THE THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B 17 /18 NOVEMBER 2012
Not all continents have four seasons as we do here! My mother often told me how they had two growing seasons in
Tanzania when she was there during the second world war. But we are blessed with four, spring, summer, autumn and
winter and I think that it is important for us, as part of creation, to be in tune with the seasons. For instance, now that it is
autumn we expect it to become colder, the trees to be shedding their leaves and a process of dying to take place. Then,
winter will be a time of waiting, celebrating Christmas! Spring with its freshness in new life and summer opening up its buds
to full flower and fruit! Wow, isn’t nature great! But we have to be in tune with nature to benefit from her wisdom! The
wisdom of nature!
When I came back to Reading I spent a lot of time in the garden. In the autumn I cleared the brambles and the weeds even
an elderberry which must have been seeded by a bird had grown into a large tree. The garden was covered high with
weeds. But I knew what it looked like before and where the path was. So I cleared the way along the path, making large
heaps on either side. When they had dried out I had large bonfires and slowly things were beginning to take shape! Winter
saw a covering of frost and snow over the garden which had been cleared and dug!
In the spring the sunshine revealed a garden ready for preparing for the growing season. Insects awakened from their
winter slumber were now winging their existence around the garden. Vegetables were what I would concentrate on!
Beetroot, cabbage, broccoli, spinach! And when they grew there was no stopping them: spinach grew profusely. Mum
would get annoyed that I would eat a plateful of spinach. Go to the supermarket and get something decent she would say,
but I would just smile!
Getting in tune with nature I think also enabled nature to work on me! Physically I began to shed my own leaves! On the
kitchen wall I would make a note of my weight so that over the course of a year the whole wall was covered. It became
exciting to see my weight dropping, at one time plateauing and then again dropping. I had dropped from nearly 20 stone to
13 stone in one whole year of seasons! The wonder and wisdom of the seasons!
