President’s Message
Welcome to the 2009 Little Miss Lewisburg and Miss Lewisburg Scholarship pageant. The Rotary Club is honored by your presence here tonight. This year our theme is She’s Got the Look!, and we are proud to present this accomplished and polished group of young women. These ladies have worked hard in preparation for this special night, and we are pleased to offer a forum for their presentations of poise, eloquence, and confidence. The Rotary Club believes that strength of character builds a healthy and vibrant community. We feel that this pageant offers an opportunity for its participants to forge relationships with fellow contestants and colleagues while building the confidence to reach one’s potential. Over one-hundred years ago, Paul P. Harris formed the first Rotary Club in Chicago, Illinois. He brought together a group of professional men who sought fellowship among professional colleagues. As the Rotary grew, its mission expanded while members began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The Lewisburg chapter of the Rotary Club supports education initiatives in our community while aiding various non-profit organizations. Our club is proud to work hard, raise money, and donate our time to help worthy causes in Lewisburg and beyond. In 2009 our club donated over $10,000 to causes such as the American Red Cross, Rotary Student Exchange Program, Imagination Library, The Marshall Education Foundation, the MCHS Band Boosters and Chorus, Junior Leadership Marshall, Columbia State Community College Lewisburg Campus, and many other organizations. In addition to monetary donations to our community, Rotarians generously donate their time to community projects, such as the Annual Christmas Parade and our newest project, the 3rd Annual Goats, Music, and More Rotary Cook-Off. Join us on October 10th for this Kansas City Barbeque Sanctioned event at Rock Creek Park. Our Rotary Club is proud to attract cookers from all around the region to beautiful Marshall County. The impact of our Rotary club does not stop at the borders of Marshall County. Rotary International is a worldwide organization providing humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations and helping build goodwill and peace in the world. There are approximately 1.2 million Rotarians in 167 countries. Rotary International has also taken the lead in eradicating polio throughout the world. Seventeen years ago, Darlene Hill and Betsye Ledford, two very dedicated Rotarians, began this pageant. It continues to be a worthwhile endeavor for all participants, building goodwill and better friendships. We are proud of all the contestants tonight and thank them for their participation in the pageant. Thank you for your attendance, your support of all the contestants, and your support of our Rotary Club. Enjoy the show!

In Honor and In Memory of a Great Rotarian

James Capehart (Jim) Kennedy 1920-2009
Jim Kennedy was a graduate of St Xavier High School in Louisville, KY and The University of Indiana with a BS in finance. Like most men his age, he was a veteran of World War II. He served in the US Army Air Corps as a waist gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber. His crew flew 50 combat missions over European industrial targets in 1943 and ’44. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air War Over Europe Medal with two Battle Stars, and the Presidential Unit Citation for his service. In 1962, Mr. Kennedy moved to Lewisburg to accept the position of Director of Quality Control. He went on to become Plant Superintendent and then Plant Manager. In 1977 he took early retirement to start his own business, Southern Carton Company; a corrugated packaging manufacturer that continues to thrive today. Jim Kennedy was a past President of the Lewisburg Rotary Club, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, and President of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, the Lewisburg Elks Lodge, a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and St John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He served two terms as Chairman of the Marshall County United Givers Fund and was active in many civic and business organizations including the Child Development Center, The Association of Independent Corrugated Converters, and Riverbend Country Club. For those of you who knew Jim well, you know he always loved his beloved wife, Kate, children and grandchildren, his Irish heritage, dancing, a good joke, good friends, and, of course, golf. 16
