 Greetings From Our Regional Director
Well! We are already past the 100th day of the school year and I am still ready and waiting for a snow day or two. Two
hour delays can be nice, but they just can’t compare to a snow day!
On December 16th, we met at the home of Sue Ayers for our annual Nibble and Network party. This is one of my fa-
vorite Western events. We planned some upcoming Western activities, enjoyed some appetizers and lots of laughter.
We also, dropped off artwork for YAM, YPAE shows, and returned past show pieces.
I would like to welcome, Kari Imoro to the Western Regional Board. Kari is our new Regional Awards Chair and she
has been completing her duties as if she has had this position for years. Thank you, Kari, you are a wonderful addition
                       to the Western Board!

Sadly, our membership is declining. Do you know of a colleague that has allowed their membership to lapse? Do you
have any ideas on how OAEA can increase membership? Drop me an e-mail at JCCharves@aol.com and/or ju-
dy.charves@madriverschools.org to let me know what you think. As a member you receive state and local publications to help keep you
informed of art issues, educational developments, and events. You are also, provided with professional development, awesome support
of your peers, networking, and you can involve your students in many art exhibitions sponsored by your Ohio Art Education Associa-
 tion.
We have two wonderful workshops coming up!!! The first is a clay/printmaking workshop, which is rapidly approaching on the 23 rd of
this month. The second is on Saturday, April 20 th and we will be experimenting with several different watercolor techniques. More in-
formation about these workshops can be found in this Hues News. Please contact Cathy Sweny, our Past RD/ Workshop Chair at
csweny@miamisburg.k12.oh.us , if you would like to attend and/or need more information. Oh! Both workshops are FREE for Western
members!!! I hope to see you there.

Celebrate Youth Art Month YPAE/YAM Exhibits
The annual Young People’s Art Exhibition and Youth Art Month events are in the works. State chairs are preparing letter,
labels and shrink-wrapping away to get the art ready for the big March shows in Columbus. The YPAE event will be held at
Rhodes State Tower on Saturday March 16th, 2013 in Columbus.
YAM events are going to also be held on Saturday March 16th at the STRS building in Columbus. See the OAEA website to
find the times for the YAM/YPAE events. If your student has work in these shows, we would love to see you at these pres-
tigious events for our student artists. Look for letters for more info to both shows soon if you submitted art work in Decem-
ber.

Western Region Summer Exhibit UD ARTSTREET
The 2013 regional student art exhibition, also known as the “summer show”, is open to ALL Western members of
OAEA with students in grades K-12! That’s right: It’s not just a K-8 show or a high school show; it’s BOTH! Though
the limit is eight (8) items per member, we will happily settle for one or two. If you submitted work to the YAM/
YPAE, you may already have work in the summer show, because anything not selected for YAM or YPAE is auto-
     Art Street, UD
matically entered in the regional exhibition.
Submissions will be accepted May 1 through May 8. Entries may be packaged and labeled
“WOAEA Summer Show--Mary Baine” and dropped off at the Dayton Art Institute. Though work can sometimes be left with the staff
at the pavilion entrance, we recommend leaving it with the staff at the main desk in the rotunda or asking them if you can bring it to the
ERC yourself. Work can also be dropped off WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. ONLY during the month-
ly regional board meeting at Panera on Brown Street. Other arrangements can be made by contacting Mary Baine
(mbaine@woh.rr.com). Once the work has been collected, the chairs (Mary McGowan Baine and Melissa Clark Bresemann) will organ-
ize it and send letters to all students and teachers with work in the show, which will be displayed at the ArtStreet Gallery on Kiefaber
Street, adjacent to the University of
Dayton. The date for hanging the show has not yet been determined; it is planned for the week of June 10 through 14. The show will be
available for viewing from that point through July 26 during regular gallery hours; the artists’ receptions are scheduled for Saturday,
July 27.

WOAEA Free Spring Workshop April 20, 2013
Looking for a way to jump start Spring? Then join us on April 20th for an Expressive Watercolor Workshop with our own Kathleen Pugh.
Kathy will be hosting and presenting a workshop that will benefit any level painter. She will focus on the basics of watercolor, show ex-
amples, and demonstrate 20+ techniques. Participants will have plenty of time to experiment with techniques and create one or more fin-
ished watercolors. The workshop will be from 9:00 – 3:00 at Arcanum High School, 2012 Trojan Avenue, Arcanum, Ohio. Limit of 24.
This FREE workshop is part of your WOAEA benefits. CEU’s and contact hr certificates will be given. Pack a lunch and come stretch as
an artist and get great ideas for the classroom. Contact Cathy Sweny @ cas113art@aol.com or 937-866-6782 to reserve your spot.

Western Region honored many of our outstanding art
educators at the Greater Cincinnati 2012 OAEA Pro-
fessional Conference. The conference theme, A
Bridge to 21st Century Skills, appropriately describes
the art education philosophy of many who were hon-
ored. We are extremely proud and honored to have
such incredible art educators and advocates in our
                                     region!
Bonita Taggart was the West OAT. She is described
by her Superintendent as “…an extremely talented elementary art teacher…who has
grown the elementary art program (in her district) providing excellent learning oppor-
tunities for all of her students.”
The Middle Division honored Lindsay Gustafson. Her nomina-
tor describes Lindsay as “…the epitome of art teacher as advo-
cate, because she does so much more than merely inhabit her
                         classroom.
Honored with the Secondary Division Award, Sara Green’s nom-
inator wrote “…she motivates all of her students to do more than
they thought possible by encouraging them to create imaginative,
skilled and original art work. She is always in tune with the needs
                         of her students.”
Mary Beth Whitley, from the Dayton Art Institute received the
Museum Division Award. Her nominator wrote, “…Mary Beth
meets the task at hand, from developing student and
teacher programs, training docents for touring the muse-
um collection, to the research and writing of resource materials.”
And Suzanne Mitolo from West Region, the 2011 Ohio Art Educator of
the year, was the Keynote Speaker for Thursday evenings Awards Din-
ner. Suzanne has actively volunteered for the OAEA and WOAEA for
the past 17 years serving in many leadership roles; currently the Past
President and State Conference Coordinator. She has received the Out-
standing Art Teacher for West Region, the Elementary Division Award
for Ohio, NAEA Elementary Division for West Region and is an OAEA
                                  Distinguished Fellow.
While the awards are well deserved and an exciting part of conference,
the workshops, speakers, and the opportunity to mingle and share with
like-minded art educators from across the state are what makes the an-
nual conference an important professional development experience.
