When I’m with you, I feel what love really is.
It’s standing by my side when no one else will,
Telling me everything will be all right when I’m crying my eyes out,
Calling me to ask how my day went,

Encouraging me, when it seems like no one else cares,
Listening to my problems even though you have friends to see,
Making time for me because I’m important to you,
Knowing that you’re always going to be around when everyone else
                           leaves.

Love is you comforting me when my family and I get into a fight.
When I feel like quitting everything, you tell me that I can do it.
You show me that I can do whatever I put my mind on and succeed.
You show me what real love is.

We all want to fit together as if we were pieces to a puzzle
We make one picture from thousands of pieces
We shape ourselves into things we aren’t sometimes
                                   Breaking the puzzle apart
Even when the old piece is much better than the new
There is a need to feel the need to be similar to others

Some will worry they don’t fit into the puzzle
Letting others pressure them into being
                                   something they are not
When there is always a place somewhere to fit in
Instead of trying to fit into places that don’t work

Some pieces are bigger than others
                                   Making a bigger impact
and affecting the pieces all around them
                                   Some are smaller
But affect others all the same
Someone has an empty space that they left open
                                   Ready to impact someone’s life
And we need to leave that empty space open too

Floating among stars, the clouds and the moon,
Taking a trip to the nearest world, to see what can be seen.
Venturing in places beyond, slipping down a deep black hole,
Into the free fall of the dreaming imagination.
The place in which the loveliest mind of the youngest child goes to rest,
The place in where the pale moon feebly gleams.
The place where the minds of young ones go,
After sleep has overtaken the body.
Riding a silken pillow across the heat stricken deserts,
Soaring through the clouds with a band of angels.
Settling heads upon a velvet pillow of twinkling stars,
For when the dreamer rests her mind,
All worldly thoughts quietly slip away.

I first heard of Ocean Shores when I was 5 years
old watching a TV showed that was based there. I
thought Ocean Shores was going to be and look like
the TV show, but it didn’t, and I was happy because
the TV show didn’t give away what it looked like,
but then I was sad because I was hoping it would
look somewhat like the TV show and I could have
told my friends that it look liked the TV show.
Ocean Shores is a small town past Olympia. The
first time that I went to Ocean Shores was when I 8
years old and I was in the 3rd grade. I went with my
sister Sam, who was 10 years old at the time, my
aunt Liz, and my aunt’s friend from work, Treva.
      We left a little bit after Sam’s 5th grade graduation;
it was a present from Liz to her, but I got to go any-
way. I was really excited to go because we were sleep for a little bit. Sam was down at the ocean for
going camping, and I’d never gone camping without about an hour.
my parents. When we left, I was so excited and so Later that morning after everyone got up and
was Sam. Sam and I played cards in the car, but ready, we decided to go shop at the Ocean Shores
then Sam fell asleep until we got to Olympia and I shopping center. We went and ate at there little ice
was talking with Liz and Treva. It took us three and cream shop that had great choices to pick from and
a half hours to get there, but in the end it was worth their ice cream tasted really good. I decided to have
it. some vanilla, which was very good. After that we
We decided to set up the tents at the camp site kept looking around, but we couldn’t find anything,
first before going to the ocean. Then we went to the so we left and went back to the ocean for a little bit.
ocean and walked around there the ocean for about When we got to the ocean it was still very cold
an hour. We didn’t go swimming because it was and windy. Liz told Sam and me that we could go
cold. Liz and Treva told us that we would be able to into the ocean, but she wouldn’t because of the
go to the ocean in the morning without them. They weather. Sam decided to go far out into the ocean
told Sam that she could go alone because she was with her pant legs rolled up. I also went into the
older and they told me that I was younger so I ocean with my pant legs rolled up, but I didn’t go
needed adult supervision, but they said it was fine if that far out like Sam did. Liz and Treva were taking
I went with Sam because they knew that she would pictures of the ocean and of the horses. When I went
be able to keep an eye on me. into the water I found a sand dollar and I was very
So that night Sam and I couldn’t go to sleep. happy because it was my very first one so then I put
When Sam and I finally feel asleep, it felt like we it into my shoe because I didn’t want to lose it. As I
were only asleep for an hour. Sam and I woke up looked up from putting the sand dollar into my shoe
about 6:30 in the morning. Sam decided to go to the Sam called me and said that she wanted to show me
ocean for a little bit while I stayed at the camp site something farther out in the ocean. So I decided to
to try and get more sleep because it was going to be go farther out and look. When I got farther out, I
a long day. Sam came back really early because it noticed the change in the water temperate and I told
was cold and windy down there and Sam couldn’t Sam that. Sam told me that’s why she wanted me to
find any sand dollars or any shells, so she came go farther out to see the change in temperate the
back to the camp site to get warm and go back to

huge white wave right behind me. The next thing Shores.
I know is that it knocks me down. Sam started to Ocean Shores is one of my favorite places to

we got back to our camp spot, I was very tired

When the next day finally came, we woke up

Running From Life
By: Nicola B.

When I feel like my life couldn’t get much worse,
When I feel the lowest of low,
I wish that I could get away from it all.
Get a ride and drive for hours, never wanting to come back,
Drift away into the ocean and not even think about home,
Fly until there’s no more sky left to see.
And I don’t stop to think about who will miss me,
I can convince myself friends and family won’t care much,
That they might even be glad to have me gone.
And even if they do, this is my life
In the end, I need to live the way I want.
                                                                   Untitled
Sometimes when I’m angry, it’s good to get away Austin K.
Leave for a while to talk a walk outside, 8th grade
Or go to a friend’s house for a shoulder to cry on.
But after I’ve let the frustration out,
And left the place that made me angry for a few hours,
I need to come back home
Come back to my life and the ones that I love,
Remember again who I am and how I live
And I tell myself these things;
I can’t keep running away from my problems.

If I don’t work on them, think them through,
They will always come back- maybe worse than before.
Life isn’t easy for anyone, even if it seems like it sometimes
And what makes it okay is the little things,
When I have a good day, or when I have one of those moments
And realize how grateful I am to have someone I love,
All the happy parts of my life, no matter how small they may be.
Even when the sad times seem to take over,
Running away still wouldn’t change anything.

    The Lighthouse

    By: Danika G.

The ocean wind whips long stems along the ground,
Sending torrents of ocean spray onto the darkening sand.
The sky, a vast blanket of aching gray,
Covering everything it touches with a hollow shadow.
A storm is brewing in the depths of the horizon.

In the distance a roar mumbles from nowhere,
Sending all creatures out of the area into safer hiding.
The rain now slashing through the sky like daggers,
The angry ocean twirling and crashing in a cruel waltz,
All alone stands the massive tower, protecting all ships at sea.

Through the winds, the shadows, battering rain,
The beast stays put, never complaining,
Dutifully doing her job, bringing sailors safely home-
The beacon of hope and the beam to light the path. Untitled By: Cody P., 8th Grade.

So lonely stands, has always and will always,
Waiting patiently for another storm, another chance to save a life.
So beautiful she looks on a sunny day,
So threatening, protective, in the midst of a storm.

The ocean is her single companion, her mortal enemy, her best friend.

The beautiful woods of Fairy Ville, were
full of colorful pine trees, ferns, beautiful flowers
that were wild like the wind. There were also lots of

one day there was a girl named Darcy that lived in
colorful woods. She also lived with three fairies.
She lived with these fairies because when Darcy

   The Queen
   By: Maddie C.

There once was a cat that lived in a chair,
It was almost like her secret lair.
   She never could be caught,
   It meant that not
   Everyone knew she was there.
She’d sleep while they were gone
While they went to the store
But get off when they came home,
For she never could get caught.
She knew that is wasn’t allowed
And for getting away with it,
   She was quite proud.
She would prance all around the house
   just like a brat
And would act as if she was not just a cat
They would see her and get mad
   Spray her with cold water
so that she knew she was bad
So she would jump off of it
    when they came around,
   And simply pretend
she’d been lying on the ground.
For she could never get caught.
   This is their cat,
They got her from the pound
   The sneakiest one yet,
But yet the only one ever around
And she never has gotten caught.

    A Rainbow
    By Laura H.

The rain on the black pavement was glistening.
The sun was shining, giving the pavement that faint glare.
Rain mixed with sun seems to always allow a rainbow to appear.
The colors all so different and bright
Leaving red, yellow, orange, blue, green, and violet behind,
Each a feeling of sadness, hope, or happiness
Or all feelings put together into one.
    The rainbow
Brings more life into the world,
    More color, more joy.
    Just like rain
Making you sit inside just gazing out of the window all day
    And sun bringing
That feeling when it comes out after the rain passes away,
Making it feel like a new day
All of course are kinds of weather,
    Moods in the sky.

    The Perfect
    Match
    By Elisa C.

I have wanted a horse ever since I was little. My
aunt Linda, who lives in a city called Onalaska, has
12 horses and rides them non-stop.
My dad always said, “Elisa, if you want a
horse it takes a lot of work. It can’t just be a pet that
is fun to ride and look at. You have to groom it eve-
      ryday and clean its stall.”
I knew that it takes a lot of work, but I
know the reality of it all. I talked to my Aunt Linda
more about me wanting a horse.
She always said, “Dear, I don’t
think it is a good idea for you to get a huge animal
at this age. You’re only 6 years old and still don’t
know what it takes to really own your own pet.”
I always just rolled my eyes because I was
determined to get my own horse. One day around

It’s a cold night the wind whistling a tune
Rain hitting the ground making puddles
A quiet siren in the distance
The boulevard as quiet as the empty streets
      There is only silence

It’s a warm day, the swish of cars driving by
      The sun reflecting off windows
A honk from traffic in the distance
The avenue is now flooded with cars going this way and that
      There is life

Two different worlds of day and night

Cheers to the streets

For we are the kids who Slipping into the crevice of the abandoned barn.
Invented over the line, She knows only one way to eat,
And were cursing at nine. The fly finds distraction by light,
And clings to the almost-clear web.
Cheers to the torn jeans,
And grass stains. She rushes to the struggling,
Twirls the sticking string to the fly,
To whiffle, Eating it whole.
Pick-up, Patching the hole in the web,
Five Hundred, She awaits another to
And Bump. Fall for the trap.

For we are the kids who He comes into sight,
Shot down the squirrels, The bright sun comes from the ceiling.
Took out the windows, She scurries back to the crevice
And hurdled the fences. From where the sun cannot find her.
He swipes a finger on the dusty railing,
Beat down on Disappointed by the un-kept nature of the barn.
By the wet Seattle winters. He notices the infamous red mark of the widow,
And blessed And heads for the fly swatter.
By warm Seattle summers.
                               She doesn’t understand,
A neighbor, The massive blue toward her.
A brother, She scampers to a hidden hole out into the field.
A friend. She finds peace in the rusted coffee can,
The kids who were Building another web,
Raised by the streets. And awaiting once again,
For a creature that cannot hurt her,
Cheers. Only feed her.

The streets of the cities are full of us.
We roam the sidewalks with old coffee cans,
Asking for change, and either type will do.
Waking up to the cold pavement next to crowded streets,
Not sure what the world is going to throw
At us today, but ready to take it.
Sitting on the stone walkways under viaducts day after day
Not being able to do anything.
      Dreaming about a perfect future,
But knowing that that future will never come,
We would give up everything to be like them,
Living in warm houses with a family that we love,
But as to this day all we can do is dream.

    The Lights in the Sky

    By Brandy S.
There is a time every year
Where the sky is turbulent and awake.
Open and wide, the lines are divided
    Into clear and wonderful wrinkles.

    Dancing high in the atmosphere,
Stepping on the edge of the world,
Stretching from the surface of the Untitled Jordan C. , 6th grade.
world to the face of the ancient myths.

Spilling drops of sea foam green, Bleeding a god worthy red,
    Sweeping purple throughout the universe,
    Yellow shoots down from above.
Shades of turquoise and blue dangle
    from the stars.
Strings of highlighter orange and maroon twist
    around each other.
Giant rainbows engulf the world in a tie die fashion.

Needles pin themselves into the atmosphere,
Lighting up the pupils of so many in wonder
Occasionally hiding in the arms of trees,
Publicly exposing the hidden pleasure of beauty.

Colors splash into one another, making the sky live.
    To roar with emotions,
To frolic on the lining of the atmosphere,
A rushing river overhead lighting the way.
