         LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION INTRUCTIONS
                  PETALUMA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

*A reference may be a teacher, administrator, counselor, coach, leadership teacher, volunteer coordinator or employer.
Petaluma Educational Foundation manages 50 scholarships and each one provides specific requirements. In
addition, the scholarship may list a “Special Emphasis”, some quality or accomplishment that will be important
in selecting the recipient of the scholarship award.

The student has asked you to provide a Letter of Recommendation for one or more of the PEF Scholarships.
We understand you are busy, often inundated with requests. Therefore, we have attempted to make the process
as easy as possible for you.

The student will provide the Letter of Recommendation Form FOR EACH SCHOLARSHIP with the top
portion already filled out. Please follow these easy guidelines:

COMMON AREAS FOR ALL SCHOLARSHIPS: Each PEF Scholarship considers five
common components. Please base your recommendation on one or more of the following:

              Academic Achievements/Honors
              Athletic Participation/Successes
              School Clubs and Activities
 Community service (volunteer/community activities outside of school)
 Work Experience (outside of school)

ADDRESS THE CRITERIA OF THE SCHOLARSHIP: Please take a moment to review
the Requirements and Special Emphasis (if applicable), listed on the top portion of the form.
Please let us know how you are qualified to evaluate the student for the requirements and/or
        emphasis of this specific scholarship

For example, if the scholarship is for a student with a passion for basketball, let us know if you
are a coach and what type of player the student is. If the scholarship is to attend a
vocational/trade school, please explain why he/she would succeed.

THE FORM: You may attach your own typed Letter of Recommendation to the PEF form
(student provided) or you may download the form as a Word document from www.pefinfo.com.

COMPLETE AND SIGN: Please remember to sign the Letter of Recommendation Form.

Thank you! We hope this makes your task easier to complete and more meaningful.

        LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION INTRUCTIONS
                   PETALUMA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Each applicant must provide two (2) Letters of Recommendation, at least one from an instructor. The second
Letter of Recommendation may be from another teacher or an administrator, a counselor, coach, leadership
teacher, volunteer coordinator or employer.

The purpose of the Letter of Recommendation is for someone who knows you to tell PEF about your
qualifications for the particular scholarship. For this reason, form letters are discouraged.

To make the recommendation process easy for the person providing it (we understand how busy everyone is),
PEF has provided a form to use and these easy guidelines:

STEP 1: Review the “PEF Scholarships – Spring 2009” and determine the scholarships for
which you are qualified. Every PEF Scholarship has a description that lists the Requirements
of the scholarship and a Special Emphasis, if applicable.

ONLY APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WHICH YOU MEET THE MINIMUM
REQUIREMENTS AND SPECIAL EMPHASIS (WHEN LISTED).

STEP 2: Fill out the top portion of the Letter of Recommendation Form with the information
regarding Your Name, Scholarship Name, Requirements and Special Emphasis (if applicable)
       FOR EACH SCHOLARSHP.

STEP 3: Contact two persons (references) and ask them to recommend you for the scholarship.
The person recommending you may address one or all of the five basic components of every
       PEF scholarship:

            Academic Achievements/Honors
            Athletic Participation/Successes
            School Clubs and Activities
 Community service (volunteer/community activities outside of school)
 Work Experience (outside of school)

STEP 4: The reference may attach a separate Letter of Recommendation to the form for the
PEF Scholarship (you provided) or may download the form as a Word document from
www.pefinfo.com, fill it out and print out the copies for you.

STEP 5: Please make sure the reference signs the Letter of Recommendation. They will not be
       considered without a signature.

STEP 6: Include the two Letters of Recommendation with your Application, plus your
Personal Statement and transcript. Return to your high school counselor no later than February
       26, 2009.
