Increase your face value with a beautiful smile Fans of “Extreme Makeover” know cosmetic dentistry is a crucial part of the TV show. That comes as no surprise considering a person’s smile is often the most noticed facial feature. When 1,000 Americans were recently asked what they notice first when introduced to a new person, 94 per cent said they are likely to notice a person’s smile. In fact, they said they’re more likely to notice someone’s smile before their height, eyes or figure. The poll also found nearly three-quarters of those surveyed believe people with a nice smile make friends more easily and more than one-third agree that bad teeth overshadow the rest of a person’s appearance. Don’t settle for stained, chipped, missing or misshapen teeth. Advances in dentistry have come up with answers to these problems that will help you smile with confidence. When Alysa Jeannotte met with Dr. Gary Fong and Dr. Jennifer Sismey of Sun Dental Group at 718 3 Ave. S., her goal was to have straighter, whiter teeth. “My concerns are that my teeth aren't white. My front teeth on the bottom and the top are chipped and they're crooked,” she said. “I don't have horrible teeth. I never had to have braces when I was younger or anything like that. But in my mind, a smile changes your whole face.” To help giver Jeannotte a whiter, brighter smile, her teeth will be whitened using the Nite White Bleaching System. Bleaching has been clinically proven to be safe and effective and many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. To address the small gap between Jeannotte’s front bottom teeth, Dr. Sismey and Dr. Fong chose to straighten her teeth with invisible braces. Invisalign treatments consist of a series of aligners that the user switches out about every two weeks. Each aligner is individually manufactured with exact calculations to gradually shift the teeth into place for a smile that truly fits. Dr. Sismey says because Invisalign is more visually appealing than the bands, and brackets and wires associated with traditional metal dental braces, they’re a popular choice among adults. To make Jeannotte’s teeth appear even more attractive, she underwent tissue recontouring, or cosmetic gum surgery, to give her teeth a nicer shape. Lumineers, the porcelain veneer product on “Extreme Makeover” may be placed over her front teeth to change their shape and colour. These contact-lens-thin “smile shapers” help close any spaces between teeth, lengthen short teeth and fix any chipped teeth. People today are paying more attention to their appearance, said Dr. Fong. That’s because when a person looks good, they feel good. An attractive, healthy smile helps build self-esteem and confidence, which is something worth smiling about.
