4. Date of admission of course JUNE 2008.
5. Title of the Topic:
“A STUDY TO CORRELATE BETWEEN ANATOMICAL INCLINES
OF ARTICULAR EMINENCE IN PANORAMIC RADIOGRAPHIC
IMAGES AND GUIDANCE ACHIEVED BY INTEROCCLUSAL
     RECORDS”.

6. Brief resume of the intended work:

     6.1 Need for the study:

Several studies have shown the unreliability of recording and reproducing the condylar
     guidance on semiadjustable articulators.

Recording methods for mandibular movements have been advocated and used to form, or
adjust the condylar control mechanism of the articulators, while the reasons for acceptance
or rejection of these procedures are varied.

The need of the study is to determine tracings obtained from the panoramic radiographs
can be used as an aid in determining horizontal condylar guidance in clinical situation.

     6.2 Review of literature:
        
The plane of reference is a relevant parameter to consider because condylar
inclination values cannot be compared when obtained with different planes of
            reference.1

        
Patients eminence angle was relatively stable over time(changes rapidly only due to
diseases or acute trauma),all sagittal condylar angles are relative and it is easy to
            use the FH reference plane.2

        
The values for condylar determinants are within a large range. This variability of
condylar values suggested the importance of determining the individual condylar
determinants rather than relying on average values.3
 The extra oral gothic arch tracing to be as accurate as that of intra oral method for
edentulous patients because ,the protrusion of the recording apparatus is so far
          forward of the pivotal area4.

 Studies have shown the unreliability of recording and reproducing the condylar
          guidance on various instruments.5

 A significant correlation between the articular eminence inclinations in dry skulls
and those obtained from radiographic images was found.6

 Images of the articular eminences in a panoramic radiograph may be used to
provide the anatomic incline of the articular eminence and may be value as an aid
in setting the condylar guidance in semiadjustable articulators.6

        6.3 Objectives of the study:

 The purpose of this study to determine correlation between anatomical inclines of
the articular eminence in panoramic radiographic images and guidance achieved
            from protrusive interocclusal records.

7. Materials and methods:

     7.1 Source of data :
The subjects in this study will be the patients visiting the Outpatient Department of
Prosthodontics in the A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences.
For the purpose of the study the sample will be 20 completely edentulous patients taken
     randomly.

     7.2 Methodology:
Twenty completely edentulous patients will be selected for the study. Subjects are
informed about instruments and procedures to be performed and consent will be taken.
Impressions will made using conventional techniques and master casts will be prepared
     using dental stone.
Maxillary and mandibular denture bases will be fabricated on the master casts. Occlusion
rims will be then prepared and will be adjusted in the patient's mouth to register the
maxillo-mandibular relations. Using face bow transfer, the maxillary cast will be mounted
on the semiadjustable articulator.
Tentative centric relation will be then registered at the conventionally established vertical
dimension. Mandibular cast will be mounted in the articulator using this tentative
registration. Protrusive interocclusal record will be obtained from the patient by gothic
arch tracing. Horizontal condylar guidance will be obtained on the semiadjustable
articulator.
A panoramic radiograph will be taken and traced for most superior point on the articular
eminence and inferior point on the articular tubercle just adjacent to zygomatic arch. These
two points are connected by a straight line representing mean curvature line. Angles made
by the intersection of the mean curvature line and the horizontal reference (FHP) line are
measured.

Statistical method for analysis:
The data obtained will be statistically analyzed using Pearson correlation statistical
analysis.

Inclusion criteria :
    1. Completely edentulous patients will be selected for the study.

    2. Patients with good neuromuscular function will be selected for the study.

Exclusion criteria :
 1. Patients with restricted and deviated mouth opening.

 2. Patients with history of disorders of temporomandibular joint and muscles of
    mastication will be excluded.

7.3 Does the study require any investigations or interventions to be
conducted on patients or other humans or animals?
Yes, this study requires the consent of the patients for the study.
7.4 Has the ethical clearance been obtained from your institution in case
      of 7.3?
Ethical clearance letter has been enclosed.
