I’ve met a lot of people who have told me they want to be writers. Hey, its a great thing. The
world can always use more writers, more stories, more points of view, and so on. There is
one problem many of them keep running into.
How to start writing.
Developing the practice of writing everyday takes persistence It is a habit that gets
developed over time.
One thing I’ve found is that it is easier to write every day than it is to take breaks between
days.
The hardest thing about writing is getting started. So, here are a couple tips on how to get
started writing and how to develop the daily writing habit.
How to start writing tip number one-Look up
a writing prompt.
Writing prompts are just simple ideas and scenarios meant to give you a creativity jump.
(Sort of like one car jumping another.) You can look these up on the internet. Some are silly,
but hey if they work for you they work for you.

How to start writing tip number two-Don’t start at
the beginning.
I rarely start any writing project ( even this blog post) at the beginning. I usually start with
the basic idea or argument that I want to make and get that down. I build the rest of the
work around the main idea. Do this and the computer’s copy and paste function will be your
best friend.
How to Start Writing tip number three-Doodle.
Remember when you were bored in High school and started drawing little circles on your
notebook? It’s OK to do that too. just start putting pen to paper, or if you are on an electronic
device just start writing words down. It doesn’t matter if you make a sensible thought or
not. The whole point is to get your mind in the creative writing mode.
These are just a few of the idea that come off the top of my mind. There is a good article on
developing the habit of writing by Joanna Penn on her blog, The Creative Penn. One of her
suggestions is that you figure out how many works you want to put out and then figure out
how many words you need to write in a day.
“Basically you need to decide how much you want to write e.g. 3 x 80,000 word books in
a year = 240,000 words?. Obviously there’s an editing cycle but the first thing is to get the
rough draft done and Dean advocates a regular amount of new fiction writing in order
to meet production schedules – so to meet that, I need to write ~666 words per day, every
day of the year. That’s not actually too much as it takes me about 30-45 mins to write 500
words (if I know what I want to write about)”
