					                                    Tower Construction and Design Project
General Science An analysis of the Scientific Method
Purpose:
To design and construct the tallest possible freestanding tower from a single sheet of paper and 30
centimeters of tape.
To use the scientific method and analytical skills to guide the construction of the tower:
Research (trying out designs), Hypothesis (find your best design), Experiment (build and test your best design),
and Conclusion (does the design work and meet the criteria?).

Materials:
First Day
1 - Sheet of white paper per person (each group member)
        Scissors
Second Day
1 - Sheet of colored paper per group (ask for after you have decided upon a design)
1 - 30 centimeter section of tape (separate into smaller sections if you so chose)
Scissors - available upon request if you promise not to hurt yourselves.

Procedure:
THIS WILL TAKE TWO CLASS PERIODS.
Any messes in your area will DEDUCT from your point totals. Basically I don’t want to clean
anything up.
FIRST CLASS
You and your group will use your white (test) paper to find the best design.
    1. Each person, in each group will use their one sheet of white paper to create various design
           possibilities.
    2. You may cut, fold, tear, etc in order to build the tower. This will be your
           observation/research.
    3. Compare all the design possibilities for the group; decide on the best or most plausible design,
or the aspects of all the designs that can be incorporated into a final design that will create
           the winning tower.
    4. Decide on a final design.
    5. Hand in the attached paper.
SECOND CLASS
    6. Get the colored sheet of paper; this is the paper that your group will construct your final
design with. This will be your hypothesis.
    7. Build your final design from the colored paper and the tape. Remember you can cut, tear, fold,
           etc.
    8. Plan ahead, remember you only have till 10 minutes or so before the end of the class (I will
decide the time limitations based on when you start the project.) This is your experiment.
    9. We’ll measure the towers at that time.
Testing and Competition:
Please note: to avoid any controversy, I will be the final judge of any disputes.
    1. Your tower must be free standing for five (5) seconds.
    2. The tower will be measured from the base to its tallest point.
    3. The tallest tower will of course be declared the winner of the tower design.
Please note: over the years towers almost two meters in height were constructed.

Each person will hand in this paper.
Name: General Science

EACH person needs to hand this paper in.
Turn this in at the end of EACH day.

Answer the questions (use another sheet if you run out of room):
   1. What were some of the limiting factors in the construction of your design? (Why didn’t it
stand as tall as you wanted?)(2.5 POINTS)

    2. What could you do differently next time to create a better tower design?(2.5 POINTS)
