Chapter 8
Sampling Rate
Thousands of Cycles per seconds KHz
22KHz (Human end range) (22,000 Hz)
8,000 Hz (Samples per second) 8 bits per
sample = 64,000 bits per second.
Each sample is assigned a number (0 to
255) 8bits

22 KHz (ear) x 2 = 44.1 KHz (Sampling
rate professional) Note: x2 does not mean
per ear.

- Can you recognize the type of interface to
the Main Board
p 397 Ports for sound card

Details on a particular card
Turtle Beach
Summary
The Montego DDL PCI Sound Card combines
cutting-edge technology, audiophile sonic-quality
and an unprecedented array of features to deliver
PC audio performance normally reserved for the
finest home audio equipment.
Whether you're playing games, listening to music,
or watching DVD movies on your PC, Montego
DDL provides the best surround-sound experience
with multi-channel analog and high-resolution
digital audio. The Dolby® Digital Live feature
converts the surround sound from games into an
encoded Dolby Digital surround sound optical
signal that connects to your 5.1 channel external
digital sound system.

The Montego DDL is designed for PCI 2.1 slots (5
volt only, not compatible with 3.3V). Note that the
Montego DDL is not compatible with PCI-e or
PCI-X slots.
What were the two ways to apply the sound
card for Audio Distribution?

- CDFS (Compact Disk File System
- UDF (ISO 9660) Universal Disk Format File
system

DVD (Digital Versatile Disk or digital video
disk) uses newer UDF system.

Blue-ray Disc (BD) uses UDF 2.5 file system
HD-DVD is now obsolete
Blu-Ray is backward compatible with DVD
and CD technologies

p 402

How data is written to optical discs using a
laser beam.
CDs and DVDs use red lasers. DVD laser is
shorter.
More data can be stored on DVDs.

Blu-ray uses a blue laser, shorter than red,
allowing Blu-ray to store more data.

Important note from Previous Chapter
The following table IS important. Memorize the Table !!! Table is
NOT supplied on any test.

What is the IRQ and port of the First Parallel port? (LPT1)
ans: IRQ 7 Port 378
What is the IRQ and port of the COM3?
ans: IRQ 4 Port 2E8

p 404
Datat is written to only one side on a CD.

Can be written to both sides ona DVD.

DVD or Blue ray can hold data in two layers
one each side. Gives four layers of on one
disl.
Can store 17 GB.

Optical disks are laid out as one continuous
spiral of sectors of equal length, that hold
equal amounts of data.

CLV - Constant linear velocity - Disk spons
faster when the read write head is near the
center of the disk.
CAV - Constant Angular velocity is where
the disk spins at a constant speed.
Audio speed is the reference. 56x is 56
times standard audio speed.

p 404

Breakdown of speeds

Single-sided, single-layer DVD can hold 4.7
GB
Single-sided, dual-layer DVD can hold 8.5
GB

Double-sided, Single-layer DVD can hold 9.4
GB
Double-sided, Dual-layer DVD can hold 17
GB

Blue RAY
Double-sided, single-layer BD can hold 25
GB
Double sided, dual layer DB can hold 50 GB

BDs future may be 500 GB with more layers.
