Icebreakers
An activity used as a warm up. It’s useful to create a risk-free atmosphere and to gain the learner’s’ confidence. – What are some of your favorite Icebreakers? – How can they be used in virtual classroom training?
This is the type of “thinking” we will use throughout today’s session.
Introduction
This course focuses on the design and development of Virtual Classroom Training (VCT) to all agencies who create VCT courses. We will demonstrate this capability through Elluminate Live, however the content is system agnostic.
Course Objectives At the end of this session you will be able to: – Identify the anatomy of a Virtual Classroom – Describe the tools in most Virtual Classrooms to design robust interactivity – Transfer ILT design skills to Virtual Classroom Training (VCT) – Create Facilitator Guides and materials clearly and easily for VCT – Share Best-practices and experiences The duration of this course is approximately 2.5 hours
Introduction
Agenda
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Why use virtual classrooms? The anatomy of a virtual class Transferring Instructor-led Training (ILT) design skills to VCT Designing robust interactivity Developing VCT Materials Look at best Practices
Tell Me
Have you ever designed a course for a Virtual Classroom before?

Why Use VCT?
Why bother changing from ILT? – – – – – – – – – – – Makes training more accessible Delivers engaging, interactive presentations Organizes breakout sessions Receives instant feedback Testing Cost savings: VCT is 80% less Impact: Learners interact with experts Global Accessibility Location, location, location Learning JIT Automated Administration
Expectations
What this session is and isn’t: – – – – – Not a technical Elluminate Live session Not a functional Elluminate Live session Is focused on Virtual Classroom capabilities Is focused on Designing in the virtual classroom environment Is focused on Developing materials to be used in any VC tool.

A Question of Timing
• How long should a VCT experience last?
– – – – 1 to 3 hours max Build in Breaks for classes over 90 minutes Spread large classes over several days Blend your solutions appropriately
• How often should interactivity occur?
– 3-5 minutes
Motivating Online Learners VCT Design Template
ILT to VCT
Polling Question
VCT Design requires disciplined design principles equivalent to ILT.
Yes, I agree
No, I do not agree
ILT to VCT
Polling Question
Which is NOT included in the ADDIE instructional design model?
Design
Implementation Distribution Analyze
ILT to VCT
Polling Question
The difference between a class and a course is:
Length of the event
They are synonymous
A class has a specific time to attend A course is designed to be taught Both C & D are correct
ILT to VCT
Summary – – – – – – – – – ILT Design Skills will transfer to VCT It’s about Design not Technology Additional skills are required, but easy to attain ADDIE Model applies It will take practice Engagement is key A bad design is a bad design Classes should be no longer than 2.5 hours Add breaks
Motivating Online Learners
Robust Interactivity
Robust Interactivity
Know ALL of Your Classroom Capabilities Presenting Information – VOIP (Vocally) – Documents & Presentations PPT, WORD, PDF, etc. – White Boards – Application Sharing – Web Browser/Content Sharing – Non VCT tools i.e., preworkshop assignment via email, etc. Interactivity – Passing Presentation Rights – Chat Function – Asking & Receiving Feedback – Panel Discussions – Testing & Polling – Breakout Sessions
Robust Interactivity
Presenting Information Documents & Presentations – – – – One or more documents on your computer Share anything that prints No application needed Transition & Animation apply to PowerPoint
Robust Interactivity
Presenting Information Whiteboards – Shared with all attendees – Get creative • Brainstorming • Idea generation • Ice Breaker • Flip Chart – Annotate, copy, save, paste and print
Robust Interactivity
Presenting Information Application Sharing – – – – – No need to run Application locally Includes animation effects Demonstrate & teach software applications Edit documents Give control over to learner
Robust Interactivity
Presenting Information Web Browser & Content – – – – View same web pages you access Experience your interactions Internet, Intranet or local desktop Annotate
Robust Interactivity
Polling Question
One of the documents that can be shared is an email.
I agree I don’t agree
Robust Interactivity
Polling Question
Which of the following can not be presented in a virtual classroom content viewer?
Excel spreadsheet
Photoshop graphic file WAV audio file Adobe PDF file
Robust Interactivity
Interactivity Chat – – – – – Send & Receive Messages Appears in Chat Message Box Presenter sets Chat privileges Useful to distribute info to everyone Allows participants to “say hello”
Robust Interactivity
Interactivity Asking & Receiving Feedback – – – – Pose a question at any time Verbally or through Chat Allows for feedback Hand Raising, Yes/No, Too Fast or Slow
Robust Interactivity
Interactivity Testing & Polling – – – – – – Multiple choice Multiple-multiple choice Yes/No True/False Prepare questions in advance View, share and track results
Robust Interactivity
Polling Question
The Chat function allows:
A Learner to communicate with the Presenter

Practical Application Exercise #1
Bhavna is designing several different courses. She needs to write exercises for each of the following objectives.
1. 2. 3. 4. To define 10 legal terms To Identify 4 roles (people) in a project team To list fears when speaking in public To choose what not to do when dealing with difficult customers
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Select one of the 4 objectives How you would construct an exercise for instructor-led training. Now what you would do to make this exercise interactive in VCT? You have 7.5 minutes to complete Begin now
Robust Interactivity
What do people remember?
People Remember
Robust Interactivity
Summary – Get to know your VCT tool’s capabilities well – Stretch your imagination – Make sure all interaction has value – Do nothing gratuitous – Ask yourself, “How would I do it in ILT?” Translate it to VCT – Remember “A bad design is a bad design.”

Developing VCT Materials
Recommendations Using Pictures – A Picture paints a thousand words… • www.flickr.com • Let participants know what you look like Handouts
– Handout supporting materials in .DOC, PDF, PPT
Miscellaneous – Create subdirectory for all course files and store/ZIP – Create back-up copies of everything – Don’t skip alpha/beta tests

Practical Application Exercise #2 Think of Virtual Classes you either attended, read about, designed or conducted. Write down:
1. What worked? Why? 2. What didn’t work, Why? 3. What tips would you suggest?
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Work through the exercise Raise your hand when completed Then, use the chat function to give us a 2-word description of your experience Be prepared to volunteer, to speak You have 3 minutes to complete Begin now

Best Practices
Additionally What have I learned? – Position Learner as ally – Don’t be afraid of pre-work - Lecture ahead of time if possible. Use online time for collaboration – Certify trainers through X# hours as student – Avoid: Death by PowerPoint – Build in collaboration & interactivity – Use experts wherever you can – Interaction every 3-5 minutes – Don’t forget what you already know: • You need ice-breakers • You need variety • Backup’s for PowerPoint (in case of lost connection) 24 Hours in the Life of a Synchronous Learner • Call on people
Assignment
Practical Application Exercise #3, Homework
You will write a training lesson called, Writing Objectives within the next two weeks. After which you send to me for review:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Take my presentation, Writing Objectives and write a 15 minute lesson Make it interactive by involving the learner Create at least 1 exercise and 2 polling questions Insert the Leader’s Guide in the notes section of PowerPoint Email me (gdavis1959@aol.com) within 2 weeks from today
