The Saints, coming off two wins in as many weeks, were keen to continue their steak but from the outset, going was tough against a determined Brother side. Brothers took an early 6 - 0 lead through two penalty goals resulting from the Saints infringing at the hotly contested breakdown. However, a powerful run from Logan full-back Tim Burrows put the Saints back on track, as Burrows powered through the Brothers defence from twenty metres out to finish a flowing backline move with a try in the righthand corner and a 6 - 5 lead for the Saints. Both sides had the opportunity to score next with penalty goal attempts, however the Brothers' kicker sliced a simple shot at goal resulting in a costly miss, and Saints' hooker Jay Staunton failed to cleanly strike a longrange attempt from well wide of the uprights. Despite the failure to convert penalties into points, the crowd was treated to further point-scoring before halftime, as the Saints took advantage of a scrum feed in good attacking position to launch an attacking play from the back of the scrum resulting in a try to busy openside flanker Andy Chongnee and a 12 - 6 lead heading into the break. The Saints extended their lead early in the second half when five-eighth Monty Pona, a late call-up to replace Chris Staunton who was injured during the warm-up, kicked across field to Saints' winger Colin Beer who cleanly took the high ball before being tackled. Despite the attention from the defence, Beer managed to pop the ball up to prop Stewart Cameron, who was lurking suspiciously wide on the field for a front-rower, and Cameron dived over in the corner for a try. With a 17 - 6 lead and with Burrows almost collecting his second try of the day with an ambitious kick chase, the Saints looked like they had done enough to guarantee a win, however Brothers showed their true colours and came storming back late in the game. The match quickly turned from a situation where the Saints' were enjoying the run of play, to a situation where they were desperately defending, and it was by only the slimmest of margins that the Logan side managed to shut down a number of incisive Brothers' attacking plays taking advantage of a couple of overlaps out wide in the backs. Eventually, the pressure from Brothers paid off with a line-out move resulting in a try which reduced the Saints' lead to a meagre four points at 17 - 13. Brothers threw everything at the Saints in the dying minutes of the game and last-ditch defence from Beer, blindside flanker Clive Aston, and outside centre David Wilder proved the difference as Brothers simply could not find a gap in the Logan defence. The match ended with one final throw of the dice from Brothers and a wide-ranging backline move had Logan supporters on the edge of their seats, but a tenacious gang-tackle from the Saints' backs resulted in Brothers being held up over the try line as the referee's final whistle blew to signal the end of an enthralling contest. In other matches, the Saints' second grade side managed to hold on for a 19 - 12 win against a strong finishing Brothers' side. The Saints turned in one of their most impressive first-half performances of the year to lead 19 - 0 at the break, but Brothers seemed to have resolved to not let the contest get away from them and came out ferociously in the second-half to score two tries, which was enough for a late bonus point but not enough to steal the win from the Saints. The Saints' third-grade side were swamped early to fall behind Brothers 21 - 0 early in the game, before regaining their composure and almost doing enough to snatch an unlikely victory from Brothers. Unfortunately a late Brothers' try extended the lead to 28 - 14 at full-time, a scoreline which did not properly reflect the closeness of the game. In the colts match, the Saints played their most promising football of the season but were extremely unlucky to lose 10 - 5 against Brothers. The Saints' lead 5 - 3 for the majority of the game but a late Brothers' try snuffed out any hope they had of clinging to the lead for a victory. WYATT CUP REPORT Logan City Saints Wyatt cup team played Sunnybank 2 on Friday night and won 19-7. Great team effort against a very strong opposition.” The Wyatt Cup team is currently on top of the ladder, but there are many hard matches to follow. COLTS REPORT The boys were gallant in defeat. The first half started well and the composure was there and the team looked like they had a lot to offer .We managed to hang onto a 5-3 halftime lead via strong efforts by some of the boys which had the team buzzing. After the break the team had lost a lot of that go forward that they had in the first half as the second half continued the boys started to lose there way a little .Some was fitness and some in the discipline aspects of rugby. The boys never gave up and nearly put a try in the corner only to have a boot slightly over the sideline. If they keep working as a team they are going to be a team not to be taken lightly. Good effort by all and your supporters were talking highly of the efforts put in. For those of you who don’t know what Beetle Nut is, we have extracted a description from Wikipedia –please refer to the next page for an explanation!........................................... Betel nut (also known as Bettlenut, Paaku, Pinang, Areca nut, is not a true nut but rather a drupe, the seed of the Betel palm (Areca catechu). Betel nut is commercially available in dried, cured and natural forms. Considered an auspicious ingredient in Hinduism, it is used along with betel leaf in religious ceremonies and also while honoring individuals. Betel nuts are chewed for their effects as a mildly euphoric stimulant, attributed to the presence of relatively high levels of psychoactive alkaloids and terpineols . Chewing betel nuts increases the capacity to work, also causing a hot sensation in the body, heightened alertness and sweating. Chewing betel nuts is an important and popular cultural activity in many Asian and Oceanic countries. In East and North-east India, Betel nut is chewed with Paan (Betel leaf). .
