PROPOSED PROJECT NAME: The Nature’s Pharmacy Project
SUMMARY / BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE PROPOSED PROJECT Traditional and indigenous knowledge systems across cultures include understanding and actual utilization of the medicinal properties of plant species. This led people to believe and respect nature to the extent of mystifying it, resulting to the preservation and cultivation of plant species. The project hopes to promote the preservation of indigenous knowledge on traditional medicine at the same time understanding sustainable development though conservation and preservation of the environment. The project has three phases: 1. The Cultural Mapping Phase students/participants research on traditional home remedies using plants. This is done through library work and interviews with elders/botanists. 2. Garden Construction Phase (Virtual and actual) virtual and actual garden will be designed and constructed.
3. The Publication Phase participating schools can tour the gardens of their counterpart schools which can be toured using the internet ICT technologies.
RATIONALE FOR THE PROJECT: We seldom see the perpetual benefit nature can give us, so, we cut trees and destroy plants to turn them into timber, or dyes or fibers. We tend to take nature for granted because of our ignorance of their qualities and the other benefits we get from them. Many Plants have medicinal properties and in fact, many of these plant species supply pharmaceutical company with the raw materials in producing medicines. Objectives: Promotion of Environmental awareness 1. Understand the medicinal values of plant species 2. Plant trees/ cultivate medicinal plants 3. Preservation of plant species Promotion of Bilateral (Asian/European) philosophies on aesthetics and design. (I) Understand western and eastern design philosophies (II) Understand western and eastern aesthetics (III) Promotion of Understanding of Cultures. The objectives of the project are anchored on this year’s AEC-Net Theme: Environment and Sustainable Development.
EXPECTED CONTRIBUTION FROM ASIAN SCHOOLS/STUDENTS: 1. A Cultural Map- a catalogue of medicinal plants endemic to the country (preferably endemic/common to the school location) and their corresponding use in medicinal applications. An introductory essay by the teacher in charge on traditional garden technologies, medical customs and traditions of their countries and garden designs should also be included in this section. 2. Garden Construction- participating schools will construct a virtual garden and an actual garden planted/built on a site in the participating schools. Participating schools should upload the virtual in the internet. 3. Virtual tour- participating schools should tour the gardens of their counterpart schools which can be visited using the internet and ICT technologies. Participants are encouraged to visit all the participating school’s gardens. 4. Actual Garden reconstruction - participating Asian schools would construct a Nature’s Pharmacy Garden in the next AEC-Net Conference. Since the venue for the next conference will be in Asia, the following will be considered: A. All participating Asian schools will build an actual garden using the medicinal plants found in their countries. This is either the participants (teacher in charge) will import the plants or B. If the customs laws from the participating countries does not allow, plants common to both countries will be used.
