Calculating Percent
Percentage means parts per hundred. It is commonly used to give an easily understood ratio or portion of an item compared to a whole. For example, we often calculate marks as a percentage, rather than say "I got 17 out of 23". Although the answer represents the same ratio, we tend to understand the value of a percentage easier than 17/23 because it is calculated out of 100. Which is easier to understand? 15/18 or 83% In general the formula for calculating percentage is as follows:
Percentage = portion / whole * 100
Example: If a person earns 20 on her investment of $80, what percentage return did she earn? Percentage = Portion / Whole Percentage = 20 / 80 * 100 Percentage = 25% Find the percentage for each of the following: Questions: a) If a store sells $500 of shoes in its Mississauga division and the whole company sells $9425, what percentage of the sales came from the Mississauga division? * 100
