Parents’ Bulletin Thursday 11th January 2007
Welcome back! We hope you all had a peaceful and relaxing holiday. Staff and pupils worked very hard in the final weeks of last term, preparing for all the Christmas events. The Carol Service at Bitterne Parish Church was a delightful occasion, and we were very pleased to see so many parents there. Our Christmas Concert at the Turner Sims Hall was one of our most successful yet, and we received many comments from members of the audience praising the pupils for such a high standard of performance. The Inter-House Quiz on the last day of term was a less nail-biting affair than last year’s, as Spartan went into an early lead which the team held onto until the end, although Trojan became more threatening in the final rounds. As this is Spartan’s first win for eight years, we must congratulate them and their victorious team of Stephanie C, Naomi G, Samuel N, Christopher B and Peter H. Well done!
Appointment of School Medical Officer
We welcome Mrs. Jean Cookson to the new post of School Medical Officer. Mrs. Cookson trained at Alder Hey Childrens’ Hospital and has spent her career working with children, including employment with Hampshire Constabulary and more recently as School Nurse at Testwood Sports College. Mrs. Cookson will provide routine and emergency help to pupils with common injuries or illnesses, including a triage assessment service for injuries. Her role will also involve assisting the teaching staff with Personal, Social and Health Education with lessons concerning diet and nutrition, substance abuse and sexual relationships.
Clubs and Activities
With the start of a new term comes a new clubs and activities timetable. A copy of the Spring Term Timetable is attached to this Bulletin for parents’ information. We encourage all pupils to join at least one club or group – research indicates that participation in extra-curricular activities improves pupils’ self-esteem and enhances performance in the classroom. We are planning to extend our provision of extra-curricular activities, and will keep parents informed of developments.
Pole to Pole…
Congratulations to Richard and Peter H on gaining national rankings (20th and 50th respectively) in Pole Vaulting. These are impressive achievements as they have only competed for one season and are both the youngest in their respective age groups. Their 2007 campaign starts with the South of England Indoor Championships on the 20 th/21st January in London. First into action is Peter in the Under 17 Men's competition, with brother Richard competing in the Under 15 Boys’ Vault. Richard has also achieved the qualifying height for the National Championships at Birmingham in February. Hannah has put her injury woes behind her and our new Vaulters, Simon P and Claire T, are progressing well. All are looking forward to competing in an indoor competition before the outdoor season begins. We wish them all the very best of luck as they begin their 2007 campaign.
