HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

PRESIDENT'S CORNER
The Month of June
Alumni,
Congratulations, you made May a very successful month for 2011. Fry’s and Police Week are both
huge events that require a lot of up front preparation and lots of hours of volunteer work during the
execution.
The Jim Stone Memorial Fundraiser at Fry’s was very successful in terms of bringing in $2,862.71 in
revenue to be used to purchase items for our police officers. What made this happen was you guys
working diligently putting in a total of 384.5 hours during the three day hot dog sale. There was a little
confusion on Fry’s part regarding the hours of operation but, we made it work to our benefit. Many of
you stayed much longer than you had planned on to make sure we had enough people and that was
awesome. Going forward Fry’s have committed to letting us work all three days of the specified
weekend, as many hours as we wish. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to this
fundraising event, Jim would be very proud you each of you.
Police Week was another success this year with Joan Junker leading the charge. She puts in many
hours months ahead in gaining sponsorship, donations and negotiating food prices for the box
lunches. Many of you also worked ahead of the event in procuring commitments for donations and
very successful. The school children did another outstanding job preparing the notes that were put
into each box lunch for the officers. Every officer that made it to the luncheon on their shift at their
station got fed, we had plenty for everyone. Joe Hawkins made his usual early morning and late night
ice run to keep the water cold, not sure when he sleeps but, he was there when needed.
Several of us attended the Police Memorial service this year and although it had to be brought inside
due to the weather, the Honor Guard did not miss a step, it went off very well. Many family members
of the fallen officers were present to see their loved ones honored. Very nice words were spoken by
the mayor and our own police chief.
Thank you isn’t enough but thank you, thank you, thank you, for making the month of May so very
successful with all of your hard work. You understand the true meaning of volunteering for a cause
and your actions support your beliefs.
YOU GUYS ROCK!
Thanks for all you do ...
Bill Jezek

Friendship isn't about who you've known the longest. It's
about who came and never left your side!

ARLINGTON CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
GENERAL MEETING MINUTES May 12 , 2011
The meeting was called to order by Lt. James Long at 7pm.
Board members present were: President Bill Jezek; Vice President Pat Struble; Secretary Kathleen
Emerson; Treasurer Paul Goodman; Board of Directors Yvonne Vegos, Roger Anderson, Rita Martin
and Joe Hawkins. Guests present were Officer Tim Henz, Sgt. Matt Pederson and Becky Hixson.
President Bill Jezek led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for Jeanne Cash.
Officer Tim Henz told us about ―Shield a Badge‖ started by his parents years ago when he and his
two brothers became police officers. Our alumni members would ―adopt a badge‖ and pray for the
safety of that officer for one year. There will be no calls to the officer, no gifts—just pray every day for
a year for our officer. We now have 650 APD officers and members can email Officer Henz if they
wish to participate. Prayers groups are welcome also and we can submit 10 or 20 names to pray for
the officers.
Sgt. Matt Pedersen, of the Tarrant Regional Auto Crime Task Force, then presented information on
enforcement of auto crimes. This task force was started in 1992 but the State of Texas budget could
disband it within the next 30 days. Seven counties now participate in the task force.
$1.00 a year of our car insurance goes to support the task forces within the state. In 2008, $747
million worth of vehicle thefts occurred. Since then, the numbers have decreased 10-18% per year.
If auto theft was a legitimate business, it would be worth over $1 billion dollars and be one of the
largest corporations in America.
In our area, a vehicle is stolen every 6 minutes with August as the busiest month and February the
slowest. Two-thirds of vehicle thefts occur between 1-5 am. Bait cars are paid for by the insurance
companies.
438,000 motorcycles have been stolen of the 7,752,926 that are registered. Honda and Yamaha are
the preferred models to be stolen. The Arian Brotherhood, and gangs, are involved and use the
stolen motorcycles to transport ―meth.‖
Common sense is the best route for vehicle owners to follow: #1 lock the doors, take the keys and
park in a well-lit location; #2 use the warning and barrier devices like The Club, the alarms and red
lights; #3 immobilizing devices that kill the engine remotely.
pg. 4
When caught and convicted, an individual could face a 1st degree felony, a fine of $200,000 and 5-99
years in prison. Items intentionally left in the bait cars have tracking devices placed on them so the
officers can watch the live video on-line.
A quorum was established and the business meeting was begun.
Secretary Emerson presented the April General Minutes. Pat Struble moved to accept; Peggy
Jacobs seconded and the motion passed.
Treasurer Goodman presented the April Treasurer’s report noting the donations for Jim Stone have
been transferred to the police fund. Pat Struble moved to accept as presented; Autumn Penry
seconded and the motion passed.
Lt. Long had nothing new to report.
Becky Hixson spoke about the Volunteer Appreciation day sponsored by the City. If anyone did not
receive their certificate, please contact Becky. Regarding background checks, Becky has emailed
those whose background checks need to be updated when their city ID expired, or is soon to expire.
There was some mis-communication between the CCTV, front desk and Sky Watch and no copies
were saved and given to Community Services.
President Jezek has attended the first meeting for the September CAC (Communities against Crime)
5k run. The Board has already approved the $250 sponsor fee. Pat Struble moved to pay the $250;
Kit Behringer seconded and the motion passed. Lisa Hill of Child Protective Services, and
chairperson of the 5k, will be our General Meeting Speaker for June.
Vice President Struble attended the CPANT regional meeting in Garland the Saturday before. The
presentation was on ―K2‖ and bath salts that are now being mistreated by folks and are being
considered dangerous drugs. Pat hopes to secure that speaker for our July General Meeting. The
June CPANT will be in Burleson on June 4th and the July 9th meeting will be in Lewisville. The state
convention is scheduled for Galveston for August 21-24.
As for the CPA current class, the last session is Monday, May 23rd and Pat is planning a pizza party
(the pizza has been donated). If any member can assist with fruit and/or salad, please contact Pat.
The class will graduate on Wednesday, May 25th, at City Hall. Pat is planning on cupcakes, truffles,
strawberries and fruit cups. If you can donate, please contact Pat.
Director Vegos has sent cards to Michelle Helton, Donna Andrews and Jackie Green. Prayers are
requested for Rev. Dillon’s son, Anthony, and Gary Mahon who has heart issues and cancer.
Director Hawkins updated the dates for traffic scenarios on June 9th and 10th from 3-11pm in the
parking lots east of The Ballpark. The DWI scenarios are scheduled for the Thursday and Friday
after and Joe has enough volunteers for both days.
pg. 5
REMINDER: All City ID badges must be current to participate in scenarios.
Director Martin spoke about the Olenjack’s June 5th fundraiser. We will have a table there and
donation jar and a flyer has been emailed to all members with the information. We hope to raise
money to send children to the PAL camp this summer.
Director Anderson advised two classes have been switched so they will be at the Fire Training
Academy on Monday, the 15th.
Secretary Emerson advised the socials will be discussed after police week with the June one
probably at River Legacy Living Science Center followed by a picnic. She will have the alumni
merchandise for sale at the CPA graduation on 5/25.
Joan Junker passed around a sign-up sheet for all 4 stations to deliver lunch to the officers. We have
received 29 door prizes, $1720 in gift cards, $5003 in cash, 410 items and 3 grand prizes including 4
Texas Rangers tickets and 2 Southwest Airline tickets to anywhere Southwest flies.
At 8:35pm, Pat Struble moved to adjourn; Autumn Penry seconded; the motion passed and the
meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted by Kathleen Emerson, Secretary, May 17, 2011.
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count.
It's the life in your years.
