Location: The David Livingstone Centre, 165 Type of Contract: Fixed- term to
Station Rd, Blantyre, G72 9BY end of May 2014, full time (40
hours per week)

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The main function of this post is to work directly with school groups and learners of all
ages and backgrounds to make the most of the opportunity presented by the
bicentenary of David Livingstone to support learning and greater community
engagement and participation at David Livingstone’s birthplace.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Key Purposes of the Job will be met by:
Development and delivery of high quality learning opportunities at the David
Livingstone Centre and in the wider community. This will include working with
formal educational groups in the primary and secondary sectors, community
groups, and family groups and other visitors to the museum. The post holder
will work with learners of all ages and ability-levels.
Updating existing learning programmes and resources, and developing new
ones for the Bicentenary. The programmes could include single events,
outreach, sustainable programs of visits by school pupils and activities developed
in partnership with schools or other organisations. This will involve audience
evaluation, research and audience development.
Accompanying and guiding groups, including schools, through the museum and
wider site to ensure a high quality learning experience.
In partnership with the Property Manager, and other Trust staff, the post-
holder will develop and strengthen active links with schools, community groups
including “difficult to reach” young people, and members of black and ethnic
minority communities. It is anticipated that these links will help to inform and
establish the direction of the long-term future of the Centre.
Supporting the development and delivery of informal learning programmes and
events, often working closely with other Trust staff. This will involve
developing varied learning opportunities for adults, senior learners, and
audiences with complex needs.
The role is one for which the duties/responsibilities/accountabilities require you to
become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme, which
replaces the ‘Enhanced Disclosure’ check and is administered by Disclosure Scotland.
SCOPE OF ROLE
People Management:
The role will require the post holder to work closely with the Property Manager,
Senior Assistant, Education volunteers and other members of staff. The post holder
may be required to assist in taking bookings, key holding and other duties associated
with visitor management and liaison. The post holder will be required to ensure a safe
and enjoyable experience for school groups, pre booked groups and individual visitors.
The post holder will regularly meet with the property manager to review operational
practices and the delivery of the programmes they are responsible for.
While the post holder will normally not have any direct line management
responsibilities they may be required to manage volunteers, placements and contractors.
Financial Management :
The role has no direct financial management responsibility at present however, the post
holder will be expected to use Trust financial systems with reference to expenses and
purchase orders.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
The post holder will need to have a variety of personal and professional strengths. They
must be at ease in working with the public, particularly young people. The role will
require stamina, tact and enthusiasm.
The above outlines the key skills the job holder will need to possess and exercise. In
addition, either knowledge of or experience in the following is required:
Essential
Experience in directly working with visitors in a heritage or public performance
environment;
Ability to manage time efficiently and effectively in an environment of changing
priorities;
A relevant qualification or previous experience in museum, theatre,
interpretation or similar educational sector is desirable;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
Ability to work directly and effectively with young people and teaching staff;
Experience in development and delivery of learning programmes, events and
resources;
Proven track record of developing and delivering Learning programmes and
events for all ages;
Sensitivity to the needs of learners and community participants within an
area of multiple social deprivation;
Knowledge of Child Protection, Health & Safety and other legislation necessary
to ensuring the safety of participants in the Trust Learning Programmes;
Technical knowledge of Scottish education system and current curricular
thinking;
A positive approach to team working.
Desirable
Knowledge of or enthusiasm for David Livingstone/19th century Scottish
history/ Africa;
A graduate qualification in the Arts / History or Drama or equivalent
experience.
