I started playing pool in 1993 at the age of 19. Then, after taking a nearly two-year hiatus to work as a Software Technician, I returned to pursue playing pool toward the end of 1995. Having quit a lucrative IT job, I traveled on the road for awhile, learned about the WPBA and decided to qualify to earn the right to join the tour. I played in my first WPBA event in October of 1997 and went on to play for more than two years. Like many players, I struggled to make a living and my passion for pool was compromised because I could not continue to play financially. I was ranked as high as 17th – I consider myself a natural player and would undoubtedly be playing today if the financial reward equaled the effort it takes to be a top player. I have always loved the game of pool, as well as other sports. However, having been around pool for many years, I see very little change other than the quality of players has improved considerably. I am an avid sports fan and I can’t justify why pool, and its players, have not received the recognition they deserve. As a Board Member, my ultimate goal will be to raise the expectations and awareness of players, fans, sponsors, media and mainstream public. At the end of the day, I want there to be tremendous benefits and rewards for being a Professional Pool Player. My Work Experience: As Vice President of Alfie Incorporated I am responsible for developing and implementing a global business structure that offers a range of services, including Appearances/Exhibitions, Corporate Partnerships, Products, and website features that generate residual income. I oversee the administrative office and I am directly responsible for managing the company’s website content, member database and continuous stream of information to and from the public. Prior to Alfie Inc., I worked for the Law Offices of Michael D. Miller from 2002 – 2006. I was hired as a Computer Consultant, then kept on as the Legal Assistant and eventually promoted to Office Manager overseeing employees, accounting and office functionality. In addition, I was directly responsible for handling all personal injury claims from inception and preparing insurance settlement demands. Ad interim, I was the Office Administrator from 2004-2006 for Acorn Consulting Services, which is a Forensic Engineering firm specializing in the semiconductor industry. I mention these two positions because they are very different in their faculty and substance, and I was essentially managing both facilities. 3 I traveled all over the U.S. playing Semi-pro and eventually Professional Pool from 1996 – 2000. Some of my Objectives: To create alternative avenues for revenue coming into the organization: For example, I’m an IT minded person so I would propose that we improve the WPBA brand name, the products, features and overall appearance of the website. I’d like to see the organization streamline matches online, enabling us to provide live coverage of events. Right now, we pay for TV coverage. Streamlining matches is not limited to Sunday and it’s reoccurring revenue that comes directly into the organization. To increase the number of events held throughout the year: I will propose to hold at least one event per month and more non-televised events. There is no reason why events shouldn’t be held in poolrooms all over the U.S. We can stipulate requirements and ensure that the events meet certain standards. To improve the relationship and awareness of the public and our supporters: A lot can be done under this context. Just to name a few: (1) I want to create ways to strengthen each players’ image and likeability by developing storylines, interviewing more players, and asking questions so that the audience knows more. It would not be difficult to hold Press Conferences before taped matches, or even post match, to get into the minds of the players, as in tennis or golf. The audience loves to hear what the athletes are thinking; (2) I think it’s essential that we have better stats and we educate the general audience about the game and the players. In my opinion, we are really weak in this area. I can’t imagine watching golf or tennis without the constant influx of historical data; and (3) I firmly believe that we have struggled because we have little to no association with charitable work. We have to start contributing more, or at least start organizing more involvement with charities. All major Sport Associations have been eminently successful on the shoulders of community and charitable foundations. 4 LINDA L.
