              WELCOME TO SUSSEX TRAINING CONSORTIUM


Welcome to our training and development brochure for 2012/2013. The courses
within this brochure will help your staff to develop vital skills and knowledge. The
subjects offered cover key core skills and make the difference between both good
and excellent work performance and service.

All of this quality training is offered to Local Authorities within the Sussex Training
Consortium at a reasonable price. If resources allow, this training is offered to non-
members at a higher cost.



OUR MISSION STATEMENT

The Consortium is a strategic partnership of local authorities working towards
financial independence and providing effective training which meets common
development needs thereby achieving economies of scale.



OUR AIM

Our training and development workshops aim to give you inspiration, practical tips
and techniques, motivation and support and an opportunity to learn with other
officers and colleagues from across the local government sector of Sussex.

         TRAINING


Introduction

The aim of this one day fully participative workshop is to help you improve your
personal effectiveness and communication with others in all areas of your life and
work.

Target Audience: All Staff

Objectives

By the end of this workshop you will:

    Know the definition of assertiveness and when to use it

    Have identified your current assertive skill and will know what your
     objectives are

    Understand the difference between aggressive, passive, manipulative and
     assertive behaviour

    Understand the meaning of ‘hidden’ messages

    Be able to communicate your point of view in a clear, honest and direct way

    Know how to give and receive positive and negative feedback

    Know how to change your mindset and body language to improve your
     confidence

Introduction

This programme has been designed to provide participants with a broader
understanding of finance within a local authority environment.

Target Audience: All Managers

Objectives

By the end of the workshop you will:

    Have an understanding of profit, surplus and deficit versus cash flow

    Plan for successful performance

    Use finance to justify change

    Understand the financial effect of decisions

  PROJECT MANAGEMENT
     INTRODUCTORY

Introduction

This workshop has been designed to provide participants with a broad
understanding of Project Management and its associated tools and techniques. It will
be particularly useful for people for whom Project Management forms a significant
part of their responsibilities and who are seeking a general understanding/
introduction. Fast-paced, participative and fun, this event packs a lot of information
into a short space of time.

Target Audience: All colleagues who have an involvement within project
management. No prior knowledge is assumed.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

    Explain the principles of Project Management methodologies including
     Prince2

    Make decisions regarding the use of Project Management disciplines in
     different situations

    Demonstrate an understanding of the most common Project Management
     tools and techniques

  PROJECT MANAGEMENT
       ADVANCED

Introduction

This workshop builds on the key concepts and basic techniques covered on the
project management awareness workshop. Participants will use some of the tools &
methods discussed & they may bring personal project material with them if they
wish.

Target Audience: Please note that attendance on the introductory course is a pre-
requisite for attending this event.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

    Implement project communication in more detail

    Monitor detail in greater depth

    Understand how to solve common problems using tools & techniques
     acquired on the day

    Close a project successfully and deal with any post-project issues

    TIME MANAGEMENT

Introduction: The aim of this one day workshop is to make the best use of time
available within the workplace. It is also important for individuals to gain a good
work/life balance and to minimise stress wherever possible.

Target Audience: All Staff

Objectives: By the end of this workshop participants will have:

    A better understanding of the history of time management and it’s principles

    Understand where time is lost

    Received hints & tips for improving personal efficiency

    Compiled a time log and analysed use of your time

    Understand the importance of prioritising work

    Completed action planning

  EFFECTIVE COMPLAINT HANDLING


 Introduction: A one day skills course in investigating complaints, delivered by
experienced Local Government Ombudsman investigators.
 Target Audience: Managers, Team Leaders, departmental and corporate complaints
 officers whose jobs involve dealing with complaints in the higher stages of the
 complaints procedures, after the informal stage and up to the point of deciding the
 complaint.
 Objectives: The aim of the course is to help participants to develop their skills in:
      Defining and analysing complaints

      Planning investigations and making the best use of sources of information

      Evaluating information and making sound decisions

      Communicating those decisions effectively

      Resolving and learning from complaints

      Overcoming common problems.

 How it is done: The course is interactive using a variety of activities and materials
 including:
      Participants’ experience of making complaints and our experience of what
       can go wrong

      Research findings on what contributes to customer satisfaction and trust in
       service providers

      A troubleshooting exercise to consider the problems staff encounter and
       possible solutions.

 Participants work on a case study. Using their expertise and drawing on the
 experience of the investigator, they define, investigate and reach a conclusion on a
 complaint.

 COMPETITIVE DIALOGUE



Introduction: A one day workshop for managers who want an effective introduction
to this new area of the contracting process. By the end of the training participants
will have a good understand of competitive dialog, and know the legal requirements
and key stages in such a process.

Target Audience: The workshop is intended for any level of manager looking to be
introduced to this new and developing area of contracting. The workshop is not
intended for those who are new to the contracting process.

Objectives: The workshop will look at the various stages of the process and will
consider the complexities involved in undertaking a Competitive Dialogue and the
issues faced by authorities in terms of resources, cost and time, including:

      early market engagement
      invitation to participate in dialogue
      the dialogue phase
      calls for final tenders
      best and final offers
      preferred bidder stage

      Evaluation of PQQ and Selection of Long-list Outcome Solutions Exercise
      Invitation to Participate in the Dialogue (ITPD)
