Quotes "It seemed as though Edward's solo record, coming under the Woven Hand moniker, would be the swan song, the last material intended for the great southern gothic, apocalypse–tinged 16 Horsepower. As for Woven Hand, it's already generating 16 Horsepower–like comments which, while understandable, completely trivialize the power this record carries on it's own terms. Edwards is one of the most distinctive vocalists around." – Opus Zine "News of the possible demise of Denver goth-folk pioneers 16 Horsepower last year caused ripples of panic among their loyal fanbase. Heavy with a sack of songs ready for the next 16HP album, leader David Eugene Edwards instead buried himself in the studio and used them on this solo scheme, Woven Hand...whose sparseness magnifies Edwards unsettling up-close-and-personal approach. Layers of guitar, banjo, mandolin and centuries-old droning instruments weave a rich musical cloth that both flaps jauntily on the Tom Petty–influenced 'Glass Eye' and then drags in the bloodstained dirt for a near-suicidal version of Bill Withers' 'Aint No Sunshine.'" – Americana-UK.com “I hate to gush, but gush I must. This is my record of the year. It doesn’t matter what happens for the rest of the year. Kurt Cobain could come back from the grave and record a new Nirvana record. Laddio Bollocko could get back together. It doesn’t matter. This is it. It’s magical, dark, mysterious, sinister, gorgeous and moves me like very few records do.” – Aquarius Records Selling Points • Features David Eugene Edwards, singer/songwriter for 16 Horsepower • The Glitterhouse release of Woven Hand has already sold over 17,000 copies in Europe • Woven Hand will tour North America extensively to support this release • Fanatic Promotion will service radio and press • Key Markets: Denver (Hometown). Taking a more conscious approach to studio recording, The Barnyard Playboys have created another cow–punk classic. 2000’s trashy Dumbass On A Rampage spawned a national tour for these Portland ex–patriots – and MTV’s Undergrads saw fit to include “Flat Butts And Beer Guts in one episode’s soundtrack! Since their alcohol–fueled inception in January 1996, The Barnyard Playboys have toured the nation extensively. Blending the sounds of traditional country music with raw punk rock, The Barnyard Playboys are a unique band with a unique sound. Singer/songwriter John Lyons combines the influences of country greats George Jones, Buck Owens and Johnny Cash with his own rock n’ roll background to deliver a long repertoire of hillbilly truck–driving songs reeking of road–stop fervor. Discontent with the intellectual segregation that occurs in rap music today, this duo is out to convince the heads to take the music a little less seriously and just enjoy listening again. Equally unafraid to poke fun at themselves and to tackle issues that other artists avoid, they make rap music that is grounded in hip hop’s traditional street sensibilities. Onry Ozzborn, the enigmatic cult figure with the CMJ chart–smashing solo debut Alone, joins Oldominion idea man and low–brow miscreant Barfly to form this “one man band.” The group name, Norman, comes from the character Ozzborn and Barfly have cast for themselves on Polarity, their loosely conceptual debut album. Although offbeat and comical, Barfly and Ozzborn are also plenty dark and emotional, without ever really removing the tongue from their collective cheek. Polarity enlists the slick production of resident Oldominion beatsmiths Pale Soul & Smoke and features cuts by Portland’s DJ Tremor as well as vocal guest work from some of the Northwest’s best–kept secrets: Snafu, Toni Hill, Sulfur, Sinistapushaman.com and Pale Soul. Press Quotes “Mellow–toned delivery into the darkness of the human psyche. Beats here are consistently tight and eerie, with changing tempos that help the flow of things and have you dissecting lyrics of paranoid proportions.” – J.C. Carnahan, Impact Press "...A powerful debut that moves slowly, but gradually insinuates itself in your brain with a combination of murky, minor-key grooves and hyperactive rhyming. Chosen themes are sometimes unusual, but that's kind of refreshing in a musical world that is generally too thematically predictable. Recommended to all adventurous hip-hop fans." – All Music Guide Selling Points • Norman performed at the 2002 Winter Olympics with Erykah Badu, Common, Talib Kweli and The Roots • Oldominion has toured and/or performed with Kool Keith, Black Eyed Peas, Princess Superstar, Wu–Tang Clan, Mos Def, Dilated Peoples, Typical Cats, Foreign Legion and Josh Martinez • Two singles will be serviced to over 450 college and mix show DJs • S.P.E.C.T.R.E. With each album, he contributes a new chapter to an ever–fruitful body of work. His latest offering, Where Shall You Take Me?, is his fifth full–length – a beautiful collection of ten Raymond Carver–esque vignettes of terror and bliss in Middle America. Two decades after Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, Jurado puts the darker, more complicated side of the heartland back on the map with his tales of young love (requited or not), innocent fun and gothic bloodshed. Mostly acoustic, with sparse band arrangements – the notable exception being the live favorite “Texas To Ohio” – Jurado has a songwriting talent that turns back the hands of the clock and places the listener in a timeless place. Often compared to Gillian Welch, Richard Buckner and Lucinda Williams, Jurado’s tunes sound as if they’ve been floating around for ages, passed down from generation to generation. On his first two albums, Waters Ave S and Rehearsals For Departure, the Seattle resident established himself as an important contemporary artist whose recordings reflected a keen sense of personality and a subdued pop sensibility akin to Matthew Sweet or Richard Davies. These albums also illustrated his talent as a singer/songwriter in the same league as Ron Sexsmith or the late, great Phil Ochs. With his third album, the forward–looking Ghost Of David, Jurado clearly positioned himself at the forefront of his peers in terms of willingness to experiment with the pop songwriter formula. A rough–hewn collage that combined sparse sing–song tunes with moody noise pieces, Ghost Of David was a loosely constructed, hand–wrought zine of an album – a unique and daring constellation work in an otherwise well–traversed sky. His follow–up, Gathered In Song, is the rock record that long–time fans waited for – those who knew Jurado from his early days, when he played in rock outfit Coolidge with a young pre–Pedro The Lion David Bazan. Press Quotes “First and foremost, as admirers of his earlier oeuvre will attest, Damien Jurado is a master of melancholy character sketches and confessionals, communicated via wracked vocal performances. A troubled troubadour, he is the Pacific Northwest’s modern–day answer to Nick Drake and Phil Ochs.” – Kurt B. Reighley, Pulse “If Damien Jurado’s influences are in all the right places, so are his hooks…he’s capable of writing phenomenal songs.” – John Luersson, Rolling Stone Selling Points • Each of Damien Jurado’s four previous albums ( all released by Sub Pop) sold more than its predecessor, with the last album selling in excess of 10,000 copies. He has had constant retail exposure since his last full–length in the form of a four–song 12” on Burnt Toast Vinyl and a 7” on Secretly Canadian • High profile tours with Pedro The Lion, Songs: Ohia and Julie Doiron have garnered Jurado a devoted fan base. Featuring former members of Toronto garage rock acts The Deadly Snakes and Killer Elite, the band was formed by longtime friends Josh Reichmann and Yuri Didrichsons in early 2001. The current line–up of the band was solidified earlier this year with the additions of bassist James Sayce (ex–Deadly Snakes) and drummer Marco Moniz (ex–Killer Elite). Since their additions, the band has become an inspired, full–out rock threat, causing local Toronto press to sit up and take notice! In early December 2002, the band entered Toronto’s Chemical Sound studio to record their debut full–length. The band’s musical direction takes influence from many different sources, including ‘60s British mod, NYC proto–punk, reggae and new wave. Some Toronto media have already described them as a post–punk Rolling Stones! Press Quotes "If there's a band that can help define the sound of Toronto, it's Tangiers. Where Canada is oft considered the no–man's land between the U.S. and Europe, Tangiers inverts that line of thinking by reasserting Toronto as the apex to the New York/London dialectic, with a sound that draws equally from '60s Brit–mod, CBGB proto–punk and Mick Jagger's Studio 54 phase. [They have also] absorbed reggae's key principles: jagged guitar riffs, repetitive rhythms (however accelerated they are) and vocals that, if not always decipherable – with Reichmann convulsing like Richard Hell getting shock treatment – certainly get the feeling across. And though their music may be better suited to speedfreaks than potheads, Tangiers ultimately choose positivity over nihilism." – Eye Weekly Selling Points • Tangiers are the hottest new band in Toronto • Radio and press serviced by Team Clermont • For fans of The White Stripes and The Rolling Stones • Ads will run in Devil In The Woods, The Big Takeover, Vice, Swingset, Magnet, Exclaim and Chart • Banner ads will run on key punk, garage and indie websites • Key Markets: Toronto (Hometown). Wehowsky is one of the most respected electronic composers of the last two decades. Combining great sensitivity and attention to detail with boundless energy, Gustafsson works regularly with the upper echelon of European and American improvisers, including bassist Barry Guy, percussionist Paul Lovens and pianist Marilyn Crispell. The Education of Lars Jerry features Gustafsson on tenor & baritone saxophone, French flageolet and “fluteophone” (his own contraption combining alto sax mouthpiece & flute). When they unleashed their eponymous debut album in 1995, critics practically exhausted their thesauruses heaping praise upon the band. By the time they released their sophomore album, White Magic For Lovers, the whole world was on board, with rave reviews from publications as diverse as Marie Claire, The Times and Select. The band also scored a Top 20 hit single in the UK with the Pinochet–bashing “El President,” featuring guest vocals by Thom Yorke of Radiohead! A double disc set, Songs For The Jet Set is Drugstore’s newest effort, an uptempo blast of piano, guitar and cello, all topped off with Monteiro’s deliriously sexy vocals. The first single, “I Wanna Love You Like A Man” is a seductive tango backed by the gorgeous B side “Baby Don’t Hurt Yourself,” featuring Lambchop’s Paul J. Niehaus. Disc 2, Collector Number One, is a “superb collection of home–demos, previously unreleased material and b–sides” (Amazon.co.uk). The original demo of “El President” that was sent to Thom Yorke appears here, along with a couple of new songs. This is Drugstore doing what they do best: producing intimate, cheeky love–bites for all your urban survival needs. Press Quotes “Somewhere between Morrissey’s Vauxhall And I and The Velvet Underground, songs chime seductively, stalk purposefully and, occasionally, swoon like a less camp, semi–acoustic Suede. What’s more, Isabel Monteiro is as charismatic as ever. Blessed with a rich, nicotine purr, she’s a party girl with a heart.” – NME “Britpop lives! Drugstore easily outpaces some of the more hyped UK exports of recent times. Brazilian native Isabel Monteiro has a strong, sweet voice, vaguely reminiscent of Cery Matthews from Catatonia, which clearly differentiates Drugstore from the predominant boyrock of Britpop…like Radiohead, they create subtle, layered music that artfully juxtaposes a wall of sound with moments of almost total silence.” – PopMatters.com Selling Points cm Release Date: March 18th, 2003 THE FIRST TIME • Songs For The Jet Set and Collector Number One were released as two separate albums in the UK; the U.S. release is a double CD at a budget price • Drugstore has toured extensively with Smashing Pumpkins, The Lemonheads, Echobelly, The Tindersticks and Radiohead • Full college radio service to over 300 stations by AAM, with a high chart position expected • Full publicity campaign by The First Time, with service to over 200 journalists and editors • Lifestyle placement program by The First Time with service to Urban Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch and more • Ads will run in The Big Takeover, Stop Smiling and Magnet • Key Markets: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Seattle, Portland, Washington DC, Boston, Toronto, Vancouver, Atlanta, Minneapolis and St Paul Track Listing mg/sec • California • Astray Holiday • Damsels Getaway • Countdown • Exhausted • Midway • Embers • Broken Down Muse • .45 Carousel • Tune In Tokyo • Defy Your Radio • Defy Your Radio (Radio Edit) Overview “Locked in on the legacy of Sloan and Ride, just as much as that of The Beatles, The Junior Panthers deliver a fine mix of shimmering guitar, airy vocals and rock crunch.” – John O’Neil, San Francisco Bay Guardian The Junior Panthers create a guitar–driven wall of sound with raucous riffs and subversive lyrics. The San Francisco band has its roots in shoegaze punk & power pop and can hang with the best of them. Their self–titled debut combines original hooks with influences of beachy California pop, Stones–influenced rock, bossa nova and hints of Bacharach, Jellyfish and Creation Records bands such as Ride, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus & Mary Chain and Primal Scream. However, The Junior Panthers like to shake it up with their own style of dirty vintage guitar licks, driving rhythms and melodic vocal stylings. The Junior Panthers have toured extensively and shared the stage with The Pattern, The Soledad Brothers, Mates Of State, The Stratford 4, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Call & Response. The group ignores the “verse–chorus–repeat” formula of more conventional songwriting, creating songs that are fluid, dynamic and angular. What we’re talking about here is a lot of tension and release, shifting time that manages to avoid mathematic coldness and thick chords, but also a melodic sensibility that ultimately leaves each song unique. After some initial four–track fun, the band recorded six songs of “booksmart hardcore” for both a CD and seven–inch on Magnolia Records. The band quickly gained attention, catching audiences by surprise and dropping a few jaws with their live show – a combination of intense precision and passion in equal parts. These live performances led the band to share the bill and hold their own with the likes of U.S. Maple, Mule, Cop Shoot Cop, Today Is The Day, Steel Pole Bathtub, Branch Manager and Glazed Baby. They eventually landed a movie soundtrack credit in Sleepover, which also featured music by Don Caballero, Helmet and Jeff Buckley. End The Measured Mile reflects a strong infusion of melody and warmth coupled with a rounding–off of the attack that colored Philo Beddow’s first releases. While these newer, more tuneful songs still capture a taste for the slightly–disjointed–but–oddly–cohesive, they are more introspective and reflect an economy of style from a maturing band. The best Japanese folk/techno album of the year.” – Daniel Chamberlin, Urb In a white room with white curtains, Ogurusu Norihide patiently, steadily works on his distinctive techno–folk hybrid. Modern is part of the burgeoning “laptop folk” scene alongside fellow Carparkers Greg Davis and Takagi Masakatsu. But, to limit his music to this tag would do Norihide a great injustice. His music follows its own path, informed as much by contemporary Japanese culture as by the ancient religious and cultural institutions of the Shinto faith – for Ogurusu Norihide is a certified Shinto priest. Having completed his studies in Tokyo last year, Norihide has returned to his hometown of Kyoto to concentrate fully on music. Kyoto, where centuries–old temples and gardens sit side by side with the offerings of modern Japan, complements the music of Modern well. The sounds of religious rites (hand claps, bells) rub up against digitally–produced rhythms which are integrated with acoustic guitar and piano. Instantly both familiar and totally abstract, Modern is informed by many musicians but sounds like none of them. Like all great artists, Ogurusu Norihide completely reshuffles the listener’s ideas and preconceptions, re–dealing them out in a way one wouldn’t think possible. Quietly riveting; a proper work of mourning.” – The Wire Richard Youngs’ impressive body of work continues to mount. This leading wizard of drone and minimal psychedelic folk will soon unleash Airs Of The Ear, an opus that invokes new magic as it searches for ears to ensnare. Building on his previous esteemed recordings Airs Of The Ear does not merely reside in the essential ecology of Richard Youngs – that is, the spiritual nexus between the oft–disparate realms of traditional folk and the avant–garde – it actually embodies this ecology. Acoustic instruments coexist perfectly with electric ones and neither class of instrumentation is ever trumped by the other contraptions on the record. A nearly perfect balance is achieved. Having released wonderful albums with Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), Simon Wickham–Smith, Neil Campbell, Sunroof! and Vibracathedral Orchestra, Youngs is also featured on the latest Damon & Naomi live album, Song To The Siren. Lushly orchestrated clarinets, strings and chimes ride atop a classic beat and female vocal jab while Ozzborn holds court. With a psychedelic stream of consciousness that flings barbs at commercial MCs while describing the constantly shifting parallel universe he inhabits, Ozzborn’s latest album simply has to be heard to be believed. His versatility and open–mindedness stretch the singer/songwriter well past the breaking point. Fortunately, Blau has a genius for fixing things and will bravely jump into thorny obstacles in order to patch together his mixtape of life.
