                                               EUROPEAN DIESEL CARS - EUDIESEL

The scope of the cluster ”European Diesel cars” (EUDIESEL) is to develop DI Diesel passenger cars
as clean as gasoline cars of the year 2005 but with lower CO2 emissions with respect to today’s DI gasoline cars.

This will be achieved by using advanced technologies in the fields of
      § advanced Common Rail fuel injection
      § new combustion process (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition for example)
      § air charge (one system fully flexible valve actuation, the second system with variable valve timing
      § exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) management
and, to the necessary extent,
      § exhaust gas aftertreatment systems with NOx reduction catalysis and particulate traps.

 Summary and Outlook
q The European cluster “European Diesel Cars - EUDIESEL -” will demonstrate
  the potential to meet all future requirements.

q The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Diesel and Gasoline, will be the
  dominating propulsion system for the next 30 to 50 years.

q Alternative propulsion systems will enrich the market, but these technologies
  are not replacement-technologies for gasoline and diesel engines.

q Fuel Cell, Hybrid, CNG- and Hydrogen-ICE will be successful in segments such
  as conurbation, commercial or regional fleets, or for special demands.

q Fuel-cell vehicles have still a long development-path to go
  (weight & costs reduction, maturing the technologies).

q Hydrogen is only meaningful in the mobile applications, if all technological
  and economical barriers have been overcome ( past 2020).
